Official Opening of LignoTech South Africa

Expansion
4 July 2003

From the north came the warriors of ice and snow, from the south the warriors of heat and sun. From

the north came the ship builders and seafarers, from the south the hunters and farmers. From the

north came those who raised up longboats and journeyed to foreign lands across treacherous seas,

from the south came those who knew the ancient secrets of nature and the way to bring forth fruit from

the land.

They came together at the dawn of a new age, when the earth was being re-born. They came together

when the old was being made new again, and the world was becoming great and small at the same

time. They came together to share what they knew and what they had, to build a dream - one tribe

with a horn and one with a drum. And they called to the nations, telling them of the wonders they had

wrought. For, in their coming together, they had conjured a great endeavour, bringing wealth to the

people of both lands. And there was great rejoicing.

Welcome to Our World

Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika

The South African National Anthem

Sung in Xhosa, Sotho, English and Afrikaans, the Anthem is a ringing celebration of South Africa’s

democratic transition and a symbol of the healing of a nation. A hymn that became the rallying call of

freedom, it is sung by a volunteer choir and accompanied by the Johannesburg Philharmonic

Orchestra. Joyful voices fill the air with the gentle supplication, Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika - God bless Africa,

God bless our country, from the wide blue of its heavens to the depths of its seas.

The South African National Anthem

Nkosi sikelel' iAfrika,

God bless Africa,

Maluphakanyisw' uphondo lwayo,

Lift her horn on high,

Yizwa imithandazo yethu,

Hear our prayers,

Nkosi sikelela, thina lusapho lwayo.

God bless us all.

Morena boloka setjhaba sa heso,

God bless your nation,

O fedise dintwa la matshwenyeho,

We, who are your people,

O se boloke, O se boloke setjhaba sa heso,

God bless our nation,

Setjhaba sa South Afrika, South Afrika.

Our nation, South Africa.

Uit die blou van onse hemel,

Ringing out from our blue heavens,

Uit die diepte van ons see,

From our deep seas breaking ‘round,

Oor ons ewige gebergtes,

Over everlasting mountains,

Waar die kranse antwoord gee,

Where the echoing crags resound,

Sounds the call to come together,

And united we shall stand,

Let us live and strive for freedom,

In South Africa our land.

Bayete – The Call to Come Together

The ancient Zulu cry goes up - bayete. The call that, for centuries, has gathered the clans of the

Kingdom together. Bayete – come, come together and celebrate.

The Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra

The Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra, known to its friends and patrons simply as “the JPO”, was

established in June 2000 by thirty musicians from the defunct National Symphony Orchestra. it is the

first player-owned orchestra in the country, funded by a rigorous concert schedule and the generosity

of a few South African companies, both large and small.

Based in Gauteng province, the “place of gold”, two of the Orchestra’s most significant projects are its

Performer Development Initiative and the orchestral workshops it holds in conjunction with the South

African Music Education Trust (SAMET) in the former township of Alexandra. The Orchestra is

engaged, in a genuinely meaningful way, in transforming classical music within the African context,

and receives corporate support from Sappi Limited to do so.

Michael Hankinson

The JPO is conducted by UK-born composer, Michael Hankinson, who has also arranged the music

for today’s ceremony. Hankinson was educated at Hereford Cathedral, where he was an organ and

choral scholar. He then went on to study at Trinity College of Music, before coming out to South Africa

in 1970. A veteran of South African music, Michael has worked with most of the country’s orchestras.

His work in creating the orchestral scores and accompaniments for the world’s first Zulu opera,

Princess Magogo has received world-wide acclaim after its international broadcast from the Playhouse

in Durban.

The Choir

The 200-voice choir is made up of volunteers from the Sappi-sponsored Programme for Technological

careers (PROTEC).

Established in 1984, PROTEC is a supplementary career development programme for high school

learners. Its objective is to promote technological education amongst those from disadvantaged

communities, particular in the disciplines of science, engineering and technology studies. With eleven

branches nation-wide, including in Gauteng, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu Natal and the Eastern Cape,

PROTEC is steadily creating a new generation of technical wizards.

More than 1 700 learners have graduated from the programme and are now either studying at tertiary

education institutions or are practising professionals.

Ja, Vi Elsker Dette Landet

The Norwegian National Anthem

Adopted in 1864, the Norwegian National Anthem is a symbol of ancient traditions. Lyrically, it speaks

of the land that defines the Norwegian people and of the vast oceans that they have fared across

throughout the aeons. It speaks of the tales and dreams that come to them in moments of quiet and of

the warrior zeal with which they are prepared to defend their homeland. It is a both a song of

celebration and a poem of belonging.

The Norwegian National Anthem

Ja, vi elsker dette landet,

Yes we love with fond devotion,

som det stiger frem,

This our land that looms,

furet, værbitt, over vannet,

Rugged, storm-scared o'er the ocean,

med de tusen hjem.

With her thousand homes.

Elsker, elsker det og tenker

Love her, in our love recalling

på vår far og mor

og den saganatt som senker,

Those who gave us birth,

drømmer på vår jord

og den saganatt som senker,

And old tales which night, in falling

senker drømmer på vår jord.

Bring as dreams to earth.

Norske mann I hus og hytte,

Norse man, whatsoe'er thy station,

takk din store Gud!

Thank thy God, whose power

Landet ville han beskytte

Willed and wrought the land's salvation

skjønt det mørkt så ut.

In her darkest hour.

Alt hva fedrene har kjempet,

All our mothers sought with weeping

mødrene har grett,

And our sires in fight,

har den Herre stille lempet,

God has fashioned, in his keeping

så vi vant vår rett.

Till we gained our right.

har den Herre stille lempet,

God has fashioned, in his keeping

så vi vant, vi vant vår rett.

‘Til we gained, we gained our right.

Ja, vi elsker dette landet,

og som fedres kamp har hevet

And, as warrior sires have made her

det av nød til seir,

Wealth and fame increase,

også vi, nar det blir krevet,

At the call we too will aid her,

for dets fred slår leir,

Armed to guard her peace.

At the call we too will aid her,

for dets fred, dets fred slår leir!

The Fox, The Hen, The Boer and The Steam Train

A medley of Norwegian and South African folk songs, beginning with the popular Norwegian folk song,

Pål Sine Høner and followed by the bitter-sweet South African melodies, My Sarie Marais and

Shoshaloza.

Pål Sine Høner is a typical folk song of Norwegian farm life three hundred years ago. The tale of a

young boy who lets the fox into his mother’s hen house and has to make amends, it is a story of

drama, redemption and, finally, joy.

My Sarie Marais is a cry of longing penned by a Boer soldier during the Anglo-Boer War for the love he

had to leave behind when he went “on commando”. The title of Shoshaloza, on the other hand,

represents the hissing sound of a steam train on a track, and was a working song sung by railway

labourers during the struggle years. Since democracy, it has become the rallying call of South African

sports fans and is sung proudly by all.

Mr Finn Jebsen, President and Chief Executive Officer of Orkla

Mr Finn Jebsen, BBA and MBA (UCLA), is the President and Group Chief Executive Officer of Orkla,

He is also the Chairman of the Norwegian industrial company, Elkem.

A Bright New Dawn, A Brave New World

The orchestra plays Morning from the Peer Gynt Suite by Edvard Grieg. Grieg (1858 - 1907) is

arguably Norway’s most famous composer and his music is recognised all over the world. A young

protégé, he entered the Leipzig Conservatory at the tender age of 15 to study music and, by the age of

19, was a fully-fledged orchestral musician and composer.

Grieg was strongly influenced by folk songs such as Pål Sine Høner, which he researched in their

native environments. Peer Gynt is one of his most well-known works, and certainly the most important

of the 1870’s. In it, he paints a lyrical picture of the people, scenery and moods of Norway.

Morning has been arranged for the ceremony in a fusion style which joins together the spirit of the

original with the soul of African rhythm.
