QUESTION NO. 6
Two identical three-phase, Y-connected, synchronous generators are connected in parallel to
equally share a load of 900 kW at 11 kV and 0.8 p.f. lagging. The synchronous impedance of
each generator is (0.5 + j10) / phase. The field current of one generator (Gen. A) is adjusted so
that its armature current is 25 A at a lagging power factor. Determine:
i.

The power factor of Gen. A. ANS: Cos Gen A = 0.9448 lagging

ii.

The armature current of the other generator (Gen. B). ANS: IAGen B = 36.05/-49.07 A

iii.

The power factor of Gen. B. ANS: Cos Gen B = 0.6551lagging

iv.

The per-phase generated voltage of each generator, ANS: EGGen A = 6448.77/2.060 V; EGGen B
= 6638.75/1.920 V.

v.
vi.

The power angle of each generator. ANS: A = 2.060 B = 1.920

The circulating current if the load is suddenly disconnected. ANS: IS/C = 9.52/-89.920 A

Notes on solution for Question 6:

PLoad = 3VL * ILoad * Cos Load ; ( Find ILoad in magnitude and phase angle)
PoGen A + PoGen B = PLoad
If both generators share the load equally, what is the load in kW carried by each generator?
PoGen A = 3VL * IAGen A * Cos Gen A

QUESTION NO. 7
A 10-hp, 230 V, 4-pole, 60 Hz, three-phase, Y-connected, synchronous motor delivers full load at
a power factor of 0.707 leading. The synchronous reactance of the motor is j5 / phase. The
armature-winding resistance is negligible. The rotational loss is 230 W and the field-winding loss
is 70 W. Calculate the following:
i.

The efficiency of the motor.

ii.

The generated voltage.

iii.

The torque developed

QUESTION NO. 8
A 5 hp, 440 V, 60 Hz, 4 pole, star connected, three phase induction motor has the following
parameters on a per phase basis: R1 = 1.5 , X1 = 4 , R2 = 1.2 , X2 = 2 , Rc = 900 , and
Xm = 110 . Rated power is delivered at a slip, s = 0.026. Assume that friction and windage loss
is negligible.
The induction motor is loaded at rated shaft torque by a bidirectional constant torque load. If the
load torque is now reversed and the machine begins to operate in the regenerative braking mode
at rated slip, calculate the following:
i.

The motor speed in rads/s. ANS: m = 193.396 rads/s.

ii.

The power developed. ANS: Pd = -3929.042 W

iii.

The winding (copper) loss ANS: Pwinding loss = 229.85 W

iv.

The power delivered to the electrical supply. ANS: Po = -3484.082 W

Use the approximate equivalent circuit.
