Composite neoprene/steel bridge deck

expansion joint
Uses

Fosflex A7 neoprene/steel bridge joint:

The Fosflex A7 bridge deck expansion joint is designed to

seal movement joints including skew joints in:

Fosflex A7

Bridge decks, elevated roads and walkways.

Podium areas
Multi-Storey car parks
Surface joints subject to traffic
Advantages
Movement accommodation up to 50 mm.
Standard unit accommodates skew movement up to
30 without modification.
Each module totally enclosed in neoprene rubber to
resist corrosive action.
Impact loads cushioned by the elastomer and not
transmitted directly to anchor points.
Flexible central seal imposed very low load to the
structure.
Smooth ride quality over joint.
Description
Fosflex A7 bridge deck expansion joint has been designed
to accommodate movement up to a total of 50mm. It
comprises two steel angles enclosed in neoprene rubber
and a flexible neoprene rubber membrane which bridges
the expansion joint in the deck.
Fosflex A7 is supplied in modules of 1.83 meters and is
designed to be bolted to the concrete on either side of the
expansion joint in the deck using chemical fixing anchors.
Movement up to 50mm is accommodated by the flexing of
the tough central neoprene membrane. It can be applied
to skew angles of up to 30 without excessive distortion of
the flexible seal for the full movement range. For skew
angles greater than 30 reference should be mad to
Fosroc Limited, giving full details of the expected
movement.
The anchor bolts are protected from traffic impact load by
the elastomer and embody chemical fixing anchors. The
flexible central seal limits the forces imparted to the
structure.
Fosflex A7 bridge expansion joint system can be installed
in new decks or in remedial applications where it provides
a virtually maintenance-free installation together with a
good ride and a low noise level. Cover plates can be
provided for pedestrian areas.

Accommodating level changes

Application Instructions

The standard A7 bridge deck expansion joint unit is

capable of accommodating changes in level at kerbs and
upstands by cutting and notching the steel angles and
forming the unit to the required level change.

It is required of the contractor that an integral haunch or

recess should be formed to accept Fosflex A7 bridge deck
expansion joint and the transition strips. Care should be
taken to ensure that the dimension between the top of the
wearing course corresponds to the dimension 'F'
depression depth given under the heading 'Technical
Date'. Care should be taken at this stage to ensure that
the reinforcement adjacent to the edge of each structural
slab does not coincide with the anchor points of the A7
bridge deck expansion joint.

Where changes occur at footways, the void formed in the

kerb lines should be covered by a galvanised steel siding
kerb cover.
The exposed voids in the fabricated unit at the point of
bend should be filled with Nitoseal MS600, thereby
protecting the exposed steelwork from corrosion and
reforming the unit as a composite module.

A hardboard bond breaker should be placed over the

haunch with a width slightly less than the combined widths
of the A7 bridge deck expansion joint and transition strips.

The well established procedure using a standard module

to cater for changes in level, easily accommodates site
tolerances. The versatility of this method allows, if
required, for supplementary fixing holes to be drilled, the
hole recess subsequently being filled with Nitoseal MS600
to protect the steel and stud from corrosion.

The finished surface may then be continuously machine

laid over the joint. At the time of joint installation the gap to
accommodate the A7 bridge deck expansion joint should
be sawn to a width suitably determined by considering the
ambient deck temperature and its relation to movement
(see separate example graph under the heading
'Temperature Adjustment Guide', and the asphalt and
bond breaker removed. The exposed surface should be
scabbled and the final level to be adjusted using Fosroc's
Nitomortar B.

Example of a standard A7 bridge deck expansion joint unit

formed to accommodate change in level by notching and
bending steelwork is shown below:

The centre line of the joint should be established and set

out and point holes drilled using the A7 bridge deck
expansion joint unit (suitably adjusted, ie compressed or
extended to suit temperature consideration) as a template.
The final holes should be drilled using a rotary percussion
drill and steel studs inserted using Fosroc's Conbextra
EP150.
Following the setting of Conbextra EP150 anchoring
system, the unit should be laid into position on to beads of
sealant plain washers and spring washers located and the
assembly bolted down.
The second and subsequent modules may then be fixed in
a similar manner, the sealant first being applied to the
tongue and groove edges of each unit. The fixing nuts
should each be torqued to the specified rate indicated
under the heading 'Technical Data'. When all the modules
are in position, a 3 mm thick hardboard strip should be
attached to the top of the A7 bridge deck expansion joint
unit and BJ Transition strip epoxy resin mortar placed
between the road surfacing and the a& bridge deck
expansion joint unit to act as a transition strip which
protects the wearing course and the edges of the a&
bridge deck expansion joint. The temporary fixing of the
hardboard sheet allows the transition strip to be finished
slightly higher than the finished level of the joint. The bolt
hold should be filled with Nitoseal MS600.

by notching and bending steelwork in skew joint is shown
below:
