2. GLOBAL TRADE - KEY FINDINGS

Despite a huge drop in exports in 2014, Belgium was still able to hold the
second spot in the global leek and other alliaceous vegetable trade. In 2014,
Belgium exported 70 thousand tonnes of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables
totaling 46 million USD, 47% under the previous year. Its primary trading
partner was France, where it supplied 33.6% of its total leek and other
alliaceous vegetable exports in value terms, accounting for 53.8% of Frances
total imports.
From 2007 to 2014, Belgium was a net exporter of leeks and other alliaceous
vegetables. Over this period, exports consistently exceeded imports in value
terms. In physical terms this difference was even more pronounced.
The Netherlands and China were among the other main global suppliers of
leeks and other alliaceous vegetables in 2014. However, the fastest growing
exporters from 2007 to 2014 were Mexico (+9.6% per year) and Portugal
(+9.2% per year). Still, it was The Netherlands that significantly strengthened
its position in the global export structure.
Belgiums top 5 trading partners in 2014 were France, Germany, Spain, the
United Kingdom and the Netherlands, with a combined 77.5% share of
Belgiums leek and other alliaceous vegetable exports. The share of Spain
increased modestly (+3.8 percentage points), while the share of Germany
dipped slightly (-3.8 percentage points).
