10. Implementation Strategy (including justification/identification of needs, modalities
of action and target groups):
During 2010-2011, the Office of Lima organized, jointly with the National Library of
Peru, a workshop to promote the Memory of the World Programme of UNESCO by
national and regional authorities as well as officials in charge of the preservation of
documentary heritage in public or private institutions.
Based on the recommendations of the workshop, the Peruvian government decided to
establish the National Committee of the Memory of the World. This Committee is
composed of one representative from the National Library of Peru (as Chairman), a
representative of the National Archive, a representative of the Ministry of Culture, and
members of civil society and academia.
This National Committee got to register two documents in the Latin American Registry
during their first year in office. These documents are Protocolo Ambulante de los
Conquistadores (Travelling Registry of the Conquistadors) also known as the Libro
Becerro, and Primeras Ediciones Peruanas y Sudamericanas (1584 - 1619), better
known as the Incunables Peruanos (Peruvian Incunables).
In 2012, the MoW LAC session was carried out in Peru. This event reinforced the
National Committee actions and promoted to increase awareness of significance and
role of documentary heritage. The Congress expressed its concern on the importance of
the preservation of this heritage.

The National Committee indicated that there have been thefts of books and historic
documents in different institutions, such as museums, libraries, churches and others. The
State does not have an inventory of the documentary heritage. ICTs offer a number of
tools to conduct inventories of documents fast and securely way by promoting access to
information from these documents without compromising its preservation.
We propose to implement the UNESCO Records management manual for National
Committee and specialists on the use of ICT for inventory of documentary heritage.
Additionally, we will design a data base for this inventory and the National Committee
will maintain it updated.
The target group is the National Committee of the Memory of the World members and
specialists on preservation of documentary heritage.
11. Expected results of this activity:
Expected Result N1: National Committee of the Memory of the Worlds members
strengthened their capacities on the use of ICTs in preservation of documentary heritage
and have initiated an inventory and register.
