SUBJECT

: SIDRA MEDICAL & RESEARCH CENTRE HOSPITAL BUILDING

: Space requirements for the Proposed Manifold & Plant Rooms

Dear Sir,
We are submitting herewith the plant room estimation for the above project. We will
require the following space allocated:
Hospital Building / Supply Equipment:
Plant Room
Manifold Room

- 21metres x 14 metres
- 8 metres x 7.5 metres

Clinic Building
Plant Room
Manifold Room

- 14.5 metres x 11.5 metres

- 4.5 metres x 1.5 metres

As per HTM02-01 requirements, the flow rates that Medaes is currently working to
are as follows:
Hospital Building

Clinic Building

O2
N2O
MA4
VAC

O2
- 991 l/min
N2O
- 166 l/min
- 1269 l/min
- 1070 l/min

- 4562 l/min
- 823 l/min
- 10055 l/min
- 7400 l/min

MA4
VAC

Medaes have outlined the space requirements for the proposed manifold rooms and
plant rooms for each building, at this time Medaes have not included any of the
laboratory air or vacuum systems and these would need to be separate systems
from the medical supply.
The manifold room housing the cylinders, must be separate from the plant room
housing the air and vacuum plants. The manifold room also requires ventilation at

high and low level so must be located on an external wall, the manifold room also
requires access to the outside and not via corridors or other rooms. It should also be
remembered that lorry access will be required for the delivery of the gas cylinders,
and consideration should also be given for the provision of a raised level loading bay
to reduce cylinder handling hazards.
Two doors should preferably be provided in a manifold room, one should be large
enough to facilitate cylinder handling and must be in an outside wall. Exists must be
free from all obstructions and doors must open outwards. All doors must normally be
locked to prevent unauthorized access but should be provided with means of entry
and exit in an emergency (for example by a push bar arrangement on the inside).
Internal walls and ceiling including any integral doors of the manifold room, should
be of a suitable non-combustable two hour fire retardant material as defined to BS
476-4:1970 and BS470 Parts 20-23(1987). Internal doors should be avoided where
practicable. Smoke detectors should be provided. Automatic fire suppression should
be considered. Manifold rooms should not be located near high dependency wards.
The manifold room also needs to contain sufficient spare cylinders to replace one
bank of each manifold and the emergency manifold. Adequate space also needs to
be considered for the handling of the cylinders.
For the plant room, ideally this too should have generous natural ventilation where
possible, something Medaes would particularly recommend on this project given the
large plant sizes we will be using, since the plant will liberate considerable heat
particularly under maximum flow conditions. If this is not possible, such as the plant
room being situated in the basement then adequate mechanical ventilation should
be provided, however Medaes would strongly recommend the plant room have
external ventilation. The ambient temperature of the plant room and manifold room
should be maintained within the range 10-40 oC. The ventilation rates should ensure
that the plant room temperature does not exceed ambient temperature by more
than 10O0C.
The manifold and / or plant room to be situated within the services building which is
connected to the main building(s) via a tunnel is possible, however Medaes would
need to know the location of the services building in relation to both the hospital and
clinic building in order to allow for the pressure drops.
On the AGSS systems, under the new HTM02-01 requirements, Medaes normally
install 1 AGSS unit in each operating theatre; this is dependent on the air handling
units used in the operating theatres.
Trust the above is clear.
