LEARNING OUTCOMES:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of teaching listening and

2. Interpret the syllabus and select listening and speaking skills (1.3)
3. Select, create and evaluate materials for developing listening and speaking skills
(2.1, 6.1)
4. Plan and teach lessons to develop listening and speaking skills (2.2, 4.5)
5. Use appropriate types of assessment/feedback in the teaching of listening and
speaking to children (2.4)
6. Give feedback on microteaching (4.1, 7.2)

This coursework will evaluate the learning outcomes 1,2,3,4,5 and 6.

COURSEWORK OBJECTIVES:
To enable students to:
1.

read critically and select appropriate information from various sources on


the teaching and assessing of listening and speaking skills in the primary
ESL classroom;

2.

use computer skills to design an appropriate graphic organiser to present


information;

3.

select a topic in the KSSR/KBSR English Language Syllabus;

4.

select and adapt suitable instructional materials for teaching and learning
of listening and speaking skills;

5.

write lesson plans according to the curriculum specifications of the English


Language primary school syllabus;

6.

conduct a lesson on teaching of listening and speaking skills with appropriate


skills, strategies and techniques.

7.

observe and assess macro/micro teaching sessions and provide constructive


feedback based on the criteria given.

8.

reflect critically on the process of the coursework; and

9.

collaborate effectively with peers.

STIMULUS
Listening and speaking are difficult skills to teach. Effective teaching of listening and
speaking will enable teachers to encourage students to think critically and creatively.
Thus, a teacher must always try to find ways and strategies to make his or her
lesson interesting. This will motivate the students and build their confidence in
learning these two skills.

ASSIGNMENT:
PROJECT (100 marks)
This project assesses your ability to complete the three tasks below.
TASK 1 (Materials Selection - 20%) Groupwork
In groups of 3/4, choose 6 authentic listening and speaking materials and
justify your choice in about 200 words.
Your justification may include purpose of choosing the text, suitability,
students level, interests, ability and learning styles, time allotted, flexibility
and others.
TASK 2 (Lesson plan, teaching / learning resources 30%)- Individual
Select a topic in the KSSR/KBSR English Language Curriculum
Specifications.
Based on the topic, prepare a 30-minutes lesson and the relevant teaching
/ learning resources for the lesson for a mixed ability class to teach
listening and speaking skills with integration of other language skills,
content, grammar and educational emphases.
*Note : You will be assessed individually on lesson plan and your teaching.
TASK 3 (Lesson implementation and critical reflection 50%) Individual
Execute and record your lesson plan. (30%).
Write a critical reflection of your lesson in not more than 500 to1000
words. (20%)
GENERAL INFORMATION
Detailed requirements for the assignment
1. This coursework requires you to work individually and collaboratively. Each
group should comprise 3/4 students only.
2. You are advised to discuss your work regularly with your supervisor to ensure
targets are met.
3. Your supervisors signatures are required on the collaborative forms.

4. Plagiarism in any form will not be tolerated. References must be


acknowledged (APA System) in articles selected. All borrowed ideas must
have proper citations.
5. Please adhere to the deadlines of each stage. Late submission will be
penalised.
6. Assignments submission to the lecturers must be in the forms of both hard
and soft copy (CD).
7. Your work should be type written with 1.5 spacing and font Arial size 11.
8. The cover page should have the following information:

Name
Index number and ID
Class / group
Title of task
Lecturers name
A passport sized photograph of yourself and your personal
information must be presented on the cover page of the assignment.

9. A good assignment should show:

deep understanding of the principles of lesson planning


evidence of reading from a variety of sources.
critical reflection
sound justification
originality in the argument and presentation
effective expression and appropriate language usage
