Katrina Lessons

We lived last week under the shadow of a possible hurricane

or tropical storm. Fortunately, neither materialized, but we
couldnt help but remember that it was ten years ago that
week that Hurricane Katrina decimated New Orleans and
the Mississippi coast. One of our nations most destructive
storms offers lessons which we dare not forget.
As we remember scenes of 25,000 refugees moved from
the Superdome to the Astrodome, they left a city under 20
feet of water, citizens who had hacked their way on to roofs,
and others who died in their attics. As helicopters hovered,
there were optimistic rescuers but also opportunistic looters. New Orleans
Lower Ninth Ward was the hardest hit and the slowest to recover. It lacked a
grocery store until last year, and it still does not turn a profit. We also remember
with horror how the storm surge cut deep into the Mississippi coastal area. It
could have happened here, so we thank God for His mercy.
Lets remember the lesson of how temporary our possessions are. New Orleans
evacuees did not verbally bemoan a submerged Chevy or breathlessly say to
a news crew, I cant believe that my golf clubs washed away! They grieved
primarily for lost people. Jesus reminds us that life Does not consist in the
abundance of our possessions (Luke 12:15). Remembering the scene of a
riverboat casino washed up three blocks and dumped on top of a house, we
hear Him say, What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits
his soul? (Matthew 16:26). A broken levee reminds us that our foundation must
be in God. Crisis has a unique way of prying our fingers off of our beloved
belongings and turning our attention to what cannot wash or blow away.

Churchwide
New 11:00am Worship Service in the Chapel
Begins Sunday, Sept 27 at 11:00am

Our Pastors and staff feel that God is calling us to create a

new service that will further help us reach people who prefer
worship on Sunday mornings in a casual environment with
a modern sound. Please pray with us as we prepare for this
new service. Ask God to reveal who you can invite to join
you in worship, whichever service you attend.

A Call to Prayer

Sunday, September 13 at 5:00pm in the Chapel

We are also reminded that humans are capable of extraordinary sin or service.
While some rescued their neighbors and many civil servants risked their lives
for strangers, we also think of the looting, the fighting, and the danger of just
sleeping in the Superdome. We were reminded once again that our primary
problem is not Mother Nature, but human nature.

Join us for a special time as we gather as a church family

to pray. Led by our Pastor and staff, we will seek the Lord
together and ask Him to move mightily in and through us to
bring revival as we commit the rest of this year to Him.

Life is unpredictable and short; we must be prepared to meet our God. We

are called to be spiritual weather-readers. Jesus rebuked those in His day, You
know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the
signs of the times (Matthew 16:3). We are definitely living in a time when it is
stormy, for the sky is threatening (Matthew 16:3). We have the privilege of
steering sinners to call on the only One Who is the true Refuge and Redeemer
(Psalm 86:7).

Last Weekend to Pick-up Drama Packets

in the Commons by the Staricase

In Biloxi, Mississippi, pregnant Stephenie Post felt her water break just as the
power went out. She had earlier sought refuge in a hospital. Ultimately, seven
flashlights and three headlamps had to provide light for the doctors to deliver
her daughter, who is now 10. Stephenie recalled: They had so many flashlights,
it lit up the room so I felt safe. Each of us as witnesses can shine our light in
the good and bad times and point to the true Light of the world, the Lord Jesus
Christ. Our challenge is to warn those who, like some in Katrina, refused to
leave a doomed locale. If you are one of those reading this article, please do
not pay that permanent price. Let Jesus rescue you today.
