upon requirement.

1.

Start-up Time Supervision:

Starting time supervision protects the motor against unwanted prolonged starts that might occur
in the event of excessive load torque or excessive voltage drops within the motor, or if the rotor is
locked. Rotor temperature is calculated from measured stator current. This function is activated
as soon as the ADR244A relay detects a start by T1 status from the breaker or start by current.
The movement current cross 1.5xIFLA of setting, relay will start timer and start calculating delay
by following formula:
Delay = (Istartup / I)2 * Tstartup
and after this time delay relay will provide trip command.
Where
I = Maximum phase current value
I startup = Motor Startup current value setting 1 to 5xIFLA
Tstartup = Motor Startup time delay setting 1 to 180 Sec
The value applied on Tstartup is dependent on the state of the motor, cold or warm. This warm or
cold state of the motor is determined by the thermal model of the rotor. Because the flow of
current is the cause of the heating of the motor windings, this equation will accurately calculate
the starting supervision time. The accuracy will not be affected by reduced terminal voltage that
could cause a prolonged start. The trip time is an inverse current dependant characteristic (It).
Any of the output element from RL1 to RL10 can be assign to this function.

(Preliminary)

Thermal Overload Element:

In ADR244A relay models, this function is used to measure the temperature or thermal state of
the motor winding. The thermal overload protection can be selectively enabled or disabled. The
RMS and negative sequence components of the load current are measured independently and
are combined together to form an equivalent current Ieq The heating effect in the thermal replica
is produced by Ieq and therefore takes into account the heating effect due to both RMS and
negative sequence components of current.( I2)
The equivalent motor heating current is calculated by:
Ieq = (Irms+ K I2)
Irms : root mean square current(max value of three phase current)
I2 : negative sequence current
K is a constant proportional to the thermal capacity of the motor set 0 to 10.
The equivalent motor heating current is calculated every 20ms for a 50Hz system. The maximum
value recorded will then be utilized by the thermal algorithm.
Starting from this equivalent thermal current, the thermal state of the motor is calculated
according to the following formula:
i+1 = (Ieq /I ) [1 exp (t/T)] + i exp (-t/T)
I > is the thermal overload current threshold.
i is the value of the thermal state calculated above (1 cycle before, ie. 20ms in a 50Hz system).
It is the iteration cycle time (20 ms for a 50 Hz system, 16,67 ms for a 60 Hz system).

The equation used to calculate the trip time at 100% of thermal state is:

t = ln ((k- A)/(k-1))
A multiple time constant is used, in order to take into account the different sequences of the motor
overload, starting or cooling conditions.
Where the value of (thermal time constant) depends on the current value absorbed by the
motor:
= T1 if IFLA < Ieq< = 2* IFLA overload time constant
= T2 if Ieq> 2* IFLA

start-up time constant

= Tr if interrupting device opened cooling time constant

IFLA = thermal full load current setting
k = Ieq / IFLA = measured thermal load (or thermal capacity)
A = initial state of the machine, in percentage of the thermal state

The initial state of the machine is included in the formula, so that the operating time for a thermal
trip will be decreased in case of a hot motor start. During the starting of motors which have
extreme starting conditions, such as very long start times or very high start current values an
inhibition of the thermal curve during start-up is provided, in order to avoid false trips. If the
calculated thermal state reaches 90% before the end of the starting period, this value is retained
at 90% for the remaining period of the Prol. Start Time . At the end of the starting period the
inhibit is removed. The trip signal is reset if Thermal state is less than set pick-up value.
Thermal alarm function: ALARM
The purpose of this function is to produce an alarm signal indicating that the thermal state of the
motor has exceeded ALARM setting 20% to 100%. Corrective action can thus be taken before
thermal tripping occurs.
The equation used to calculate the time to the thermal alarm is:
talarm = ln(k/(kThermal Alarm /100))
FORBID. START:
This function makes it possible to block a start on a hot motor, a further start is inhibited for the
motor as long as its thermal state is higher than an adjustable threshold FORBID START. It is
then necessary to wait until the motor cools down. When the value of the thermal state falls
below the threshold FORBID START, the starting of the motor is authorized. FORBID START
information is activated if Motor shut down and Thermal state value higher
than the threshold FORBID START setting 20% to 100%.
Any of the output elements from RL1 to RL10 can be assigned to this function.
3.

Stall Detection Element:

The Prolong Start function protects the motor against excessive start-up over current. To this
effect, it uses a start-up current threshold Istart setting 1 to 5x IFLA, and a start-up time-delay
tIstart. This threshold and this time delay can be adjusted to allow the starting current to pass.
This function is activated (time delay tIstart initiated) as soon as the ADR 244A relay detects a
start (the criterion for detection of a start by T1 status from the breaker or start by current).
Start Detection Criteria:
1) 52A : T1 (CBNO) status input is monitored.

2) VI Start: If all Phase current is greater than 5% of IFLA or all 3 phase voltage is greater than
set 3 phase voltage check then it is VI start condition .

It is deactivated on expiry of the starting current time delay tIstart. If, on expiry of the time delay
tIstart, the current consumed by the motor has not fallen below the threshold Istart>, a prolonged
start signal Prolong start t Istart will be generated.

Locked rotor at start:

This function, which makes it possible to detect that the motor is locked at the start, is activated
only during the starting phase that is during the course of the starting time delay tIstart. It uses a
motor speed indication received via a logic input of the ADR244A relay set on SPEED SW and
the tIstall time-delay locked rotor time (a speed switch device must be connected to this logic
input). On detection of a start, the "locked rotor at start" function is activated the time delay tIstall
begins. At the end of this time delay, the logic input set on SPEED SW must be in logic state 1 to
indicate that the motor speed is not zero. The opposite case (zero speed) means that the rotor is
locked, so the ADR244A relay generates a trip signal of locked rotor at start order LOCKED
ROTOR.

Stall Detection:
This function, which makes it possible to detect stalling while the motor is running, is activated
immediately after the starting period, that is on expiry of the starting time delay tIstart two
parameters can be set: the stalled rotor current threshold Istall setting 1 to 5xIFLA, with its
associated time delay tIstall, the stalled rotor time. The ADR 244A relay detects the over current
caused by stalling and generates information that the rotor has stalled while the motor is running
if the phase current exceeds the threshold Istall for a length of time greater than tIstall. The trip
signal is reset if measured current is less than set pick-up value or motor is stop. Any of the
output element from RL1 to RL10 can be assign to this function.

Re-acceleration after a reduction in system voltage:

A fall in voltage from the electrical network causes a reduction in rotor speed. When the voltage is
restored, the rotor starts on a re-acceleration phase in order to regain its nominal speed.
The stall protection will be disabled, to allow for re-acceleration, if a low voltage condition exists
on the system for a time in excess of 10 sec and if, upon recovery of the Reac Low V set 10V to
60V, the current exceeds the stalling current threshold within 5 seconds If the current fails to fall
below the stalling current threshold before the end of the Prol.Start Time, the relay will generate
a tripping order If the current exceeds the stalling current threshold after the 5sec window used
for reacceleration criteria, the stall protection will be enabled and a trip will occur. This function is
disabled during the starting period.
4.

Start Number Element:

Repeated starting, or intermittent operation of a motor, may generate dangerously high
temperatures within the motor, unless sufficient time is allowed for cooling between starts. The
ADR244A relay incorporates a number of starts limitation facilities. This limitation is fully
programmable and is applicable to both hot and cold start conditions. A hot start is defined if
thermal state greater than the set value and a cold start is defined as a thermal state lower than
set value.
Starts are detected using the T1 status from the breaker or start by current. Once the number of
starts equals the user defined setting, the start inhibit is enabled for the inhibit time set period.
Example 1: Let two maximum number of cold starts is selected and both is completed within the
set Time betw.2 cold start has been reached, therefore, the Inhib. Start Time is initiated. The
remaining time Time betw.2 cold start - tn is greater than the Inhib. Start Time, so the start
inhibition remains for a duration equal to Time betw.2 cold start tn.

Anti-Backspin protection:
The ABS (anti-backspin) function imposed a waiting time between a stop and a re-start of the
motor. This waiting time makes it possible to stop rotating before the motor is re-started. It is
based on the use of an adjustable time delay: tABS. This time-delay is initiated when a motor stop
is detected. As long as this timer is running, an ABS alarm indication issued. This ABS indication
disappears at the end of the tABS time-delay

Fig. Anti-Backspin

5.

Over Current Element:

Over current faults also referred to as short circuits, can cause motor failures and fires. Over
currents can be caused by phase-to-phase and phase-to-ground-to-phase faults. A short circuit
results in a sudden surge of current which can reach several hundred times the working current
within milliseconds which increase the temperature of rotor winding and damage the motor.
The relay has three independent stages of over current (IP>, IP>>, & IP>>>) element. The setting
range of IP> and IP>> is 10% to 250% with selectable IDMT / DT time delay and setting range of
IP>>> is 50% to 3000% with Instantaneous / DT time delay.
For phase the output of 1st stage (IP>) is separate and not connected to trip contact.
The output of all stages can be assigned to any of 10 programmable relay through key board.
While output of 2nd and 3rd stage is connected to trip element. Thus 1st stage can be used as
ALARM before TRIP or can be used to TRIP another CB before tripping main CB.

Although the curves tend towards infinite when the current approaches In (general threshold), the
minimum guaranteed value of the operating current for all the curves with the inverse time
characteristic is 1.1In (with a tolerance of 0.05In).
Doubling feature:
If doubling feature is enabled and motor start is detected then Ip>>> setting will be doubled for
duration of Tsafe.

6.

Earth Fault Element:

As the stator windings are completely enclosed in grounded metal, the fault would very quickly
involve earth, the presence of the surrounding metallic frame that rapidly develops current to flow
through the earth winding increases the motor temperature which may damage the insulation of
the motor winding so that the motor will fail.
In ADR244A use standard star connection at relay side and internally reconstruct phase to phase
voltage required for direction detection. Similarly relay calculates open delta voltage (3Vo) and EF
current (3Io) required for detection of EF element.
The relay has two different type of Earth Fault one is marked as 3Io and another is marked as IE.
The 3Io is derived internally by software through phase current while IE is measured from
external CT. Thus IE can be used as Core Balance CT (CBCT).
The relay has three independent stages of Internal Earth Fault current (3Io>, 3Io>>, & 3Io>>>)
element. The setting range of 3Io> and 3Io>> is 10% to 100% with selectable IDMT / DT time

Current Unbalance Protection:

Current Unbalance function, which protects the motor against unbalance conditions, broken
conductor and phase inversions, is based on the measurement of the delta I current which is
given by
When the average current, Iav, is greater than the motor-rated full load current, the relay
calculates the percent imbalance:
IUB% = (Imax Iavg) * 100%
Iavg
When the average current is less than motor-rated full load current, the relay calculates percent
unbalance:
IUB% = (Imax Iavg) * 100%

current, Iavg is average value of three phases = (IA+IB+IC)/3
If the calculated IUB% current is more than the set Iu>> then relay will generates a trip signal due
to unbalance after a time delay calculated by set DT delay.

Negative sequence over current:

Negative sequence over current takes place due to:
(1) Magnitude differences between the three-phase currents,
(2) The presence of phase unbalance.
Even small current unbalance can lead to large negative sequence currents because of the small
negative sequence reactance.Which produce a reverse field in motors which drives the rotor at
twice the frequency so eddy currents are induced on the surface of the rotor, leading to
temperature rise in the rotor and damage the winding of motor.
The ADR244A include negative phase sequence over current element which protects the motor
against unbalance conditions, broken conductor and phase reversal is based on the
measurement of the negative sequence component of the current. Two stage of negative
sequence over current thresholds are available. The setting range of I2>> is 10% to 150% with
selectable IDMT / DT time delay and setting range of I2>>> is 50% to 1500% with DT time delay.

ASHIDA Numerical Motor Protection Relay

Type: ADR244A
( AD I T Y A V 2 S e r i e s )
(Preliminary)

Phase Reversal:
The phase reversal protection is based on the calculated negative phase sequence current and
detects too high NPS current values during motor start up, caused by incorrectly connected
phases, which in turn will cause the motor to rotate in the opposite direction.
When the calculated NPS current value exceeds 75% of the maximum phase current value,
the phase reversal element will generates a trip signal after a fixed 200ms operate time.
The element will be reset in 200ms after the calculated NPS current value has fallen below 75%
of the maximum phase current value.
The NPS or unbalance element will be blocked during the tripping of the phase reversal
element.

9.

Under Voltage Element:

Under voltage conditions may occur on a power system as a result of increased loading, fault
conditions or incorrect regulation, when the voltage is going to reduce at permissible limit then
current is increase (KVA rating of the motor is constant) that increases the motor temperature
which may damage the insulation of the motor winding or motor will stall when subjected to
prolonged under voltage condition.
This function is only enabled when the circuit breaker is closed, therefore it requires a CB
auxiliary contact T1 mapped to an opto input to monitor the breaker status and deactivated during
the motor start-up stage (i.e. If "INHIB V<" set to "YES" by the user). If INHIB V< is set NO and
the measured voltage of any phase is less than set voltage V<, V<< relay will generates a trip
signal after set IDMT / DT time delay.
The under voltage protection included within the ADR244A relays consists of two independent
stages. The relay has two stages of Under Voltage (V<, V<<) element. The setting range of V<
and V<< is 15V to 60V L- N with IDMT / DT time delay
Two stages are included to provide both alarm and trip stages, where required. Any of the output
elements from RL1 to RL10 can be assign to this function. The output can be use for alarm or
tripping of CB.

The IDMT characteristic available on the first stage is defined by the following formula:
t = K / (1-M)
Where:
K = Time multiplier setting
t = Operating time in seconds
M = Measured voltage/relay setting voltage
10.

Over voltage element:

Over voltage takes place due to sudden loss of load and transient surges on the network. This
function, which makes it possible to detect a voltage increase, uses a phase-phase over voltage
protection with a definite time characteristic because as voltage is increases torque is increases
(T square of V ) so the current consumption increases as well leading to increase in motor temp.
with every increase in current. A long period of increased current consumption may damage the
insulation of the winding.
The Over voltage protection included within the ADR244A relays consists of two independent
stages. The relay has two stages of Over Voltage (V>, V>>) element. The setting range of V> and
V>> is 50V to 100V L- N with IDMT / DT time delay.
The IDMT characteristic available on the first stage is defined by the following formula:
t = K / (M - 1)

K = Time multiplier setting
t = Operating time in seconds

The trip signal is reset if measured voltage is less than set pick-up voltage. 1st stage is used for
alarm only and 2nd stage is used for alarm and trip signal. These elements are followed by an
independently selectable IDMT time delay. Any of the output elements from RL1 to RL10 can be
assign to this function. The output can be use for alarm or tripping of CB.

11.

Residual O/V Protection:Residual over voltage protection is available for stator earth fault protection where there is an
isolated or high impedance earth fault occurs on the primary system, this balance is upset and a
'residual' voltage is produced. The residual voltage can be measured from a residual voltage input
at the secondary terminals of a voltage transformer having a "broken delta" secondary connection
or can be calculated from the three phase to neutral voltage 3Vo measurements. The Setting is
from 5V to 50V. Two independent stage (VN>,VN>>) of protection are provided for each
measured neutral voltage input and also for the calculated value, 1st Stage can be selected as
either Inverse Definite Minimum Time (IDMT) or Definite Time (DT). 2nd Stage can be selected as
Definite Time (DT) only.
The IDMT characteristic available on the first stage is defined by the following formula:
t = TMS / (1 - M)
Where;
TMS = Time Multiplier Setting
t = Operating Time in Seconds
M = Derived Residual Voltage / Relay Setting Voltage.
The relay will generate trip a signal after set IDMT / DT time delay when the measured Residual
O/V is above the set VN> or VN>> value. Any of the output elements from RL1 to RL10 can be
assign to this function.

Under Current Element:

The Under current function which makes it possible to detect a loss of load, for example protect a
pump against becoming unprimed or to stop a motor in case of a mechanical transmission (e.g.
conveyor belt or very low load), or it can be used with synchronous motors to protect against loss
of supply condition which increases in starting time and overheating the motor.
The relay has two stages of Under current (I<, I<<) element. The setting range of I< and I<< is
10% to 100% with DT time delay
Under current is associated with the inhibit start time delay Tinhib. This function is deactivated
when the motor is shut down (logic input T1 in the 0 state) and also during the start up relay
inhibit tripping in under current function, this function is activated at the end of the inhibit time
delay. The time delay Tinhib is useful for motors with no-load starting which take on load
gradually at the end of starting. When the motor is running then after expiry of the inhibit time
delay, if the value of one of the phase currents consumed by the motor is lower than the under
current threshold value for a period greater than or equal to set DT, the relay will generate a
under current signal.
Trip signal is reset if measured current is more than set under current value or motor is shut
down 1st stage is used for alarm indication and 2nd stage is used to provide both alarm and trip,
where required. Any of the output elements from RL1 to RL10 can be assign to this function. The
output can be use for alarm or tripping of CB.

Active Under/Over Power Element:

The Loss of Load protection within the ADR244A relay uses 2 stages under power elements to
detect a loss of load due to a shaft failure or a pump running unprimed. Both stages are
selectable to Definite Time (DT). This feature is only enabled when the motor start is detected.
Three phase active power is calculated as:

If the minimum 3 phase active power is less than the programmed P< or P<< setting (1W to 120
W) threshold value then after pickup timer will start, a trip will be initiated at the completion of a
settable time delay plus drop-off time delay and remains in trip until the CB contact T1 is zero or
the 3 active power is more than set value.1st stage is used for alarm indication and 2nd stage is
used for alarm as well as trip signal.

(Preliminary)

A low forward power condition can only be established when the circuit breaker is closed and the
active power calculated is above zero.1st stage of under and over power is used for alarm
purpose only and 2nd stage used for trip signal, Any of the output element from RL1 to RL10 can
be assign to this function.
14.

Power Factor Element:

Power factor protection will be provided for out-of-step protection on synchronous machines. The
3ph power factor is taken into account: a drop-off time during the motor start time can be used, in
order to avoid tripping orders during starts. This feature is only enabled when the circuit breaker
is closed, therefore it requires status T1 of circuit breaker auxiliary contact mapped to an opto
input to get the information CB closed / CB open.
This feature can be inhibited during starting by selecting an appropriate Tinhib time delay.
The relay will generate trip a signal after set time delay when the measured Power factor is
greater than set P Lead or P Lag value.

15.

Reverse Power:
When a power supply failure occurs on the feeder, synchronous motors will become generators
due to the inertia of their load and the induction motors will start to work as generators. The aim of
the reverse power protection is to detect the inverse flow of Power and to avoid that the motor
feeds the fault which has appeared on the network.
Reverse power protection is used to detect loss of the prime mover. A reverse active power
element provides anti-motoring protection. The reverse power element may be set as low as 2%
of the generator rated power.
The relay will generate trip a signal after set time delay when the measured reverse Power is
greater than set RP> value.

16.

Under / Over Frequency Element:

This feature is required to protect synchronous machines against loss of AC, because, in this
case, a

loaded motor will decelerate fairly quickly on loss of supply and the frequency of the

terminal voltage will fall. Two independent measuring elements, followed by a definite time delay,
are available for under frequency protection.
This function is disabled in the following conditions.
during start-up (during the Prol. Start Time timer),
when the motor is stopped (Interrupting device open),
If the frequency cannot be determined (for example, if there is no analogue input connected to
the relay).

Note: Due to our policy to upgrade our products constantly, we reserve the right to

3 Phase Voltage check :

Checking of the phase voltages before the start of the motor. This function makes it possible to
check that the system voltage level is sufficient to allow a satisfactory motor start sequence. It is
only valid when the relay "sees" the motor is stopped. With the motor stopped, the ADR244A
relay issues a "Low V" alarm indication if the measured voltage (between any phases A, B and C)
is below a settable threshold, "Start Low V Set "10V to 60 V. For a good starting condition, the
positive sequence voltage (V1) should be greater than the negative sequence voltage (V2) and
the phase voltages VA and VB and VC should be greater than the user settable threshold Start
Low V Set.The result of this function may be used into the programmable scheme logic in order to
inhibit the start of the motor if the voltage is not sufficient.

Breaker Failure Detection:The breaker failure function is used to quickly detect that a circuit-breaker has not opened (phase
fault currents still present) after a trip signal. This function is based on a "I<BF" current threshold
setting 10% to 100% and on a "tBF" time-delay; these two settings can be configured by the user
in General Settings Menu. Normally after tripping, current should become Zero within 100
200ms time depending upon type of fault and breaker mechanism. After Fault ADR244A trigger
internal timer (settable from 100 ms to 1000 ms) if fault is not cleared during this time then relay
declare as Breaker fail (LBB function) and change another contacts. This contact is marked as
Breaker Fail can be used to trip back up breaker or can be used to generate ALARM signal.

20.

I/O and AND Eq. Configuration:

AND LOGIC EQUAT allows the operator to programme four AND logic equations. Each equation
can be the logic AND link of signals from internal functions or from external binary input signals.
In this submenu, the operator sets the parameter cells of each of the 4 AND logic equations by
assigning individual signals to the individual AND logic equations. An operating timer stage and a
reset timer stage are assigned to each AND logic equation. These eight independent timer stages
can be set in the submenu AND LOGIC EQUAT T DELAY.
The operating timer stage Toperat is initiated only if all the associated data in the logic equation
are in logic state 1 (AND gate). It allows the logic equation validation to be delayed for a time
period set in Toperat. The reset timer stage Treset is initiated as soon as any of the data
associated with the equation disappears i.e. goes to logic state 0. It allows the logic equation to
remain valid for a time period set in Treset.

21.

Monitoring Functions (Event, Disturbance Record):Apart from basic protection functions relay is continuously monitors all Motor operation through
status, its internal functions, internal hardware etc. If any change is observed, it is marked as
event. Such types of events are stored in internal non-volatile memory along with time stamp.

digital status input, Change in Relay settings etc.
Up to 100 such events can be stored and can be downloaded for detail analysis. Apart from Event
record, relay also records actual waveform of current and voltage along with all digital and logical
status during fault condition. Up to 10 such waveforms can be recorded; the duration of
disturbance record is 3 sec. The disturbance record can be trigger from physical status input
as well as from pick-up, trip operation of relay. This waveform can be downloaded through

22.

Programmable DI /DO and LED:

The ADR244A has 10 digital outputs, 2 status dedicated for CBNO (T1) & CBNC (T2) and 8
status programmable opto-isolated input and 8 nos. of dual LEDs out of which 6 are
programmable. These can be programmed by local key board or through communication
