The Eye and Vision
The human eye is the starting point
of all lighting design. It is
instinctively drawn towards the
brightest object in the field of
vision, and it is also attracted to
contrast, change or movement.
The skilful Lighting Designer can
use some of the features of the eye
to increase the power of his or her
design. It then becomes possible to
create a visual hierarchy of objects.
A typical museum or exhibition will
have a range of objects and

The role of light
surfaces to be lit. These could be:
the artefacts, the gallery space
itself (if the exhibition is in a
prestigious place), supporting
graphic material (from a tiny label
that carries an artefact's number
to a major piece of graphic artwork)
or the floor surface, so that visitors
can see their way around safely and
comfortably. The visual hierarchy
should support the story being told
by the exhibition. If the lighting
designer starts with no light at all,

by layer to whatever relative and
absolute levels he or she needs to
support the story being told by the
exhibition. Moreover, changes of
emphasis can be created by adding
dynamic and coloured light. Great
care must be taken when using
coloured light, though a change of

temperature.

Colour Rendering
For obvious reasons, the quality of
the light used in museum lighting
takes on a pre-eminent importance.
One important factor is the
Colour Rendering Index (CRI),
which expresses the light's ability
to saturate the colours of the
illuminated objects and therefore
render their perception.
For example, paintings in an art
gallery require the highest colour
rendering index. In this case,
the CRI must be higher than 90.
It is however necessary to keep
in mind that the colour rendering
index is a conventional value which

to analyse carefully the spectral
distribution of the light.
A simple way to check whether
a light source is suitable is to try
it out on a sample of the artwork.
Light sources with CRI greater than

lamps, 5-band fluorescent lamps.
These are typically used where
accurate colour rendering is critical,
for example in: paintings, frescoes,
tapestries, and carpets.

Light sources with CRI between
80 and 89 are 3-band fluorescent
lamps and metal halide lamps.
A light source with a CRI less than
80 is the white light sodium lamp.
This can be used when colour
rendering is not important,
for example when lighting
monochromatic objects, mosaics,
stone, marble, inlaid work, glasses
or statues.

The lighting of a three-dimensional
object with a predominantly
unidirectional light can help
the appreciation of its shape.

with great care as it will have

Walls and texture
With lighting it is possible to
emphasise different aspects of
texturised or three-dimensional
objects with a complex shape,
such as artefacts or building façades.
Let's imagine a situation in which
we want to illuminate a stone wall
in a museum or exhibition to show
its importance and value. If we
install a luminaire 30 cm from the
base of the wall and aim the light
beam towards the wall, light will
skim the surface, lighting every part
of the stone, while every recess
will be in deep shadow.

The wall appears almost black and
white. Colours can be hardly seen
because of the dominant surface
texture and the wall looks
aggressive and frightening.
If the luminaire is moved 90 cm
away from the wall, a great change
occurs in the appearance of the
wall: the texture is less dominant
and some colour is now visible.
Moving the luminaire further away
from the wall, to 3 and 8 metres,
the surface is softened and flattened,
the texture is harder to see and colours
become more and more visible.

Many objects fade when exposed
to light. Objects that are
of organic origin, such as leather,
fabrics, wood, fur and feathers
fade badly. Many pigments used
in paints are also faded by light.
The rate of fading depends on
many factors, but generally the
higher the light level and the longer
the exposure, the worse the fading.
Most light sources generate
more than visible light, they make
infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV)
radiation as well. Ultraviolet light
causes fading of pigments and
detachment of painting layers.
Infrared produces heating that
can cause microcracks.
A variety of methods can be used
to control the infrared radiation.
Lamps with dichroic reflectors can
be used since they reflect the light
and dissipate most of the heat
towards the back of the fixtures.
Alternatively, IR filters can be used
to remove the infrared component
of the light, or LEDs, which make
no IR. Ultraviolet radiation can be
controlled by UV filters, or by using
lamps with a low or zero UV output.

Avoiding reflections
One of the worst experiences
in a gallery is when the view of a
picture that is shiny or mounted
behind glass is spoiled by a bright
and glary image of a spotlight
reflected in the glass.
We must remember that in case
of a reflecting surface the light
is reflected with the same angle
it reaches the surface with.
To avoid reflections on artworks,
one can carry out a test based
on the law of specular reflection.

Adaptation of the eye

Many artefacts are beautiful
to look at.
But to look at them one needs light
and this light may damage them.
A simple practical solution might
be to reduce the light level.
This does not stop the damage,
but if the light level is low enough

The Appearance
of Luminaires
The Lighting Designer should
consider the appearance of all
lighting equipment very carefully.
The lighting equipment is a design
statement in itself and the way
it is seen is part of the story being
told by the exhibition or the space.
It may be appropriate for it to
hidden away, so that it does not
intrude on the view of the artefacts
or spaces. In this case, the Lighting
Designer should find places to
conceal the luminaires and use
colours and styles of luminaire
that are as discrete as possible.

At the beginning of the 90's
the "Hermitage Friends" Dutch
foundation promoted a project
named "Light and air for the Dutch
masters in the Hermitage", which
triggered the renovation works of
the Hermitage State Museum.
Founded in 1764 to fulfil the wish of
Empress Catherine, the Museum is
a complex of 10 buildings and hosts
over 3 million artworks, including
paintings, graphic art works,
sculptures, applied art, archaeological
monuments, numismatic collections.
The lighting project designed for
the Hermitage aimed at evoking the
ancient splendour, highlighting the
exhibited works and at the same
time valorising the historical interior
settings, a key element of the
Museum's fascination. Suspended
Light air with ultra-flat light design
are perfectly integrated in the
space with minimum visual impact
to generate general light with direct
and indirect emission towards
the ceilings, underscoring
architectural details.
Historical Museums
Gabbiano spotlights are used for
accent lighting on artworks, some
of them being installed at 12
metres from the paintings to be
lit, thus aiming the light on the
artefacts with perfect control of the
luminous flow. Visitors can admire
not only the art works, but also
the magnificent architecture
of the buildings.

A wing of the Louvre Museum with
over 100 primitive sculptures of
the African, Oceanic and American
cultures. “Les Arts Premiers” is a
great art collection in which past
and modernity blend together.
Each work is a witness of a by-gone
age that projects visitors in a
high-tech contemporary place.
The reformation project entrusted
to Jean Michel Wilmotte wanted
to respect the ancient history
of the place, while giving a touch of
personality to space and artworks.
The sculptures had to express
their archaism, blending with
the modernity of the surrounding
environment.
The design is based on the contrast
between the light colours of
the spaces, with white walls of
Portuguese stone, and the dark
colours of the sculptures.
The lighting project plays a major
role creating an atmosphere rich
of history, yet capable of exalting
works and technologies of the
present time at best.
Historical Museums
A special system of mobile lights
includes a series of wall-mounted
guides where the Challenger track
is inserted. The “Le Charriot”
luminaire, made up of a metal
structure onto with two or three
optical assemblies for accent light,
runs along the track.
Daylight is controlled and blended
with artificial light through a thin
screen made of metal grid installed
on the windows to absorb natural
light and create diffused soft lighting.

Housed within the British Museum,
on the western side of the Great
Court, the King's Library is an
important space with high historical
and architectural value. Designed in
1820 by Romber Smirke as a library
to house King Charles III's book
collection, it lost its function when
the collection was transferred to
the British Library in the early '90s.
After a thorough discussion on its
future use between 2000 and
2003, renovation works were
started according to the project of
Sir Norman Foster to restore its
original magnificence and use it as
an exhibition gallery. The lighting
project studied in collaboration with
the English Heritage focuses on the
conservation of the architectural
space and on the control of natural
light. In order to guarantee general,
safety and emergency lighting,
the luminaires are integrated with
minimum visual intrusiveness in the
setting, while ensuring maximum
energy saving and easy
maintenance. A careful balance of
direct and indirect lighting, through
the combination of uplights to
illuminate the ceiling and Radius
fixtures to light the window frames,
neutralises the chromatic contrast
between the King's Library interiors
lighting and the light coming
through the Great Court glazed

windows, while highlighting the
ornate ceiling plasterwork, the
rhythm and symmetry of the
gallery. The window casements at
balcony level were the only point
where luminaires could be
conceived and made invisible.
Finally, the book cases were
illuminated with special optical fibre
to protect paper from heat and UV
radiation. Accent lighting of statues
and artefacts was obtained with
luminaires installed in the coffered
soffits of the window casements.
The King's Library lighting project
won the Lighting Design Award
2004 for the public spaces
category.

In 1998 iGuzzini was given the
opportunity to illuminate one
of the most prestigious Italian
monuments ranked by experts
among the ten best museums at
international level: Villa Borghese in
Rome. Acting as technical sponsor,
iGuzzini provided the luminaires and
carried out a research work in the
field of the most advanced lighting
systems in collaboration with
the main representatives of the
Superintendence for Cultural
Heritage and the Central Institute
for Restoration.
This building is not only the first
artwork of Galleria Borghese, but
also a container for more works of
art. Therefore the luminaires would
have certainly hidden a part of the
gallery. The XO system fixtures for
general lighting were placed on
the cornices all around the room.
Accent lighting is produced
by Cestello luminaires.
Both lighting fixtures are completely
hidden to the visitors' eyes.
The museum lighting is based
on a computerised and centralised
control system.
Historical Museums
Lux sensors were installed in
the exhibition rooms; one sensor
was mounted outside to measure
daylight; another sensor was placed
inside to measure overall lighting.
By relating the values measured
by the two sensors with the best
perception of the artworks,
the light quality is kept constant,
with the possibility to reproduce
this ratio over time.

The ancient resident of Tuscany
grand dukes, today Palazzo Pitti
hosts numerous art galleries with
important collections of paintings
and sculptures, artworks and
valuable chinaware. During the
“Magnificence at the Medici Court”
exhibition, Amilcare Pizzi presented
a scene design that attracted the
general public and experts' attention
as it escaped the traditional criteria
of museum exhibitions.
The artworks - seven sculptures
with name "Competing between
ancient and modern in sculpture" -
were displayed in seven rooms
according to the different themes,
with visit routes and information.
Light plays an essential role in
creating theatrical light effects that
accompany visitors discreetly along
the entire route designed by the set
designer. A specific lighting project
was studied for each artwork and
customised according to details to
valorise and emotions to convey.
Lingotto floodlights with indirect
emission underscore the suggestive

decorations on walls and ceilings,
while Cestello luminaires elegantly
illuminate the artworks, answering
with flexibility and efficacy to
different layout requirements.
The lighting fixtures are perfectly
integrated in the aesthetics of the
place, showing the true meaning of
the sculpture and the magnificence
of the building at the same time.

In recent years Palazzo Madama
underwent complex restoration
works, which started in 1997 and
finished in December 2006, with
the reopening of the Municipal
Museum of Ancient Art.
Originally the entrance door to the
city of Turin, the palace became
a fortified castle and was finally
converted in a residential building
by architect Filippo Juvarra.
The recuperation project was a
difficult challenge, and required
many years of study and research,
including in the technical lighting
field. The need to have multiple
installation terminals without
increasing the number of wireways
LED to a technical solution that
allowed for the installation of
terminals and lighting fixtures in
a reduced space. So, in order to
satisfy the needs of this historical
exhibition area, the final solutions
guarantee the correct quantity and
distribution of the light, although in
a limited space. During the day
the large glazed surfaces of the
monumental staircase allow
daylight to come in, while at night
the activities that are carried out
in the building become visible.
The three chandeliers in the
staircases were replaced with
luminaires designed by iGuzzini
based on Cestello.
Historical Museums
The products combine upwards,
downward and sideward light
sources with extreme flexibility,
highlighting the architectural
and decorative elements.
The luminance contrast between
the internal surfaces of the
staircase and the external surfaces
of the façade permits to perceive
the forepart depth.
The formal characteristics of the
system acted as reference for the
solutions implemented in the rest
of the building to maintain a
uniform design, such as in the
"Sala Acaja" and "Sala Stemmi"
halls on the first floor.

The Museo Egizio in Turin is the only
museum in the world, other than
Cairo, dedicated exclusively to
Egyptian art and culture.
The extraordinary collection of large
statues personifying sovereigns,
divinities and princes, is among the
main attractions. In February 2006
these pieces were presented in a
very innovative interpretation by
Dante Ferretti, architect and world-
renowned film set designer, who
focused his treatment of the subject
on a sense of mysticism. For the new
gallery setup, accordingly, he decided
to encase the exhibits in a medium
that would give the public the same
perception of the sacred. With this in
mind, the light that envelops the
statues is carefully metered, and
reflections have been created that
cancel out the empty space
surrounding them, enhancing the
plasticity of the shapes. Ferretti's
concept has been transformed into
reality thanks not least to the
extensive experience of Mekané in
this field of work. In the new layout,
a dark red coloured skin covers the
walls and the roof. Within this lining,
accent lighting provided by
Le Perroquet spots with framer
enhance the exhibits by bringing
them up out of the murky depths.
The first step was to conduct a
study of the existing situation
(a record of every statue). From the
measurements taken, a model was
obtained on which Dante Ferretti was
able to test his ideas for the set-up.
Historical Museums
Given also that this was a temporary
exhibition, all the solutions adopted
had to be reversible.
The exhibition is completed by
images projected onto the walls,
new captions and an atmospheric
sound accompaniment. All lighting
effects were obtained with
Le Perroquet fixtures, which with
various optical assemblies and
suitable accessories provide both
background and accent light.
The interplay of light and shadow
augmented by mirrors, the particular
illumination of the statues, the slow-
moving images and, not least, the
soundtrack, all accompany the visitor
on a truly fascinating visual journey.

The Morgan Library, the historical
museum and library of New York
City, is the venue of one of the
largest collections of manuscripts,
scores, prints and drawings from the
Middle Age and the Renaissance.
The constant increase in the number
of works over the years and in the
cultural activities proposed by the
library determined the need for an
enlargement of the structure.
In 2000 the public authorities
entrusted the enlargement and
renovation project to Renzo Piano,
who gave life to a modern
geometrical architecture that is fully
integrated with the history of the
building and the existing structures,
alternating the old and the new.
Three new functional pavilions are
connected to the historical buildings
through a central square that creates
a communication space between
the six areas of the library. A steel
and glass structure with a special
louver system screens daylight
while playing with transparencies,
shadows and reflections.
The lighting project developed
by RPBW and Arup paid special
attention to the integration of
daylight and artificial lighting to
fascinate visitors along an intimate
welcoming journey.

Only artificial lighting was used in
the underground areas where fragile
paper exhibits are exposed, with
suitable filters and low-intensity
light sources to illuminate and
protect the artworks.
Le Perroquet fittings are installed on
tracks applied to an indirect lighting
system that was designed specially
for this project.
The same spotlights are used in
the auditorium with an innovative
coupling system that that makes
the use of couples of luminaires
possible.

The renovation and enlargement of
the Asturian Centre in La Havana,
Cuba, as well as the project for the
National Museum of Fine Arts, fall
within the general recovery action
implemented by the Cuban
Government in 1997 to create a
new national point of reference
for art and culture. The house of a
universal art collection which
includes works by artists such as
Velasquez, Murillo, Canaletto and
Rubens, and of an ancient collection
of Egyptian show-pieces, fabrics,
Greek ceramics and glasses, the
Asturian Centre underwent a deep
transformation to overcome some
criticalities of the existing complex,
among which the lighting
installation. In collaboration with
Imelth Engineering and iGuzzini
Illuminazione, Cuban designers
developed a very innovative
museum lighting system which
not only is inserted with minimum
visual impact in the architectural
value of the historical building, but
takes full advantage of daylight in
integration with artificial lighting.
The lighting on the ceiling amplifies
the numerous exhibition areas,
giving lightness to ceilings and
depth to perspectives.
The hall with the ancient collection
offers a spectacular theatre-like
design, in which chiaroscuro effects

increase the dramatic power of the
works, while showing their formal
diversities. Through the signs of
light produced by optical fibres and
halogen lamps for accent lighting,
the lighting direction stimulates the
visitors' attention with the artworks
as protagonists of the space.
Along a suggestive journey of lights
and artworks, visitors discover
the great European art from the
15th to the 19th century.

In the summer of 2005, during the
175th anniversary of Preußischer
Kulturbesitz and within the
Museumsinsel (Museum Isle)
master project, the Berlin Egyptian
collection Ägyptisches Museum und
Papyrussammlung”, one of the most
famous collections of the world,
was moved to the Altes Museum
(Old Museum), waiting for its final
destination to the Neues Museum,
after the conclusion of the
refurbishment works.
The entire upper floor of the
Museum was fitted out to receive
and exhibit the Egyptians artefacts.
The halls radiate out of the central
staircase around the central circular
space of the building.
The new layout considered the halls
with lateral windows and skylights
as sources of light filtered by a white
diffusing screen on the windows.
The exhibition includes about 179
display cases (with 2-2.5 m height)
arranged freely. The ceiling was
divided into segments orthogonal
to the façade and the division was
emphasized by the use of three-
phase electrified recessed tracks
with adjustable Metro spotlights
with dimmer aimed at the exhibits.
The fixtures were perfectly
integrated in the false ceiling and
provided accent light to highlight the
refined structures and fine quality of
the materials, while accomplishing
general lighting functions.
Historical Museums
The selection of the luminaires was
determined by the decision to use
narrow light beams with 365°
rotation.
The light generated by the spotlights
can be also adjusted with a rotary
potentiometer. The chromatic
rendering index is Ra>90 in the
exhibition areas.
The collection will be transferred
to its final venue in 2009, after
refurbishing and completing the
Neues Museum.

Contemporary Museums
Museums have evolved over time,
undergoing important
transformations. Today, new
museums have the task of
promoting culture by appealing
to higher and higher numbers
of visitors. Here technology,
innovation, creativity and flexibility
are the key words, also for the
lighting design activity that acquires
higher freedom. The function of the
light is no longer limited to highlight
artworks: it suggests journeys and
creates suggestive effects able to
captivate and conquer the observer.

In the heart of Dallas the Nasher
Sculpture Center is a charming
oasis beyond time, a refuge for
arts in voluntary contrast with
the chaos, noise and height
of downtown skyscrapers.
The institution was created to
exhibit, study and preserve the
beauty of modern sculpture in the
largest private collection of the
world, with over 350 works exhibited
indoor and in open air spaces.
The architectural project by
architect Renzo Piano develops
over a rigorous sequence of five
identical pavilions in parallel
position, made of travertine stone,
a material with colour and texture
recalling the image of ancient ruins.
The structure is defined as “no
roof” for the presence of a light
aluminium membrane that covers
the building through which daylight
filters inside. The glass façades that
surround the exhibition halls create
a sense of continuity between
pavilions, garden and street. In this
innovative urban refuge, the lighting
project aims at integrating daylight
and artificial light, creating a
suggestive atmosphere in which
the light underscores the

of an exhibition space which
becomes an intimate delicate
scenario for the exaltation of
sculptures. Le Perroquet spotlights
are integrated in interior spaces
and exterior façades with a strong
innovative design, providing accent
light that blends with the daylight
coming through the roof and the
walls during the day and replaces
natural light at night. The result
is the creation of a fascinating
scenario that converts the Nasher
Sculpture Center in an elegant
artistic “object” to admire.

The High Museum of Art,
established in 1905, houses a
collection of over 11,000 pieces
(American art from the XIX and XX
centuries, European and African art)
and is part of the Woodruff Arts
Center, a non-profit organisation
promoting the visual and
performing arts and encompassing
the Alliance Theatre, the Atlanta
College of Art, the Atlanta
Symphony Orchestra and various
structures aimed at young visitors.
iGuzzini used a new special version
of Le Perroquet 70 W, with street
optic and pole-mounted spotlight,
and the 39W version with flood
optic (used outside for the first
time) to illuminate the new and
extremely important Renzo Piano-
designed museum in the United
States, an extension of the
previous centre which had itself
been designed by another
superstar from the world of
architecture: Richard Meier.
Contemporary Museums
Three new buildings were
constructed, substantially
increasing the amount of exhibition
space available (the surfaces of the
Museum now cover a total area
of 29,000 square metres) and
the opportunity was taken to
accentuate the peculiarities of
the existing building which was
constructed by Richard Meier.

The inauguration of Tenerife Espacio
de las Artes (TEA) of Santa Cruz, in
the Tenerife island, took place in
October 2008. With over 20,000 m2,
TEA is a cultural infrastructure with
the clear contemporary vocation of
collecting art while becoming an
urban fragment in the centre of
town that connects the old district
and the modern area. Herzog &
De Meuron combine a series of
diagonal elements and sloping
floors that include a flight of stairs.
The public space penetrates in
the building through geometric
architectural shapes that favour the
opening towards the outside and
provide dynamism and light, also
at night, when the artificial light
passes through the irregular holes
of the walls. The structure mingles
different spaces and activities
and in addition to art collections,
temporary exhibition halls,
auditorium, library, cafeteria and
shop, it houses the Photography
Centre of the island, the Óscar
Domínguez Institute and Biblioteca
de la Red Insular. For the lighting
project iGuzzini provided
consultancy services and products
to meet the multiple needs of the
areas. The following products were
installed outdoors: recessed
Linealuce integrated in the
architecture with minimum visual
impact to ensure soft uniform light;
ground-recessed Light Up Walk to
Contemporary Museums
guarantee maximum visual comfort;
MaxiWoody and Light Up Walk
Professional, with spot optic,
installed at the end of the stairs to
create suggestive paths of light.
Fluorescent Lineup fittings provide
the ideal indirect lighting in the
library, while special products
(fluorescent reglettes) were
installed in the exhibition halls.
In the permanent exhibition area
Tecnica spotlights with spot and
flood optic were used, together
with suspended Le Perroquet to
underscore details, thanks to their
practical adjustability, and provide
uniform lighting with wall-washer
effect on the walls, when equipped
with glass diffuser.

The Paul Klee Centre in Bern,
inaugurated on June 20th 2005,
houses the world's largest
collection of works by the Swiss
painter, in a "landscape" building
designed by the Genoese architect
Renzo Piano. Three glass and steel
hills give form to an architectural
design that reproduced the
movement of the sea, in harmony
with the surrounding mountainous
landscape and inspired by the idea
of capturing the sense of light
and lightness and the precious
relationship with nature that
characterises Klee's work.
The lighting design involves a
judicious mix of direct and indirect
light provided by suspended and
track-mounted Le Perroquet for
lighting the works with degrees
of brightness ranging from
50 to 100 lux. The indirect
Le Perroquet use 70W metal-halide
lamps with colour temperature
of 4200 and 3000K.

The other luminaires use 75 and
100W low-voltage halogen lamps.
They are all special products,
insofar as they were adapted
for installation on the metal roof
supports, which have different
heights and gradients to create
the wave effect that can be seen
from the outside.

At the beginning of 1996 the
Cuban Government granted the
authorisation for a renovation
and enlargement project for the
National Museum of Fine Arts.
The old complex was enlarged
and integrated with two other
buildings, thus becoming
a national landmark in the
artistic and cultural field.
The main goal of the lighting
project was the integration
between natural and artificial light.
Such a solution allowed to
significantly reduce energy
consumption and operational costs.
The design approach is put into
practice thanks to a detector
parallel to the side walls.
This opening conveys the natural
light filtered by special glasses
along the vertical surface of the
wall and the horizontal plane
of the area adjacent to it.
Non-uniformity is reduced
by the artificial light system.

The installation is composed of
perfectly concealed fluorescent
modules placed in the "luminous
groove" and capable of changing
their luminous intensity thanks to a
pre-set and calibrated programme
relying on proximity sensors
installed in the false ceiling.
Luminance reaches 100 lux on
the upper part of the walls and
gradually goes down to 40 lux
on the walking surfaces.

Lingotto, the first Fiat factory, was
turned into a multi-purpose centre
in 1987. Since September 2002
it has become a new prestigious
venue, designed by Renzo Piano
Building Workshop for temporary
shows and for the exhibition of
Agnelli's private collection.
The new building is located
above the Lingotto.
Interiors
The general lighting of the exhibition
area relies on the natural light
penetrating through the ceiling,
filtered by a false ceiling made of
fabric panels and integrated with
a dimmable fluorescent system,
thus guaranteeing a suitable lighting
level at any time, regardless of the
weather conditions. Accent lighting
is obtained by means of special
Le Perroquet spotlights.

In designing the exterior lighting
for the Scrigno, the scheme
concentrated on creating a
“floating” effect of the building
over the Lingotto, especially visible
at night. This result was achieved by
accurately positioning and aiming
the Lingotto floodlights, thus
creating a contrast of light and
shadow. At night, the Scrigno
seems to be floating, supported
by a carpet of light, as a result
of the lighting of its lower part.

The recuperation of the San Domenico
monumental complex originates
from the intention to integrate
the historical space into the
modern town of Forlì.
From the architectural and functional
viewpoint, the project includes the
restoration of the former church
and convent in order to use them
as auditorium-exhibition space and
museum-art gallery, respectively,
with an elegant system of corridors
with numerous cell doors.
A crucial role was played by the
lighting design, which was entrusted
to Wilmotte & Associes and
Lucchi & Biserni.
Their collaboration with iGuzzini gave
life to two special products especially
studied to give a personalised answer
to the complex' requirements:
a suspended luminaire made of
glass with spotlights and a modular
multi-lamp fitting, which was later
on included in the standard collection
under the name of Composit.
The adjustability of the spotlights and
the possibility to use light sources
or accent lighting in combination
with a fluorescent lamp with indirect
emission allowed to highlight
artworks and architectural details.
The following products were integrated
in the lighting design to better satisfy
Contemporary Museums
the multiple needs of the various
spaces: Linealuce fittings with uniform
soft light, recessed Ledplus for
connection areas, Frame fittings
with high efficacy and minimal
visual impact and Trimmer spotlights
sliding on a special structure.
The structure designed by Jean-Michel
Wilmotte is the evolution of the first
model used at Louvre in Paris. It is an
original trolley fixed to structural rods
by means of tracks. The structure is
provided with plastic wheels that allow
to slide the luminaire body along the
entire length of the rod for maximum
flexibility in case of a different layout
of the lighting design.

The famous Matisse Museum
of Cateau-Cambrésis reopened its
doors to the public on 8 November
2002, exactly 50 years after its
creation, after months of
restoration and restructuring works
under the supervision of architects
Emmanuel and Laurent Baudoin,
under the patronage of the
General Council of the Northern
Department and in close
collaboration with Superintendent
Dominique Szymusiak.
Over 700 prestigious works are
displayed in 17 temporary exhibition
halls, covering an area of 2,400 m2.
Visitors are emotionally taken to a
magic artistic adventure in a space
that still enjoys the atmosphere of
the original historical location.
The lighting design developed by
iGuzzini in close collaboration with
the Superintendence aimed at
creating versatile solutions to adapt
to the museum's changing needs.
Daylight inundates the exhibition
halls through the large openings
and is integrated, both during the
day and in the evening, with a sort
of artificial light which is close to
natural and never aggressive to
valorise and protect the artworks.
Le Perroquet fittings equipped with
optics with different light cones,
devices for the adjustment of the
luminous intensity and elliptical
or diffusing refractors, proved
to be the ideal solution to ensure
uniform balanced light, with
some indirect emission.
Contemporary Museums
In the "Cabinet des dessins"
Gabbiano spotlights with
a special diffusing glass screen
are used to respect the extreme
fragility of the works.
Total flexibility was a major
requirement for the lighting design
of the large hall used for temporary
exhibitions in order to adjust to
different display layouts. After a
careful selection of the luminaires,
which were tested according to
different exhibition designs,
Vela wall washer and Le Perroquet
fittings enriched by a full array
of accessories in the permanent
exhibition halls were chosen.

Cultural Spaces
Art mixes with social life and
originates multiple spaces to host
events, shows, meetings, concerts
and artistic exhibitions. Here light
plays a fundamental role in creating
the most suitable atmosphere and
setting to receive and welcome
visitors. With total flexibility, lighting

events, giving life to suggestive

The temporary exhibition hall of
the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte
Reina Sofia houses the “THE
KINETICS” temporary exhibition.
The exhibition wanted to represent
the concept of movement and
speed that permeated XX century
arts as a plastic element and
reference to modernity. Machines
were a symbol of the technological
progress that was a recurrent
characteristic of the artistic
avant-garde movements.
The exhibition collected over 80
works of 45 Spanish and foreign
artists, such as: Jesús Rafael Soto,
Luis Tomasello and Nicolas Schöffer,
Sandú Darié, and the Argentinian
group Madi. Visitors admired
paintings, objects,
chronophotographies, serigraphy
works, digital prints or films from
the XX and early XXI century, which
kinetics as common denominator.
The space and works are illuminated
with Le Perroquet, Le Perroquet
professional and Lineup.
Characterised by professional
performance, full adjustability and
multiple accessories, Le Perroquet

In April 2007, in Madrid, three years
after the terrible terrorist attack
of March 11 at Atocha station,
the Spanish Royals inaugurated a
memorial to the victims designed
by studio FAM “Fascinante Aroma
y Manzana”. The imposing
sculpture opposite the station
is characterised by its 11m-high
cylindrical glass dome.
The structure is composed of
two layers of different material:
the external “skin” made
of glass blocks and the internal
“membrane” made of ETFE, a light
transparent material where the
innumerable messages received
after the tragic event were printed.
When entering the monument
from the station hall, visitors arrive
to s large hall named “Light Blue
Emptiness”: an underground dark
space that is the key interpretation
element of the work. Here, light-
blue walls take visitors towards
the light to a small hole through
which they can observe the

is lit outwards, with the shades and
reflections created by glass and
ETFE, and becomes a sort of huge
candle lit in the middle of the night.

Originally the venue of San Carlo
Hospital, the Museo Nacional
Reina Sofia in Madrid underwent
a long series of transformations
over time, finally acquiring
the appearance it has today.
After considerably increasing the
number of collections, temporary
exhibitions, audiovisual and
education activities, the museum
decided to enlarge the area of the
structure. The works started in 2001
under the supervision of architect
Jean Nouvel, and were completed
in 2005. The museum and the
entire surroundings were modified
to answer to the new necessities.
To celebrate the great French
architect, the MNCARS organised
an exhibition to divulge Nouvel’s
works and social commitment
for the architecture and the city.
The exhibition includes six theme
sequences with completed,
unfinished and ongoing projects.
It is not a retrospective, exhaustive
or scientific exhibition, being
exclusively based on images,
with photos, fixed or interactive
projections to immerse visitors
in the correct atmosphere
for Nouvel's poetics.

The Champs Libres, at Rennes
Métropole, are an innovative
cultural infrastructure that extends
over a surface of 35,280 m2.
It is a single construction that
brings under one roof the three
most important cultural facilities
in the town culture: the Musée
de Bretagne, the Espace des
sciences and the Public Library.
The place is designed to create
a strong synergy between the
three institutes to make culture
and knowledge enjoyable
and accessible for citizens.
The architectural project, entrusted
to Christian de Portzamparc,
did not intend to merge the three
institutes, but integrate them in
such a way that each one could be
immediately seen and recognised
through special geometric shapes
and large volumes. While the
Musée de Bretagne seems to
envelop the other two buildings
as a ribbon and the "Espace des
sciences" is a giant zinc cone that
hosts a spherical planetarium, the
Library is a six-storey metal and
glass building conceived as an
upturned pyramid. While playing
with transparent glazed walls,
artificial lighting has a crucial role in
order to give an efficacious answer
to the multiple needs of this multi-
functional building. In the Library
Optica downlighters guarantee
diffused relaxing light without glare,
and Pixel plus generate excellent

The Beaubourg cultural centre was
completed in Paris in 1977 and
is undoubtedly one of the major
works of modern architecture.
The initially High-Tech building
was ironically referred to as
"the refinery", however as time
went by, it became one of
favourite meeting points in Paris.
Every year it counts higher
numbers of visitors compared
to the other monuments and
buildings of the city.
The level of lighting on ground level
is equal to 150/170 lux spread
evenly all over the forum (values
on ground level, given that the
forum is 12 metres high).
General lighting is entrusted to a
luminaire specially designed for
the Beaubourg that is situated
according to a regular layout and
that reminds one, thanks to its
shape, of the numerous tubes
which make up the main
characteristic features of the
building and that help create the
cultural spaces
typical atmosphere of an industrial
structure In order to realise Renzo
Piano's project, some brand new
types of luminaires had to be
developed: suspended elements
that soar light and free in the
environment, loaded with a thrust
recalling the flight of birds, without
desecrating the architecture of the
building. Moreover, they are a
source of visual comfort, their
effects being similar to that of
a filigree piece of furniture.

The “Knowing the Shape” project,
born from the collaboration
between iGuzzini and the Central
Institute for Restoration, saw its
first edition in 2006 in Milan, and
then travelled to Paris in 2007.
Conceived to identify one or more
methodologies of analysis and
lighting design and give museum
and exhibition curators a higher
awareness when lighting up a
sculpture, the project intended to
explore new perceptive modalities
beyond light and sight.
The project developed in two
directions, “Shapes to see” and
“Shapes to touch”, in which a
model of an artwork was first
“read” by some personalities and
then made available to be touched
and perceived also by the blind.
The Milan event saw the
participation of the journalist and
novelist Vincenzo Cerami, the art
critic and design historian Gillo
Dorfles, the director of the Italian
Association for the Prevention of
Blindness Angelo Mombelli and the
archaeologist Paolo Moreno, who
were asked to illuminate a perfect
copy of the "Dancing Satyr"
according to their own personal
interpretation. In 2007, in Paris,
during an exhibition dedicated to
Praxiteles, the Greek sculptor who
is the alleged author of the Satyr, the
Louvre Museum asked for iGuzzini's
collaboration to stage the exhibition.
As in Milan, three French famous
personalities were called to give their
own interpretation of the statue: the
head of the Department of Greek,

partially sighted opera singer
Agnès Robert. In her opinion, the
use of colour permitted to identify
a new vision of the sculpture and

visitors. To minimise the visual
impact iGuzzini created a black
lacquered wood stage and white
fabric wings backlit with RGB
fluorescence that changed colour
according to the scene design
of the individual interpreters. Tecnica

The Maison Européenne de la
Photographie (Mep) presents a
complex art installation dedicated
to photography and light:
“Words” by Alfredo Pirri. An 4x8m
installation in which white Carrara
marble and broken red glass
create a special landscape that
is a metaphor of the world.
Organised in collaboration with
the Adnkronos press agency and
iGuzzini, who supplied lighting
consultancy services and products,
the installation is a great homenage
to photography in its ethimological
meaning of “writing of light”.
The headlines of the news broadcast on
the net by Adnkronos pass on a small
monitor near the installation.
For each of the news, two key words -
either positive or negative ones - are
highlighted and used to set the power
and colour temperature of the light.
Light animates the creation
with three Sivra modules with
biodynamic light installed in front
of the observer to back-lit the
work, creating a large window.
The power and colour temperature
of the light change irregularly
according to the spirit of the
news sent every day by
Adnkronos to the Mep.
Here an invisible terminal filters
the information through an
algorithm that extracts a pair of
values from a list of 100 words,
50 for power and 50 for colour
temperature, in real time.

The small monitor next to the
installation shows the news and
the two key words that determine
the light. If Adnkronos broadcasts
news with positive terms, such as
“good” and “peace”, respectively
for intensity level and colour
temperature, the light on the
installation will be stronger and
brighter; vice versa, negative words
as “blood” and “defeat” will result
in weaker colder light. In this way
Sivra is linked to the flow of news
to arouse emotions and involve
visitors.

On 21 November 2006 the main
Italian government authorities took
part in the inauguration of the new
Triennale spaces, a new centre
for contemporary living.
As the architect Pierluigi Cerri
has himself stated, the Bovisa
installation does not come
under the typical definition
of "architecture".
Cerri has come up with a big white
parallelepiped covered in PVC,
conceiving it as a temporary
structure, though in the sense
of a structure catering to the
needs of an area in the throes
of transformation. More exactly,
the space is conceived as a
structure able to communicate
or amplify the events organised
within its compass: iGuzzini
is among the project partners,
having provided both the
internal and external lighting.
Around one thousand track-
mounted Le Perroquet spotlights
are used to light the indoor
exhibition space, which can be
adapted to host different types
of performances.

The light provided by Le Perroquet
is supplemented by a number of
different fixtures: Compact Easy
modules in the conference room,
Line up wall washer for the
bookshop shelves, wall-mounted
Lingotto for emergency lighting.
The exterior lighting, similarly,

for the façade, Woody floodlights
for safety exits, and for entrance

The Exhibition Palace built between
1880 and 1883 has always been
a unique building in Rome.
Born to exalt the city's cultural
vocation with exhibitions and
events, it was characterised
by total symmetry on all axes,
with impressive style and
decoration that disorientated
visitors with confusing layouts
and unclear visit routes.
The five-year renovation project
started in 2003 to update the
facilities in functional and
technological terms, combining
the monumental architecture
with innovation elements.
Today the Palace covers over
12,000 m2 on three storeys
with maximum design flexibility.
The large central hall is the
powerful heart of the building:
a double-height hall with a large
central eye that allows daylight
to penetrate without control
from above.
The lighting system was a key
point of the recent restructuring
works and includes a series of
suspended long and thin ceilings
that house the lighting fixtures
created in close collaboration
with De Lucchi, as well technical
equipment for the exhibitions.

The National Centre of the
Performing Arts is an authentic
cultural island in the middle of a
lake, in the heart of Beijing, about
500 metres away from Tian An Men
Square and the Forbidden City.
Identified by the large grey titanium
and glass dome with ellipsoidal
shape, the building includes three
auditoriums (one for opera, one
for concerts and one for drama),
a lounge with a splendind view
of the city, numerous open-air
exhibition spaces and internal areas
inspired by the town, with streets,
squares, shops and restaurants.
For the lighting design iGuzzini
collaborated with the architect
Paul Andreu and the lighting
designer Kaoru Mende to create
a magic atmosphere of light.
Two types of fittings - Le Perroquet
spotlights and recessed Light Up
Walk Professional - were used to
illuminate the common areas and
the foyer, which stands out at night
from the transparent building
towards the urban landscape.
Le Perroquet with anti-glare screen
are installed along the upper edge
of the external perimeter of the
buildings, ensuring excellent
performance and maximum visual
comfort. A carefully studied lighting
design was developed for the
surface of the large dome divided

in 4 horizontal levels. The lowest
level in the back of the theatre
and concert hall is illuminated with
recessed Light Up Walk professional
with wall washer optic that
guarantee perfect light on the walls,
enphatising the colour and warmth
of the wood. The other levels of the
vault are lit with Le Perroquet with
spot and flood optic installed at two
different heights and aimed in such
a way to create decrerasing colour
shades and tones on the wooden
surfaces. Finally, Zoom mini spots
are used for the artworks exhibited
in the corridors.

In the brand new Oriental Art
Centre of Shanghai in the Pu Dong
district of Shanghai completed
in December 2004. the Parisian
architect Paul Andreu has created,
in his own words, “a radiant and
transparent building, as if by
magic.” The orchid-shaped
Shanghai Oriental Arts Centre
covers an area of some 23,350
square metres. Surrounded by a
large park, it is one of the largest
and best known projects built in
Shanghai, if not in the whole
of Asia, in the past two years.
It is a public cultural building
funded by the City of Shanghai.
The complex accommodates three
auditoriums: a 1,979-seat concert
hall, a theatre with seating for
1,054 people and an auditorium
for chamber music, with a capacity
of 330. It also accommodates
annexed public structures, such
as an exhibition hall, music shops,
a restaurant, an art library and a
multimedia and training centre.
Paul Andreu wanted this "melting
pot" of music and theatre to have
a strong visual impact, especially
in the evening, when the audiences
are inside. He also wanted to convey
a sense of mystery, without creating
a closed or heavy structure.

Paul Andreu used Gem luminaires
in all entrances to common areas,
in shopping areas and side

Control system for RGB Colour Dynamic Quick is a simple
DALI LEDs flexible system used to control LED
and RGB fluorescent luminaires to
execute predefined light and colour
scenes in sequences, forming
versatile plays of light and endless
chromatic effects, such as chasing
effects, transitions, passages, and
colour changes. Settings come to
life and are filled with lively
chromatic tones and colour
mixtures. A fantasy of luminous
scenes to meet the user's lighting
requirements at best.
The Plug and Program* system
allows for setting the products
individually to obtain schemes and
sequences that are emphasised by
the available programmes.
*Upon first installation the products must
be recognised and ordered to obtain the
