Precautions

1.1 It is advisable to use the single-phase 3-pin socket for the power source connection on the present
instrument. The grounding end must be according to the stipulated requirement for earth protecting.
1.2 It is necessary to read carefully the usage instruction manual before the operation of the present
instrument in order to know the operational procedures and the precautions so as to avoid the damages
to the instrument and the personal unsafe accident caused by the incorrect operation.
1.3 During the installment and the preoperational test, the sticking paper that protects the indenter against
the shock during the transportation should be taken off carefully because the over-strength in doing it would
affect the positional precision of the indenter.
1.4 It is prohibited to dismount and alternate without permission all the electric component parts, the switches
and sockets as well as their fixed positions, otherwise, it will cause accident.
1.5 If find abnormal phenomena during loading, press STOP key at once. The instrument will stop loading
automatically and return to its initial position.
1.6 The standard accessory of Vickers indenter is equipped on present instrument. If require to replace with
a Knoop indenter, it must be very carefully, otherwise it will damage the pressure sensor caused by improper
operation of replacement. Detail, see introduction in Section 9 of present instruction manual.
1.7 Our company tries to improve the quality of the hardness testers and renew their structure continuously.
In case the contents in the USAGE INSTRUCTION MANUAL are a bit different with the actual structure
of the instrument, it is hoped and apologized for the fact that the further notice will not be given.

A Brief Introduction of Hardness Tester

3.1 The Digital Vickers Hardness Tester is a new type high-tech product combining the optical, mechanic
and electronic techniques; with a large LCD screen display, a novel and pleasing appearance, directviewing, operational functions and reliability, hence it is an ideal instrument for the testing of Vickers
hardness. It has an auto-shifting device between indenter and objectives.
3.2 The hardness tester is adopted such techniques as a precise design in the field of mechanics, a higher
amplification objectives and digital micro eyepiece in optics field and cold light source for measuring light
source, etc.
3.3 Due to adopt the closed-circuits in loading control system, it makes the accuracy of test force higher,
the repeatability and stability of displaying values better. It is the initiate of home to adopt this system
on Vickers hardness tester.
3.4 By means of touch keys on the operating board, the dwell time for test force can be preset, the luminosity
of light source can be regulated, Vickers or Knoop measuring method can be selected, hardness scales
can be exchanged and files can be stored, etc. All the testing data such as the indentation length, the
hardness value, the number of the measurements, and year, month, day, and time are all shown on the
LCD screen. It can test result and handle data, and output by printer as well. By means of RS232 interface,
the instrument would be connected with computer.
3.5 According to the particular requirements of the client, the instrument can be equipped with CCD device
to enable the video measuring and auto image measuring. The instrument is suitable for testing the micro
and thin pieces, the parts with the permeated and coated surface, it is also fit for testing Vickers hardness
value for the crisp materials such as the agate, glass and it is, therefore, an ideal hardness measuring
instrument for the scientific research institutes, the universities, the industrial production units and the
metrological institutes using with for studying and measuring.

At this point, in the center of the vision field of the Eyepiece appears a bright spot, which shows it is very
close to the focusing plane. At this time, raise the Test Table up slowly until the hardness block or specimen
surface forms a clear image in the micro Eyepiece.
8.7 After the focusing operation is finished, the distance between the tip of Indenter and the plane of specimen
is very small. When the irregular-shaped specimen is to be tested, take care not to damage the Indenter
wning to the touching of the indenter with the specimen.
8.8 The luminosity of the light source in the vision field can be regulated through pressing keys L+ or L- key
on the operating board.
8.9 Press the START key on the operating board, the hardness tester will enter into working state and the
Indenter will be shift automatically to working position.
8.9.1 Apply the test force automatically: the screen will display an arrow towards down, the screen is
tracking and displaying the value of test force F.
8.9.2 After the test force applying is completed, dwelling begins, and at this time, the dwell time (Dwell)
shows back-count of the time till to zero.
8.9.3 After dwell time is up, the arrow displaying on the screen is towards up and the instrument
automatically unloads the test force.
1.Before the arrow disappears, please don' t touch any pressing key and component parts of
hardness tester, otherwise it will damage the hardness tester.
2.When power on the instrument and unloading arrow without disappear, the keys on operating

Regulation and Precautions of the Hardness Tester

9.1The Diamond Indenter
9.1.1The diamond indenter and axis of indenter are very important parts of the instrument, and hence it
is necessary to take care not to collide the Indenter during the operation
9.1.2In order to assure the precision of the measurement, it is important to keep the Indenter clean. If it
is covered with grease or dust, it should be cleaned carefully with absorbent cotton dipped with alcohol
r industrial ether, especially the tip of the Indenter.
9.1.3The round column of the Indenter is marked with a red dot. If the
Indenter is once unloaded, take care to make the red dot face the
frontal direction when it is reloaded, and the focus of the diagonal
lines of the indentation should be aligned with the red dot. It is possible
to make the alignment of the cross-shaped line in the eyepiece with
the diagonal line of the indentation. If the indentation observed is not
aligned with the cross-shaped line, please unscrew the screw on the

Fig12

indenter, turn the indenter a bit and the fasten the screw, and then
make the alignment again through tests until the alignment is all
right to your satisfaction (See Fig.12)
9.1.4It must take very care to regulate the position of indenter or

Pressure
Sensor

exchange the indenter. Because the indenter is equipped on the

pressure sensor, it will damage the pressure sensor easy by improper

Screw

operation of unloading or reloading the indenter. The precision of

the sensor will not be repaired. The method of unloading and

Indenter

reloading indenter is as follows (Fig.13):

Fig13

A)Hold the part of sensor which equips the indenter with your hand. Loose the screw, unload or rotate
the indenter.
B)After fixed the indenter, it must hold the sensor with hand; then tighten the screw.
9.2 Micro Eyepiece
9.2.1Owing to the difference of the personal visions, the graduated lines observed in the vision field of
the eyepiece may seem vague. And accordingly, the observer should turn slightly the eye guard in front
of the Eyepiece according to his personal visional line so as to make the graduated line observed in the
vision field clear.
9.2.2Insert the Micro Eyepiece into eyepiece tube. When measure two diagonal lines length, it needs
to turn the Micro Eyepiece clockwise 900. During the turning operation, the Micro Eyepiece should move
tightly along the inner side of the eyepiece tube without any space between them; otherwise it would
affect the correctness of the measurement.

14

Instruction Manual of Advanced Digital Vickers Hardness tester

9.3 Cold Light Source for Lighting

9.3.1Due to Adopt cold light source for lighting in present instrument, the center position of light source
will directly affect the image quality of indentation. When assemble the instrument in the factory, the
center position of the light source has already been regulated, hence the user should not regulate it.
9.4 Specimen
9.4.1The surface of the specimen must be clean, as the grease or the dirt on the surface would make the
edge of the image of the indentation vague, thus affecting the precision of the measurement. Please clean
the specimen with alcohol or ether.
9.4.2When thin filaments, thin pieces and small parts are used as the specimens, the fine wire testing table,
thin specimen testing table and the fork-shaped testing table should be used to hold the specimens
respectively on the Testing Table for the measurement. If the specimen is too small to be held by the testing
table, the specimen should be inlayed and polished for the measurement.
9.4.3The Min. thickness of the specimen should be 10 times superior to the depth of the indentation. After

Vickers Hardness Value (HV)

the test, the back of the specimen should not have any visible signs of deformation (Fig.14).

Min Thickness of Specimen (mm)
