THE GOOD & BAD VISION & MISSION


A vision statement takes into account the current status of the organization, and serves to point the direction of where
the organization wishes to go. As a means of setting a central goal that the organization will aspire to reach, the vision
statement helps to provide a focus for the mission of the corporation/business.
A mission statement is a formal short written statement of the purpose of a company or organization. The mission
statement should guide the actions of the organization, spell out its overall goal, provide a sense of directions, and
guide decision-making. It provides the framework or context within which the companys strategies are formulated.
Following here are examples of good and bad vision and mission of a company, also with assessment tables based on
Manajemen Kinerja written by Prof. Dermawan Wibisono.

Criteria of Good Vision


Is a single sentence
Inspiring comfort employees working in organization
Write down in good language without zero meaning words
Easy to be understood with all employees
Focus in one or two aspects of works only. Not too many.
The level of reaching can be tested
Developed by CEO or leader, not by committee
The validity is reviewed every one year
Realistic, stating current corporate position and resource limitation
Can be changed, so not must carved in stone monument
Can be memorized by employees without seeing material or brosur

Define what organization do and, moreover, not do
Define ability and key competence
Pusing organization to make better choice, that involving future chances
Define products or services without being too
Not longer than one paragraph
Can be clearly understood by employees
Write down in good and right sentence without including zero meaning words
Focus in current condition and not mix/join with future vision statement
Reviewed and write again if organization scope being changed
Specific for affecting personal behavior in company
Reflecting corporate competitive advantage also based on the recognition of company strength
and weakness
Realistic and can be reached
Flexible enough so that can respond to environmental change
Refers to competitive advantage
Includes some logical statement and values behind that statements, for rising spirits and
facillitate internal and external organizational communication
