Student Teacher: Caitlin Kamienski

Grade Level: 2
Lesson Date: September 2015
Name of Lesson: Word Problems
Common Core State Standard(s)
Mp1- Make sense of problems and preserve in solving them
Student Learning Objective(s)
What is the intended learning outcome of this lesson? Be sure it is observable and includes clear
criteria.
Consider if there are students who will require an accommodation or modification to meet this
lessons objective.
Students will be able to successfully solve word problems and have better
understanding of math language.

Rationale for Objective: How does this lesson support previous and subsequent learning?
Students will enhance their already acquired knowledge of math language
and apply it to word problems.

Assessment
State the specific strategy (ies) and tool(s) used to collect the data for each SLO (i.e., essays,
projects, quizzes, exit slip, worksheet, etc.). Are there students who will require an
accommodation or modification to this lessons assessment?
Each student will hand in work at the end of class to be graded. Students will
also be randomly selected to share work on smart board.

Classroom Learning Environment Focus

(i.e., standards of behavior, routines, procedures, group work, transitions, instructional
arrangement, etc.). Explain specific needs.
Instructional arrangement with transition into independent work. A few students
will be selected to share their work on smart board.

Instructional Model/Strategy
(i.e., concept formation, concept development, direct instruction, cooperative learning, inquiry,
discussion model). Explain how you will best facilitate student learning through a specific
model of instruction. Be sure to include a rationale for the chosen model(s). You may use more
than one:
Concept development- Students will continue to develop understanding of math
language.

Materials/Resources needed for this lesson

Daily Formative Assessment

How will you check for understanding and student achievement during the lesson?
Will ask students to make their own word problem by the end of lesson.
Will continuously circulate around room to make sure students are following
instruction and decide if modifications are needed

Differentiating Instruction
How will you differentiate to meet the needs of your learners (i.e., what you teach, how you
teach, or how you will assess). Explain:
-

I will conduct an example problem for students who are visual learners
I will pace the lesson at a speed to suite for all of my students

Initiation
Cite how you will engage and motivate learners, activate prior learning and present the lessons
objective.
Explain: A) What they will be doing and learning in the lesson; B) How they will demonstrate
learning;
C) Why it is important to their everyday lives.
In order to engage and motivate my students I will use a sample problem with a
few of the students names. This will show how we can use word problems daily.

Lesson Development
Cite how you will provide opportunities for the students to construct meaning. List the
steps/process you will follow. Be sure to identify how you will check for understanding
and collect formative data. Differentiate for students who will require an accommodation
or modification in order to be active participants in this lesson and state these strategies in
the differentiation section above.
-

Students will be given time to ask questions

Pair Share
I will use observation to check for understanding

Closure
How will you question students in order to evaluate if the objective(s) was met? How will you
question students to connect this lesson to previous and subsequent lessons as well as connect
to their own lives? How will you question students to see the relevancy of the lesson by
understanding the purpose/importance of the learning?
In closing I will have each student create their own word problem for a
partner
I will also review with students the steps to solving a word problem.
