Prof G N S Prasanna, presented paper titled The Relational Algebra of Constraint Sets in Robust Optimization on 2010 INFORMS Annual Meeting in
Austin, Texas, between Nov 7-10, 2010.

Dr Poonacha, PhD (IIT, Kanpur) who earlier taught at IIT-Bombay and


worked in Sasken, has joined IIIT-B as visiting faculty on November 8, 2010.

IIIT-B bid-farewell to Prof Irith Hartman, Visiting Professor, after her 1 year
stint at IIIT-B.

Govt. of India has nominated Prof S Sadagopan as an Independent Director


on the Board of BEML Ltd., A Govt. of India Mini Ratna PSU under Ministry of
Defence for 3 years from Nov 12, 2010.

Prof S Sadagopan, met former President Dr APJ Adbul Kalam regarding WWW
2011 conference on 24th Nov 2010.

Prof Debabrata Das, attended 2010 Asia Academic Forum (AAF), from 10th to
12th Nov 2010, at Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, by invitation from Intel. He presented a poster on Next Generation Scalable Wireless Infrastructure and
Services for Successful Broadband Penetration in Emerging Market at AAF.

Prof Balaji Parthasarathy submitted a proposal The challenge of globalization: Technology driven foreign direct investment (TFDI) and its implications
for the negotiation of International (bi- and multilateral) Investment Agreements as part of a team of European, Chinese and Brazilian scholars to a
consortium of German, Italian and Swedish funding agencies. The proposal
was one of 16 shortlisted (out of 180) for a second review by an academic
committee. Balaji was invited by the Volkswagen Stiftung to Hannover, Germany, to make a presentation on behalf of the team on 2nd November.
Based on the presentation, the proposal was one of 6 that has been
granted funding. The research will begin in early 2011 and will go on for 2
years.

8, 2010 in Bangalore. We wish them both many years of happy, healthy and

Abhilasha Aswal (2009901) got married to Rajat Upadhyay (Class of 2009)


on November 22, 2010. We wish them both many years of happy, healthy
and prosperous wedded life.

Ravi Shukla (Class of 2007) getting married to Vandana Dubey on December


1, 2010 in Hyderabad. We wish them both many years of happy, healthy and
prosperous wedded life.

ELITE 6

ELITE 6 Programme Inaugurated

ELITE 6 started on November 8th, 2010 inaugurated by Prof. S Sadagopan, Prof.


S Rajgopalan and Prof. Debabrata Das were present along with Mr. Murugan.
"ELITE" is a unique opportunity for professors and lecturers in the IT area at select universities to gain valuable expertise in leveraging technology to enhance
the effectiveness of teaching in classrooms, and even beyond the confines of the
classroom. In its series we have now started ELITE 6 on 8th November, 2010 with
first Face to Face sessions and ends in March 2011. During the 14 week period in
-between the two Face to Face sessions, participants were expected to spend
about 5 hours each week for self-learning (through online technology-enabled,
interactive learning system that was made available to them by IIITB). A total of
44 participants are attending the course and 12 courses they are designing using
state of the art instructional design and pedagogic methods.

RedMed System Launch


RedMed Systems had its launch event on Friday, November 19, on IIITB campus
in Room 309 at the Incubation Center. The event was addressed by Prof. S Sadagopan, founder and director of the Institute, and attended by over 30 people.
RedMed's beta launch of the website showcased the various features and functionality. It intends to use the limited release to secure feedback for a formal release in January 2011.
About RedMed Systems
RedMed Systems is a "Health 2.0" venture being incubated at IIIT-B and
dedicated to promoting consumer-centric care and helping consumers live
healthy lives. It proposes to do this by providing a suite of modular applications on its asQmed platform for end-consumers of healthcare to

RedMed Systems was founded by Jay Srinivasan and incorporated in September 2009. Jay has over 18 years' experience in the healthcare industry,
mostly in North America where he had a variety of roles spanning provider contracts, supply chain and e-procurement consulting, and clinical trials. In India
since 2005, he has been director of strategic planning at Sankara Nethralaya, a
specialty ophthalmic hospital in Chennai, and chief operating officer at a healthcare BPO in Bangalore.

SCM Lecture Series


Professor A Ravindran, Professor of Industrial Engineering and Chair, Enterprise
Integration Consortium at Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) in the
United States gave a series of talks on Supply Chain during November 10-16,
2010 at IIITB.
The topics covered were:
Nov 10 - SCM overview covering Definition of supply chain (SC); SC flows, Examples of supply chains, Importance of SCM; SC decisions; SC design; SC drivers; impact of globalization; top 20 supply chains.
Nov 11 - Risk pooling and inventory aggregation in supply chains covering
Principles and benefits of risk pooling in SC; optimization models for risk pooling;
illustrative examples.
Nov 12 - Managing risks in supply chain covering Basic concepts of SC risks;
real world risk events and their impacts; sources of SC risks; risk identification,
risk classification and risk mitigation strategies; best risk management practices
in companies.
Nov 15 - Global sourcing and vendor management covering Trends in globalization and outsourcing; global sourcing-costs and benefits; vendor management
-cost versus risk; supply risk management
Nov 16 - Case studies in supply chain design network and multiple criteria approach to supplier selection covering 1)Design of a SC distribution network for a multinational consumer products company; optimization models, solutions and managerial implications. And 2) Use of multi criteria models and methods for supplier selection and order allocation; illustration with a real life example
for a global IT company.

The talks were attended by IIITB faculty, research scholars, students as


well as students from other institutes in E city (XIME, Symbiosis, Welingkar,
IFIM) and industry professionals from TVS group, SAP, Patni, Wipro, Infosys and
Siemens.

NIXI Workshop
IIIT-B conducted a National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) workshop on 28th
Nov 2010. The Department of Information Technology, Government of India, in
the year 2003 set up a not for profit section 25 company named The National
Internet Exchange of India (NIXI). NIXI is the neutral meeting point of the ISPs
in India. Its main purpose is to facilitate exchange of domestic Internet traffic
between the peering ISP members. This enables more efficient use of international bandwidth, saving foreign exchange. It also improves the Quality of Services for the customers of member ISPs, by avoiding multiple international hops
and thus reducing latency.

Prof Rolf Pfeifer (University of Zurich, Switzerland), presented a talk titled


Soft Robotics: Self-Organization, embodiment, and biological inspiration on
26th Nov 2010.

Events

IIIT-B celebrated Deepavali on Nov 4, 2010 with students, faculty and staff
members.

IIIT-B signed an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with AsiaeUniversity


(AeU), Kaula Lumpur, Malaysia to launch employability enhancement programmes in the Asia region on Nov 19, 2010.

IIIT-B signed an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Alliance


4 University (A-4U) of Spain and The Universidad Carlos III de Madrid
(UC3M) on Nov 24, 2010.

Internship
Internship selection for the 2009-11 batch of students was held in IIIT-B campus
spanning over two weeks in early November. Totally, 24 firms participated in the
selection process, ranging from Research Labs of MNCs, R&D companies, finance/
banking firms, and start-ups. This year, about 20 students are doing their thesis
with the professors of the institute under funded projects or collaboration with
companies. The process is almost complete with all but one student either being
placed for internship or opting to do thesis.
