What are the causes of damage in masonry buildings & how do you improve the
behavior of masonry wail
Discuss the choice of materials for the earthquake resistant design
b) A four storey (G+3) reinforced concrete office building built in medium soil site has a
ground plan 20X15 m and its elevation is as shown in fig. the imposed load on the roof
is 1..5 kN/m2 and that on floor is 3kN/m2. Determine the seismic load on the frame by
IS 1893:2002. Assume that there is a shear wall in the Y-direction. The roof & floor
slabs are 150mm thick. The size of the beam is 250x400mm and columns
400X500mm. the height of floor is 3m There is a 12cm thick brick wall around each
floor of the building. Assume location in zone - III . Assume SMRF construction is
used.

A three storied school building is in seismic Zone IV. Its foundation is an isolated
footing on medium soil and the period of oscillation of the building time 0.2 sec.
Compute the horizontal seismic co-efficient Oh by
i) Static method
ii) Dynamic method. Assuming damping factor 5% for SMRF & OMRF(Ah)
