Instructions for Installing ArcGIS 9

Following are instructions for installing ArcGIS 9, with associated ArcGIS Tutorial Data
and ArcObjects Developer Kit components, ESRI Data files, and the ESRI Software
Documentation Library.

ArcGIS software can only be installed on University-owned computers running Windows

XP or 2000. ESRI recommends computers running this software have a minimum 800
MHz processor and a minimum of 256 Mb of RAM (though 512 Mb or more is strongly
recommended due to computational processing overhead).

A “complete” installation of the ArcGIS software, Tutorial Data and Developer Kit
requires about 1.5 GigaBytes of disk space. To reduce this heavy disk requirement you
can “customize” the installation to select only the components and Tutorial Data that
you want. For instance, the Tutorial Data and Developer Kit components collectively
occupy about 750 Mbytes of disk space. But, later, if you want to add ArcGIS software
components that were not selected during the initial installation then you will have to re-
acquire the software CD packet from NACS and go through the installation procedure
again. As such, we suggest you choose a “complete” installation as indicated in the
steps below.

ESRI Data files are voluminous and can occupy much more space on your hard disk.
You should be selective about what GIS data you will need for your project work during
the installation of GIS data, below.

Before proceeding, verify that the ArcGIS 9 CD packet that you received from NACS
has a floppy disk (which contains the software license file) and the following CDs:

¾ ArcGIS 9 | ArcEditor | 9.0 for Windows | Single Use

¾ ArcGIS 9 | ArcGIS Desktop Developer Kit | 9.0 for Windows
¾ ArcGIS 9 | ESRI Software Documentation Library
¾ ArcGIS 9 | ESRI Data & Maps and StreetMap USA (DVD)
¾ ArcGIS 9 | ESRI Data & Maps | Image Data (DVD)
¾ ArcGIS 9 | ESRI Data & Maps | United States (CD)
¾ ArcGIS 9 | ESRI Data & Maps | World, Europe, Canada and Mexico (CD)

If any of these media products are not in the packet then return the packet to the NACS
Response Center and identify the media products that are missing.

Installing ArcGIS 9, Tutorial Data and Developer Kit

Before installing ArcGIS 9 on your computer you must first remove ArcGIS 8.x from
your computer. ArcGIS 9 simply won't install if ArcGIS 8.x currently resides on your
computer. Also, exit all programs before starting the installation process.

Installing ArcGIS 9 1 NACS Response Center

1) To remove ArcGIS 8.x (a.k.a., ArcGIS Desktop) go to:

Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs

then click to highlight ArcGIS Desktop, and click the Remove button.

A message will appear that states "Are you sure you want to remove ArcGIS
Desktop from your computer?" Click Yes.

Over a period of many minutes ArcGIS 8.x (Desktop) will be removed from your
computer.

2) Do the same removal procedure for ArcGIS Tutorial Data and ArcGIS ArcObjects
Developer Kit if these components are currently installed on your computer.

3) Once ArcGIS 8.x and its associated tutorial data are removed from your computer,
insert the floppy disk into your computer’s floppy disk reader and copy the ArcGIS
license file (it has a name beginning with “UNK”) to the c:\arcgis folder on your
computer. You might have to create this folder if t does not currently exist.

Once the file is copied, remove the floppy disk from your computer and return the floppy
to the ArcGIS CD packet.

4) Insert the CD titled “ArcGIS 9 / ArcEditor / 9.0 for Windows / Single Use.” You will
be presented with the following ArcGIS 9 installation splash page.
