2. GLOBAL TRADE - KEY FINDINGS

Despite a miserable 2014 in cow pea exports, the U.S. hung on to be one of the
leaders in the global cow pea trade. In 2014, the U.S. exported 3 thousand
tonnes of cow peas totaling 1,984 thousand USD, 63% under the previous
year. Its primary trading partner was Mexico, where it supplied 69% of its total
cow pea exports in value terms.
From 2012 to 2014, the U.S. was a net exporter of cow peas. Over this period,
exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms. However, in physical
terms, the difference was less pronounced, except for 2014 when high import
prices made it more notable.
Peru and China were among the other main global suppliers of cow peas in
2014. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2012 to 2014 were Turkey
(+112% per year) and South Africa (+62% per year).
The U.S.'s top 5 trading partners in 2014 were Mexico, Curacao, the
Netherlands, the Republic of Korea and Canada, with a combined 83% share of
the U.S. cow pea exports. The share of the Netherlands increased modestly
(+3 percentage points), while the share of Mexico dropped dramatically (-29
percentage points).
