We’re very excited to be able to bring you another
Shufflegazine reading experience, in the form of an
iPhone app. (www.shufflegazine.com/iphone-app) It’s
only $0.99 to buy, and with it you can purchase individual
issues or subscribe for six months or a year. Only
second to the print issue, it’s the best way to enjoy our
unique content every month. Yes, the iPhone’s screen
is perhaps a bit too small to easily read through a whole
issue, but I already find that for reading an article or two
it’s great, and we expect a great reading experience
on the iPad. I was probably one of the first customers
when I bought all available issues and subscribed
for a year so I can get all issues on my iPhone. Sure,
I’m biased, but I really like it and I’d like to thank our
partner Pixel Mags. Without them doing a great job with
developing the app I wouldn’t be writing this. Making
our magazine available on iPhone is just one more step
we take toward being completely digital. From before
we started Shufflegazine in 2008, we said that we’d
be all digital one day. Personally, I think that print has a
considerable future in the Middle East and we certainly
plan to print Shufflegazine for many years yet. I like
having a paper copy of a magazine over having a digital
copy, but devices for reading magazines, books and
newspapers in digital format are getting better by the
day. Just look at CES in Las Vegas in January, where
there were ebook readers everywhere, and some of them
really innovative. And by the time this issue is out Apple

may have launched a tablet, and if we can believe the
rumors, they’ve made deals with many content-providers
so you’ll be able to enjoy your morning newspaper and
favorite magazine on the tablet. Let’s just hope that if you
have to get that content through the iTunes store, that
the stores we have in the Middle East will be expanded
beyond App Stores. Otherwise we’re, yet again, in for a
big disappointment.

‫‪iPad‬‬
‫‪When Steve Jobs took to the stage on January 27, he‬‬
‫‪introduced the Apple tablet called iPad. Trying a fill a void‬‬
‫‪in the Apple lineup, iPad is in many ways an upscaled‬‬
‫‪iPod touch or iPhone. It’s basically just screen (9.7‬‬
‫‪inches, 1,024 x 768 pixels) on one side with the same‬‬
‫‪home button of the iPhone. On the other side it is the‬‬
‫‪same brushed aluminum as Apple’s MacBook Pro series‬‬
‫‪of notebooks. The iPad is about 1.3 cm thin and weighs‬‬
‫‪about 0.7 kg.‬‬
‫‪It runs a 1GHz “Apple A4” chip, developed, at least‬‬
‫‪partly, in-house at Apple. Further in hardware specs the‬‬
‫‪iPad has Bluetooth 2.1+EDS, 802.11n Wi-Fi and 10‬‬
‫‪hours of battery life with one month standby power. It‬‬
‫‪syncs over USB just like iPhone and iPod. Scott Forstall,‬‬
‫‪Senior Vice President of iPhone software at Apple,‬‬
‫‪announced that the iPad runs iPhone OS 3.2 and that‬‬
‫‪it can run almost all iPhone apps unmodified out of the‬‬
‫‪box. One new application on the iPad is the iBooks store.‬‬
‫‪Apple has struck deals with some major publishers like‬‬
‫‪Penguin, Harper Collins, Simon & Schuster, Macmillan‬‬
‫‪and Hachette book group. You can buy books directly‬‬
‫‪from the iPad, they’re downloaded to the device and you‬‬
‫‪can read them very much like many other iPhone apps,‬‬
‫‪including our very own Shufflegazine iPhone app.‬‬
‫‪Pricing for the iPad starts at $499 for the 16 GB model,‬‬
‫‪with 32 GB at $599 and 64 GB at $699. Those are all the‬‬
‫‪Wi-Fi models. Models with 3G cost $130 more: $629,‬‬
‫‪$729 and $829. The iPad will be available in 60 days, the‬‬
‫‪3G models in 90 days, with international release in June-‬‬
‫‪July. Jobs said the 3G model is unlocked so as soon as‬‬
‫‪they come out in the US, presumably we could get an‬‬
‫‪iPad and use it here in the Middle East.‬‬

Technology invests
heavily in Apple tech-
nology
In December, Shufflegazine visited the Dubai campus of
IAT, Institute of Applied Technology. Founded in 2005,
IAT now serves around 3,000 Emirati students across
five campuses. In an interview for the Tech Chat podcast
(show #4, shuffle.to/techchat), Dr. Abdullatif Alshamsi,
the Director General of IAT, talks about IAT and the
One-to-One eLearning project, which puts 3,000 13-
inch MacBook Pros into the hands of students, faculty
and management in all IAT campuses. In July 2009,
IAT signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Arab
Business Machine, Apple's distributor in the Middle East,
and Intel. The first evaluation of the project will take place
in the first quarter of 2010 and we will return to IAT at
that time to report on the findings.

Etisalat explained delay of iPhone 3GS plans

Shufflegazine asked Etisalat about the delays in
introducing iPhone 3GS plans. Etisalat started selling
iPhone 3GS on October 27, 2009, but it wasn’t until
December that the actual plans were introduced.
Etisalat said “Finalising pricing plans involves market
research, designing attractive plans and obtaining the
TRA approval to enable us to introduce them to our
customers. While Etisalat undertakes research and
designs plans that suit customer needs, the final and
essential stage of this process involves the TRA approval
which essentially determines the timing of the launch of

Gulf Photo Plus returns in 2010

The annual Gulf Photo Plus (GPP) has been
announced for 2010. Running March 1-6,

LAP57 successfully
completes Dubai 24hr
race
At 2pm on Saturday January 16, the Al Qasba LAP57
team, sponsored by Shufflegazine, passed the finishing
line in Dubai’s 24hr race, coming in on position 7 out
of 8 in their class. Despite having to change gearboxes
twice during the race, they made it to the finishing line,
representing a considerable feat for the young team.
Mohammed Al-Owais, Omran Al-Owais
(Editor in Chief of Shufflegazine and
owner of CENTIMETERCUBE Publishing),
Umair Khan and Saeed Al Mehairi drove
their Honda Civic Type R for a total of 341
laps. The team managed to score the
best lap time in their class at 2:23.452
minutes, which represents a speed of
135.26 kph. We say congratulations to
the team. They may not have won, but
they put in a considerable effort and
came out of the race with flying colors.

Google Nexus One
Available online from www.google.com/phone, but only
for delivery in the US, Google’s smart phone has finally
seen the light of day. Called the Nexus One, it runs the
1GHz Snapdragon by Qualcomm and it comes with
Android version 2.1. Other than the processor, the
hardware specifications are not that impressive: 3.7-inch
display (800 x 480 pixels), 5-megapixel camera with
LED flash, 720 x 480 pixel video recording, 512MB
memory (expandable by Micro SD card), Wi-Fi and
Bluetooth. Receiving some very good reviews after its
release, the Google Nexus One has also been criticized,
mainly for poor customer service by Google and flaky
3G connectivity. Google has made no announcements
about if or when the Nexus One will be sold outside the
US. The aspect that may be most significant about the
launch of Nexus One is that Google sells it in the US
without a contract, something that is very uncommon
there. Google sells the Nexus one without a contract for
$530 or $180 with a two-year contract with T-Mobile.

My apple world

My apple world has been pretty white during the last
month, white from snow that is. Spending a few weeks
with family in Sweden over the holidays was nice, for many
reasons. Getting out of Dubai's hectic life is not a bad
thing once in a while, but also getting away to see how the
situation is with regards to Apple fans in other countries is
always good. In the town I grew up in there has been for a
few years now a very good Apple shop called MacSupport.
Yes, English is making inroads in Sweden too. In
appearance it's not that different from the iStyles and other
shops we're used to, but in attitude of the staff there's a
huge difference. It's funny, but Swedes are not well-known
for being the most outgoing and service-oriented people
in the world, but in this shop they had some of the most
Apple-loving and friendly people around. Perhaps they were
just lucky in recruiting them, but I think it's more than that.
The three sales people we met in the store were all chatty
about Apple's latest and upcoming products and wanted
to know everything about our magazine and what it was
like in Dubai. You could tell that they loved the stuff they're
selling and knew just about everything there is to know
about it. In short, they were just as crazy fans as we are,
just like the staff is in Apple stores in the US. At least in my
mind, that makes all the difference in the world. We didn't
buy anything there though because prices are pretty high;
in Sweden there's a 25% tax on all sales of goods and
services. So prices may be high, but service is great and
that can actually make all the difference, and that's a lesson
I take with me from a snow-covered Sweden.

about my dream computer, the Mac;
and it is published from Dubai. The
first time I got your small magazine
was when I was in Dubai during
GITEX. If I could just let all the fans
know about this magazine, so we
could together turn something small

January 2010 issue in a bookstore
here in my city of Salalah, Oman.

Bad luck with hard
drives
I've recently had really bad luck with
hard drives. They are all of the same
brand, but that's not important.
First, the internal hard drive in my
MacBook Pro died and I had it
replaced. Then an external hard
drive I've had for a few years started
acting up with files disappearing,
other files corrupted, so I backed up
what I could and stopped using it.
I've seen a few hard drive reviews in
the magazine but you say nothing
about reliability and what the overall
quality is of a drive. That's something
I think you should include in your
tests. -MR

It's something we would like to
offer our readers and we do have
some plans for the future. There are
complications though because such
tests obviously takes a long time and
requires some special instruments.
To be honest, it will be a while before
we can offer such a service. Rest
assured, we want to do that sort of
testing and we're working on getting

Q: Is it possible to get PS2
games on Mac?
A: If you mean if you can play PS2
games on a Mac, the simple answer
is no. At least not in Mac OS X. I
seem to remember there was a
project some years ago creating a
PS2 emulator for Mac OS X, but
now it seems their site is no longer
available. However, there are some
PS2 emulators for Windows, so you
could run Windows in Boot Camp
on your Mac and enjoy your PS2
games that way. But my personal
recommendation would be to not
bother with that, and just find a used
PS2 instead and play the games on
the real thing. A used PS2 doesn't
cost much today and your gaming
experience will be so much better
than to run the games in emulation
on a computer.
Q: I have lots of movies and
stuff in iTunes on my Mac. I also
have an Xbox 360. Can I watch
those movies on my TV using
my Xbox?
A: Yes, you're in luck, you can
definitely do that and it's very easy
too. What you need is Connect 360
from Nullriver Software. (shuffle.to/
connect360) It's free to try and $20 if
you want to keep using it. Basically,
you install it and then your movies
and music from iTunes, as well as
photos from iPhoto, will be available
on your Xbox. However, Connect
360 does not support media bought
from iTunes.

Q: I just got an iPod touch as a
present at Christmas, and I'm
just now taking it out of the
box. How do I get applications
on to it? I also want to get PDF
files on to the iPod, how do I do
that?
A: First you need to set up an iTunes
account. You need iTunes for that
and you already have iTunes on your
Mac. You don't say, but I assume
you use a Mac. If not, iTunes is a
free download from itunes.com. In
iTunes you go to the Store menu
and click on «Create account.»
That will let you create an account.
Then you can either get apps with
iTunes- look for the «App Store»- or
on your iPod touch- look for the blue
icon named «App Store». When you
connect your iPod touch to your
Mac with the white USB cable you
can then click on the iPod on the left
in iTunes and click the «Applications»
tab. From there you can select which
apps to put on the iPod. For PDF
files there is no direct way to transfer
them from Mac to iPod touch. The
easiest way is actually to email them
to yourself, to an email account that
you've set up on the iPod. Then they
appear as attachements to the email
and you can tap on them when
reading the email and they PDF will
open. There are also many different
PDF applications in the App Store
that you can consider for transferring
and reading PDF files.
Q: I want to record good quality
audio with my iPod classic,
mostly when my friends and
I play music. What would you
recommend?
A: I'd recommend Blue
Microphone's Mikey. (www.bluemic.
com/mikey) It records at a very high
quality and is very easy to use. At
CES I quickly tried the next version
of the Mikey and unless you need
the microphone right away, I'd
wait for the new model to reach
the Middle East. Keep checking

Nowadays, when somebody thinks of buying a new
gadget, the first thing that pops up in their mind is to
turn on their PC, get on the Internet and do research
online. Especially when this product is related to
technology, i.e. computers, mobile phones, etc. They
log onto the manufacturer’s website and look at the
alternatives, read the specifications and get to know
the pricing as well. After that, they will most probably
check the other users’ reviews of the same product
and check a couple of video reviews as well. Once
they settle on a specific product and specifications,
then comes the next step: looking for an official dealer
in their country of residence.
Now comes the shocking moments. Once the
customer finds a local dealer and gets in touch with
them or visit the store, they get shocked with the high
price of the exact same products they saw on the main
company’s website. Apple’s dealer in Saudi Arabia,
Arab Computers (www.arabcomputers.com.sa), is
unfortunately one of the unjustified high price taggers.

priced on US Apple Store at $229 and is
being sold in Saudi Arabia at SAR 1,444
($385.07). That is 68% higher! Another
example is the Apple Keyboard with a
numeric pad, which is being sold on
Apple US Store at $49 and being sold in
Saudi Arabia for SAR 299 ($79.73) which
is 63% higher.
We are in an age where companies with
international operations can’t ignore the
fact that pricing information from around
the world is available for the customers at
a click of a button. Let’s look at another
example. In Saudi Arabia you can get HP
Laptop (Model DV6 2.26 GHz) for SAR
3,799 ($1010.66. Price was quoted on
2009-11-14), which sells on HP US Store
for $879.99 (Price was quoted on 2009-
11-14). That makes a difference here
of 14.85%. While Apple’s MacBook Pro
15-inch 2.53 GHz is selling for $1,699 on
Apple US Store, The exact same product
is selling for SAR 8,490 ($2,264) in Saudi
Arabia. That is 33.25% higher. And let’s
note that there is nothing special about
the Mac sold in Saudi Arabia except
the Arabic Keyboard which the Saudi
customer will be more than happy to give
up to save this 33.25% jump in the price.
If we consider the fact that the
designated dealer in Saudi Arabia is
getting the product at a special price
from the manufacturer, then things
become more frustrating. A consumer
might think of ordering the product online
and having it shipped through one of
the mail forwarding services available.
However, they’ll have to accept the risk of
no warranty coverage.
With the current economic situation,
customers are becoming more and more
conservative when it comes to spending.
Consequently, this causes tremendous
pressure on manufacturers to narrow
the gap in pricing deference between
the country of origin and the importing
one. Otherwise they will end-up losing
potential customers to their competitors.

Confessions of a
CES attendee

I'm writing this on the last day of CES in

Las Vegas, and after four days of consumer
electronics I'm glad this only happens once
a year. Think GITEX in Dubai on steroids and
you have some sense of what CES is. Full of all
kinds of consumer electronics, the halls of CES
are also full of all kinds of promotional tricks,
like magicians and other artists, lightly-dressed
ladies, and pretty much anything else you
can think of and expect of Las Vegas. If the
promotional trick makes sense for the product
you're selling, I think that's fine. For example,
Speck had artists paint a picture that could,
or perhaps even will, be used in future Speck
products. So companies were trying hard to
get noticed and perhaps that's necessary in
this busy, crowded and noisy environment.
That said, there was not much at CES that you
just had to go see. A columnist in a local Las
Vegas newspaper wrote "There is much hype
at CES this year, as there is every year, about
how the newest gadgets is going to Change
your Life Forever... This year the gadgets will
even - get ready for this - save the world!" The
not so subtle sarcasm is essentially true. Some
companies worked a bit too hard to hype
their products at their booths. I remember at
Macworld in 2009, word spread fast about the
Lightscribe Pulse Smartpen and that booth
was just swamped with people. The closest
to that at CES 2010 was probably the Parrot
AR.Drone, a four-rotor helicopter controlled
by iPhone. An ad-hoc Wi-Fi network between
the helicopter and the iPhone lets the pilot see
video from the on-board cameras as they tilt
and turn the iPhone to control it. To see that
in action was a true "wow" moment, but not
much else at CES was.

‫حول معرض «سي إي إس ‪ »CES‬هذه السنة‪ ،‬كما هو الحال في كل‬
‫سنة‪ ،‬ليتحدث الجميع عن كيف ستغير أحدث المنتجات اإللكترونية‬
‫حياتنا بشكل كامل‪ ...‬هذه السنة‪ ،‬ادعوا بأن المنتجات اإللكترونية لن‬
‫تكتفي بذلك‪ ،‬ولكن ستقوم – تأهبوا لسماع هذا‪ -‬بإنقاذ العالم!»‪.‬‬
‫هذه السخرية لم تخل من الحقيقة‪ ،‬فالشركات بذلت جهدًا أكثر من‬
‫الالزم إلثارة االهتمام ولخلق ضجة حول منتجاتها‪ .‬أتذكر في «ماك‬
‫وورلد ‪ »Macworld‬عام ‪ ،٢٠٠٩‬كيف انتشرت أخبار قلم «اليتسكرايب‬
‫بَلس ‪ »Lightscribe Pulse‬الذكي سريعًا عبر المعرض‪ ،‬ليمتلئ‬
‫جناح الشركة بالناس‪ .‬والجناح الذي حقق شعبية بطريقة مشابهة‬
‫في «سي إي إس» هذه السنة كان جناح «باروت إيه آر‪ .‬درون ‪Parrot‬‬
‫‪ ،»AR.Drone‬وهي عبارة عن طائرة مروحية بأربع شفرات يمكن‬
‫التحكم بها عن طريق «آي فون»‪ ،‬بينما يمكن لمن يتحكم بالمروحية‬
‫برؤية ما تقوم كاميراتها بتسجيله وبثه عبر الهاتف‪ .‬وجدت المنتج‬
‫فريدًا وغاية في اإلثارة‪ ،‬ولكنه لربما كان الشيء الوحيد الفريد في‬
‫هذا المعرض‪.‬‬
‫جريدة محلية في الس فيغاس كتب‪« :‬كان هناك الكثير من الضجة‬
‫أكتب هذا المقال في آخر يوم لي في معرض إلكترونيات المستهلك‬
‫في الس فيغاس‪ ،‬وبعد ‪ ٤‬أيام من المعرض‪ ،‬أعترف بأني سعيد‬
‫بأنه ال يحصل إال مرة واحدة في السنة‪ .‬تخيل جايتكس دبي على‬
‫ستيرويدات وقد تنجح في تخيل الجو في هذا المعرض‪.‬‬
‫إلى جانب المنتجات‪ ،‬امتألت القاعات بجميع أنواع العروض الترويجية‬
‫واإلعالنات‪ ،‬والتي تضمنت رسامين‪ ،‬ونساء في أزياء تكاد ال تكون‪،‬‬
‫وسحرة‪ ،‬وكل ما قد يخطر على بالك‪ ،‬وسط بريق الس فيغاس‪ .‬ال‬
‫أمانع العروض الترويجية طالما لها عالقة بالمنتج نفسه مثل حملة‬
‫«سبيك ‪ »Speck‬التي قام فيها بعض الرسامين برسم لوحات قد أن‬
‫تستخدم الحقًا في منتجات «سبيك»‪.‬‬
‫إن بذل أقصى جهد ممكن لجذب االنتباه في معرض بهذا الحجم‬
‫هو أمر ضروري للشركات‪ ،‬ولكن في النهاية‪ ،‬ال أعتقد أن المعرض‬
‫احتوى على ما يستحق الضجة التي أحاطت به‪ .‬أحد الكتاب في‬

‫عن لوحتها اإللكترونية الجديدة‪ .‬ال أدري إن كان «تويتر» يستحق‬ ‫حتى آخر لحظة!‬

‫األحد صباحًا‪ :‬أخبرني أحد زمالئي في الجامعة بأنه قد وجد عم ً‬

‫محطة المترو يوم السبت‪ .‬بل إن وراء كل اتصال‪ ،‬وكل صورة‪ ،‬هناك‬ ‫الصيف المقبل‪ .‬تفضل التشات‪ ،‬وال تؤمن بـ»فيسبوك»‪ ،‬و»تويتر» وكل‬

Why the
Nexus One isn't an
iPhone-killer
Within minutes of unboxing my Nexus One, almost two
weeks ago, I was inundated with queries by curious
colleagues and friends, online or otherwise, on whether
the Nexus One was better than the iPhone 3GS. Believe
me, it didn't take very long before my replies started
getting testy, and here's why.
You see, contrary to how the media played up the
Nexus One as a 'superphone', the iPhone-killer, the next
coming etcetera, it really isn't.
In this day and age, we've been conditioned to polarize,
that one MUST be better than the other, that my Apple
is better than your PC, the Nexus One is better than the
iPhone, that my Lamborghini is better than your Ferrari,
and the list goes on.
And it is this conditioning that blinds us to what these
things really are -- different strokes for different people.
Sure, both phones sport capacitative touchscreens,
virtual keyboards, internet connectivity for email and
web browsing, offer thousands of 3rd party applications
through proprietary platforms (App Store and Android
Market), and are capable of basic phone functions such
as text and MMS messaging, making and receiving calls,
conference calls, etc.
But that's about it, really, because while both do the
same thing, they interact differently with different
people. An iPhone user would find the Android interface
unintuitive and unfriendly, just as much as an Anrdoid
user would feel the same. But this feeling of something

being 'unintuitive' isn't limited to the world of Apple vs
Android. BMW owners feel the same way about Audis,
in the same way that an Apple user finds Microsoft
Windows 7 clunky, unstable, unfriendly, and I would say
the converse holds true.
True intuitiveness only applies if and when the person in
question is seeing something for the absolute first time,
his mind a clean slate, his cup empty. But that's not how
we are today. Many of us have used phones from Sony
Ericsson, Nokia, Apple, LG, Samsung, HTC, and have
driven cars from Toyotas to BMWs. Every experience is
unique.
The argument of whether the iPhone is better than
Android is as short-sighted and pointless as arguing
whether strawberry ice cream is better than chocolate
ice cream.
I've used Android-powered phones since the T-Mobile
G1 (aka HTC Dream), and moved on to the HTC Magic,
then the HTC Hero, and now the Nexus One. At best,
the Nexus One is evolutionary, not revolutionary when
compared to earlier generations of Android phones. I
also own an Apple iPhone 3G and an iPhone 3GS, and I
feel exactly the same- that the 3GS is evolutionary, rather
than revolutionary, compared to the 3G.
So, is there a better phone? No, but that's why Apple
positioned themselves as Think Different and not Think
Better.
That's all things really are. Different.

‫ال ‪ ،‬فهو القادر‬‫بشكل طبيعي‪ ،‬هو من لم يجرب أي منتج مشابه قب ً‬
‫على تجربته بعقل مفتوح ودون أي انطباعات مسبقة‪ .‬ولكن لم‬
‫يعد هذا ممكنًا في عصرنا الحالي‪ ،‬فكلنا قد استخدمنا العديد‬
‫ال سواء كانت «سوني إريكسون»‪ ،‬أو «نوكيا»‪ ،‬أو «إل‬ ‫من الهواتف قب ً‬
‫جي»‪ ،‬أو «سامسونغ»‪ ،‬أو «آبل»‪ ،‬أو «إتش تي سي»‪ ،‬وكلنا جربنا العديد‬
‫من السيارات‪ ،‬من «تويوتا»‪ ،‬إلى «بي إم دبليو»‪ ،‬وكل منا كان له تجربته‬
‫الفريدة مع منتج أو آخر‪.‬‬
‫ما إن قمت بفتح علبة هاتفي الجديد «نِكسوس وَ ن» منذ حوالي‬
‫أسبوعين‪ ،‬حتى غمرتني أسئلة زمالئي وأصدقائي الفضولية عن‬
‫إن كان هذا الهاتف أفضل من «آي فون ثري جي إس»‪ .‬وسرعان ما‬
‫اتخذت أجوبتي نبرة غاضبة‪ ،‬وسأشرح السبب في السطور المقبلة‪.‬‬
‫بالرغم من الضجة التي أثارتها وسائل اإلعالم التي روجت الهاتف‬
‫«كهاتف خارق»‪ ،‬و«كقاتل آي فون»‪ ،‬وكالهاتف القادم‪ ،‬تخلو هذه‬
‫العبارات من الصحة‪.‬‬

‫إن الجدل حول إن كان «آي فون» أفضل من «أندرويد»‪ ،‬يبدو لي جد ً‬

‫ال‬
‫فارغًا‪ ،‬محدودًا‪ ،‬وال معنى له‪ ،‬كمن يجادل بأن آيس كريم الفراولة‬
‫أفضل من آيس كريم الشوكوال‪.‬‬
‫استخدمت هواتف «أندرويد» عدة مرات‪ ،‬من «موبايل جي وَ ن‬
‫‪ »Mobile G1‬الذي عرف باسم «إتش تي سي دريم ‪ ،»HTC Dream‬ثم‬
‫«إتش تي سي هيرو»‪ ،‬واآلن « نِكسوس وَ ن»‪ .‬لقد جاء الهاتف بالجديد‪،‬‬
‫ولكنه لم يجلب معه ثورة كاملة مثلما كان الحال مع األجيال‬
‫السابقة من هواتف «أندرويد»‪ .‬أملك أيضًا كل من هاتف «آي فون ثري‬
‫جي» و«آي فون ثري جي إس»‪ ،‬وال أعتقد أن األخير كان ثوريًا‪ ،‬بل هو‬
‫امتداد وتطوير للهاتف السابق‪.‬‬
‫إذًا‪ ،‬هل هناك هاتف أفضل؟ الجواب هو ال‪ .‬ولكن لهذا السبب‪ ،‬قامت‬

This is a NAS (Network Attached Storage) and as far
as similar drives that I’ve tried are concerned, this is
the one I’d pick at this point in time. Take off the front
panel and you’ll see two bays for 3.5-inch hard drives.
The drives can be configured as RAID 0 for faster
performance or RAID 1 for safer data storage. It’s all
configurable through a web interface, which could be
a bit more user-friendly, but it works. Like many other
similar NAS products the Linkstation Duo comes with
all kinds of services built-in. There’s BitTorrent client
for automatic downloads without a computer, Time
Machine backup support, DLNA, UPnP and Bonjour
network discover and configuration, iTunes and more.
You just need to plug in the Ethernet cable to the
same networks as your Mac is on, fire up your web
browser and do some initial configuration. Then the
Buffalo drive should be accessible to all devices on
that network. Via web access you can connect to it
from anywhere on the Internet. Buffalo has done a
great job with the Linkstation Duo and if you’re looking
for a NAS, it’s where I suggest you start looking.

Etisalat Wi-Fi 3G modem

I’m not really sure what to call this little device, but it
seems MiFi (Mobile broadband and Wi-Fi) is the term
that’s applied most commonly. Basically what we’re
looking at is a 3G modem and a Wi-Fi router in one
small, battery-powered device. You connect it with
a USB cable to your Mac, which is also the way you
charge the modem. Once it’s plugged in, the installer
for the “Etisalat 3G Modem App”, which has been
updated and now works on Mac OS X 10.6, launches
and installs the necessary software. Five lights on the
device’s display tell you what’s going on, and three
small buttons on the side control it. Unfortunately
they’re just on/off type lights, which minimizes their
usefulness. They don’t show the level of signal strength
or how much capacity is left in the battery. (The battery
light just indicates when it needs recharging.) Turn the
device on with one button, enable Wi-Fi with another,
and use the software on your Mac to connect to the
Internet. Then you can share your 3G data connection
with others, up to five users can be connected. It’s very
convenient to have Wi-Fi access to share but usable
Wi-Fi connection reaches only a few meters; after
around three meters the signal drops to very low levels.
Behind the battery you’ll find the standard SSID (name
of the wireless network) and access key. Unfortunately
at this time there seems to be no way to configure the
Wi-Fi settings with Mac OS X, however after contacting
Etisalat, they said that an update coming soon from the
manufacturer would fix this problem. If that happens, it
would improve our rating of the device.

Gorillatorch and GorillaMobile 3G/3GS

Joby is best-known for their
innovative flexible tripod legs. Each
leg is divided into small, separate
parts that because of ball-joints
can twist, turn and articulate in
almost any angle and shape. Wrap
them around the handlebar on
your bike, get them to grip the
top of a door, place them like a
regular tripod on a flat surface;
arguably the only limitation is your
imagination. Joby is putting their
gorilla legs to good use in new
products at breakneck speed, it
seems. Let’s take a look at two of
the latest ones to use this unique
technology.
Gorillatorch
The Gorillatorch is basically a
powerful and small flashlight placed
on a set of gorilla legs. You’ll be
surprised how powerful it is, and
you can adjust the light by simply
turning a dial on one side of the
flashlight. That’s also the main
drawback with the Gorillatorch.
During the brief time I’ve had it,
it has accidentally been turned
on in my bag and as a result the
batteries have drained. I wish
there was a way to lock it in
place to avoid this issue. On the
positive side the feet of the tripod
are magnetic so they attach to
almost any metal surface, including
hanging the Gorillatorch upside
down or from a vertical surface.
This, in addition to being able
to wrap the legs around almost
anything, makes the Gorillatorch a
perfect tool for mechanics.
Gorillamobile 3G/3GS
The Gorillamobile 3G/3GS legs
come with a clip with universal
1/4-inch camera screw, a clip with
suction cup, as well as adhesive
clips. Between the three you
should be able to attach it to
almost anything. There’s also an
iPhone shell case into which an
iPhone 3G or 3GS can snap in and
is held securely. In turn, the case
can snap on to the head on the
tripod legs. It locks in place with a
twist of a collar on the tripod head
and once locked in, it’s not likely to
go anywhere. There’s really nothing
much to complain about with the
Gorillamobile 3G/3GS. I do wish
there was some choice in terms
of cases. Unfortunately in terms of
style, functionality and protection,
the shell that’s included can’t
be considered a good enough
replacement for a dedicated case,
for most users. Sure there are the
adhesive clips, but who wants
to put that on their nice iPhone
case and run the risk of ruining it?
I also wish the feet of the tripod
were magnetic like the feet on the
Gorillatorch.
Gorillacam
Especially if you have the
Gorillamobile you should also
check out the free Gorillacam
app for iPhone. It offers a number
of additional functions for the
camera on the iPhone, including
self-timer, time-lapse function,
bubble level, grid overlay on the
display and much more. The app
is meant for use with Gorillamobile,
but it doesn’t require it so get the
app even if you don’t have the
Gorillamobile.

BENQ’s Joybee GP1 falls in between regular projectors
and the really tiny ‘pico projectors’. It’s slightly smaller
than a Mac mini and weighs just over half a kilogram.
The native resolution of the GP1 is 858 x 600 so
it’s a bit limited, but you don’t have to set your Mac
to that resolution as the projector scales the input
very well and it can be 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratios.
It’s not powered by the traditional lamp with limited
life; instead it’s powered by what’s called “3LED”
technology. Basically it means you never have to
change any lamp or filter so less fuss and less cost.
According to BENQ it can project a picture up to two
meters on a wall or other surface. That may not sound
like much, but consider that it’s about twice as large
as a 42-inch TV. And for it’s small size it’s bright; 100
ANSI Lumens with a 2000:1 contrast ratio. Basically
that means bright and good contrast. It has a USB
port, so you can plug in a drive with your movies
and photos on it and enjoy them projected from the
Joybee. It works with most common movie and photo
formats. You control the projector by the control pad
on the top, or the remote. Both take some figuring
out, but you get used to them. The Joybee has built-in
speakers that may be good enough for some sound
effects when doing a presentation, but they’re not
powerful enough for gaming or watching movies. With
a few weak aspects, the GP1 is a good choice if you
want a portable projector. It has surprisingly good
picture quality and it’s affordable too.

Fujifilm Finepix Z33WP

Fujifilm calls the Z33WP the “world’s
smallest waterproof camera,” and
although I don’t know whether that’s
true, it is indeed very small and light.
In fact, you can easily throw it in
your pocket and pretty much forget
that it’s ever there. So you could
keep it in the pocket of your bathing
shorts without being bothered by
it. It has a 10 megapixel sensor
(3,648 x 2,736 pixels), 3x optical
zoom and a 2.7 inch LCD on the
back. The 35mm equivalent focal
range of the lens is 35-105mm. In
fully automatic shooting there are six
automatic scene settings and face
detection, and most of the time the
Z33WP does pretty well. It runs into
trouble in low-light and high-contrast
situations, both tricky for any digital
camera to handle. Despite its small
size, the camera is pleasant for me
to handle. Rounded corners makes
it fit well in my hands and fingers
fall naturally on the controls. Fujifilm
says the camera is waterproof to a
depth of three meters. I didn’t have
a chance to verify that claim, but
this is not a camera for diving. It’s
more suited for a day at the beach,
in the desert or somewhere else with
a climate dangerous for a normal
digital camera. The controls on the
back are collected in two columns
along the right side. This takes some
getting used to as it is unusual, but
after a while it works fine. I had a
bit of problem with the automatic
white balance too. More often than
not, manually setting white balance
produced more pleasant results,
and that shouldn’t really be the case
with a modern camera. Video is also
limited. You can record up to 640 x
480 pixels, but at 30 fps it’s only 320
x240. That’s too low compared to
other cameras today. The conclusion
has to be that for a weatherproof
camera the Z33WP takes okay
photos. It’s a camera you can take
with you more places than a regular
one, but you give up some in photo
quality and functionality.

Even though Google’s Nexus One might be all the
rage on the Internet, it’s not launched here yet, and
we don’t know if it ever will be. If you want to get an
Android phone that is officially available in the Middle
East right now, Samsung’s Galaxy Spica is a good
choice. Physically, the Galaxy is very similar to some
other Samsung phones like the Jet. It sports a 800MHz
processor, which makes everything run fast and you
don’t generally have to wait for things to finish other
than when things have to be downloaded. The 3.2-inch
screen is AMOLED with 320 x 480 pixels. It’s bright,
clear and has great colors. On the back you find the 3.2
megapixel camera with autofocus and geotagging, but
no flash. All the Google goodies you expect are already
installed and after you provide your Google credentials
it all gets populated and working. There’s Gmail, Google
Maps, contacts, and calendar. That immediate access
to all Google data and services is one aspect I really like
about Android. This phone runs Android 1.5 though.
There seem to be rumors about a 2.0 update becoming
available soon, but there’s no word from Samsung about
that. The battery lasted longer than my iPhone 3GS.
Even with full use of calls, email, web and more, I got
almost two full working days out of one charge. With
the iPhone 3GS I get about one day with heavy Internet
use. In conclusion, Samsung Galaxy Spica is decent,
but nothing very spectacular, in terms of hardware. In
software, it would be much more attractive if it was
running a more up-to-date version of Android. With
Android 2.0, this would be a great buy. As it is, it’s okay
if you’re lusting for an officially-available Android phone
right now.

an unusual design, with a shape
somewhat resembling a ram’s horns.

The design facilitates the sound
enhancing features of the unit,
with a speaker on each side, and
a downward-facing bass speaker.
The sound is quite good, providing
surprisingly rich and spacious sound
for such a small device, and built-in
Bass Boost and Surround Sound
modes add to its quality. I’ve tried it
in a couple of different large rooms
and found the performance very
pleasing. However, I did notice that
at higher volume levels the bass did
not scale as well as the rest of the
sound, so when really “cranking it
up”, its small size starts to show. The
“Made for iPod” SC-SP100 comes
with a very nice remote that allows
you to have good control of both the
music functions of your iPod and the
SC-SP100 from a distance, although
this is limited by the only display
being the tiny one on the iPod. It
also “Works with iPhone”, providing
slightly less remote functionality
on iPhones and iPod touches than
with classic iPods, but still ample
usability. There is an audio port for
external input, and a Mini USB port
to allow syncing with a PC, although
it didn’t seem to work when we tried
it with the unit supplied to us, even
when trying it with several different
computers. Still, overall this is an
impressive device with very pleasing
sound.

To be honest, it’s hard to find the
perfect bag, because it’s a balance
between function, form, style and
other factors. I’m usually a fan of
Speck’s products and I also really
like the Portpack. It’s a messenger-
style bag with a vertical orientation,
meaning the notebook sits vertically
in the bag. The design is suitable for
notebooks up to 15-inch size. There
are enough pockets for a large-
size notepad, a couple of pens or
pencils, your iPod or iPhone and a
few cables. Compared to some bags
that’s not a lot, but it’s enough for
going to school, taking the notebook
to work or a short trip. One nice
touch is that the main compartment
where the notebook would sit is
lined with a very soft material. It’ll
hug your precious Mac very snugly
and keep it safe. There’s a very good
shoulder strap, but if you want to, it’s
detachable and a handle comes out
of zippered pocket at the top of the
bag. Speck has come up with three
very cool designs, so you should
be able to find one that suits you.

What is social networking?
If we're cynical, social networking
is nothing more than the latest fad,
something we've been doing for a
long time, but just now got a new
name for. A more realistic view is
that it's new technologies that in
different ways are changing how
we interact with other people as
well as businesses. As Paul wrote
in the article in March last year:
“Social networking is a fancy way
of saying that we use web sites,
email, chat, Twitter, and other types
of internet technologies to meet
new friends, keep in touch with
old friends, and anything else we
do of a social nature.” With social
networking you may have a private
conversation with an old friend on
the other side of the world, share
photos with your family, find a job or
hire someone, ask for suggestions
for where to go for dinner and much,
much more. If that sounds like things
you have been doing already with
existing technologies and services,
that's because they are. But social
networking has changed how we
do all that and introduced ways
of interacting that we've not seen
before.

Examples of Social Networking

We’re only going to cover a few social networking
services in this article, but there are hundreds if not
thousands of other services that you can check out. They
all have their own characteristics and you could decide
to use many of them for different things. We usually say
“there are Facebook people and there are Twitter people”
and the two groups are not 100% overlapping. With the
different characteristics of social networking services
you should take a look at what’s going to be kept in your
toolbox.

Facebook
The champ of social networking is without a doubt
Facebook. Started as way for college students to keep
up with each other, it has continually grown to include
additional “networks” such as businesses, geographic
areas and other groups. Although
Facebook has been criticized for
lacking in privacy and security,
with an account on Facebook you
have a lot of control over what
sees what information. At the very
heart of Facebook is that you
connect with other users that, if
they approve, become your “friends” on the site. Once
someone is connected as a friend they have more access
to information about you. You can then send messages
to your friends, chat with them, share photos and much,
much more. You can get email and SMS notifications of
when your friends post things, like when they upload new
photos. And remember if someone tries to link up with
you as a friend on Facebook, it is perfectly okay to say
no or ask how you know that other person if they're not
immediately recognizable as someone you know. This
fine-grained control is one reason why some people like
Facebook better than, for example, Twitter. Facebook
is, more so than Twitter, used as a web site although
there is a very good Facebook application for iPhone
and iPod touch. Something else that's spreading on
Facebook as wildfire is applications. There are thousands
of applications you can add to your Facebook account
that help you accomplish certain things. Some are more
useful than others. One of the most popular games of all
times, because it's on Facebook, is Farmville; sometimes
it seems like it's played by everyone on the site. Adding
applications to your Facebook profile increases the
exposure to potential security and privacy issues and
they can also, if you're not careful, spam and annoy your
Facebook friends.
YouTube
Isn't that just a video site? Well, not just. YouTube also
has substantial social elements to it, allowing one to have
friends and followers, similar to the other sites. It also
makes it easy to embed videos on another site, such as
Facebook or on your blog. And one of the more popular
aspects of socializing online for some time has been,
“Hey, check out this cool video!” YouTube is compatible
with Mac browsers although not the Safari browser on
iPhone, but there is a special app for that which comes
with the iPhone. And keep in mind that YouTube is
owned by Google so we're sure that the video sharing
service will continue to develop with an increasing
number of social aspects.

Twitter
Last, but by no means least, let's look at Twitter. In many
ways Twitter is the very symbol of social networking even
though they were not first nor are they the biggest. But it's
clear that the 140-character message limit and immediacy of
Twitter has captured the attention of millions like nothing else
before it. Twitter is often called a «microblogging» service
because of the limited message-length of 140 characters.
After getting a free account on Twitter you can post these
short messages called «tweets». If you want to keep up with
what other users on Twitter are tweeting, you can «follow»
them. By following others you can see all the tweets they
post, and you can reply to them in public, so your tweet can
be seen by anyone, or with a private «Direct Message», so
only the intended recipient can see it. You can post links to
pictures, videos, web pages and more using a number of
services that more or less automatically shorten the URL
of the target. Most apps we list for Mac and iPhone have
this functionality built-in. With the limited message length
you have to be careful about what and how you write what
you want to tell someone. A whole new language has been
formed by Twitter's increasing popularity in much the same
way that phone SMS has. There's not much privacy in
Twitter-land, but you can lock your Twitter account and only
let certain other Twitter users see what you post. If you do
that you miss out on a big part of what's fun and rewarding
with the service, the ability to reach a large group of people
with a short message in real time. Because as soon as you
post your tweet your followers can see it, if they are online
of course. If they are not they see it the next time they
connect. That immediacy is one aspect of Twitter that is very
appealing and also addictive. Twitter is a great way to keep
in touch with your friends and what they're doing all day
long. There are many ways to access Twitter, so it's is very
convenient to send out a quick update no matter what you
are doing. Twitter's website, twitter.com, is the primary portal
for tweets, but there are many standalone applications for
Mac OS X and iPhone/iPod touch. Twitter apps also exist
for other computer platforms and many mobile phones and
PDAs as well.

Figure out what works for you
Find your «social networking voice»! By that we mean
that what various people use social networking for is as
different as people themselves. Two users on Twitter,
for example, won't be using Twitter in the same way or
for the same purposes. Whether it's Twitter, Facebook
or something else, you should try to figure out what you
use that service for, how you want to use it, and basically
what works for you. Very likely you'll find that a mix of
social networking services will work for you. You will use
Facebook for some things and some friends and Twitter
for other things and different social groups, for example.
What mix that is and how you work with it is up to you to
figure out. That means you also have to explore different
social networking sites to try them out. The two main
ones we talk about here, Facebook and Twitter, are a
good start.
Prudent to be cautious
We should point out that it's a good idea to be careful
in general with personal information, like home address,
mobile phone number, credit card data, etc. and even
more so online. One thing about social networking is that
it can be seductive and you become less careful with
what you share. Once you put something in a tweet,
for example, chances are that information is publicly
available forever, even if you delete it. So don't put
anything online, whether it's in a social network or not,
that you don't mind anyone seeing at any point in the
future. If you post something, consider that will be there
forever. You should also be careful with clicking on links
in tweets and other types of messages just as you should
be careful with links in emails. Security firms are seeing
the fastest growth of malware (viruses, worms, trojans
etc.) distribution today in social networks and related
services and applications. Social networking is also
increasingly the means by which the “bad guys” steal
personal information, so be careful out there.

CES in Las Vegas in January is the biggest event on
the consumer electronics calendar. For the first time,
Shufflegazine was reporting live from the exhibitions
and you can find more photos, videos and posts on the

ces) In this article I will try to share with you some of the
main themes from Las Vegas.
Cameras
CES is not a particularly great platform for introducing
new cameras. Nonetheless several companies, including
Samsung, Olympus and Panasonic launched new
consumer-oriented digital cameras. Among the more
interesting ones we find Samsung’s NX10, which uses a
proprietary lens mount.

Connected stuff ‫مع االنترنت‬

The wide variety of devices that are Internet-enabled
continues to grow; from cars to clocks and more.
The Mojito by Blue Lounge is a good example of that.
Looking basically like a large alarm clock, it’s basically a
small Linux-powered computer with a display on which
you can show a number of apps or widgets, all which
can connect to the Internet to fetch information or do
something else. The Blue Lounge guys told me that it
would launch later this year.

Ebook readers
By the time you read this, Apple will have introduced a
tablet with which you can read books, newspapers and
magazines. It seemed like every company had their own
ebook reader on display. Most talked about was arguably
Plastic Logic’s QUE Proreader. It’s only for the US
market, at least for now, and with 3G as well as Wi-Fi it’s
an attractive ebook reader, albeit a bit expensive at $800.

Of course with Apple not exhibiting at CES there were

something else. For Mac users there was a lot to try

Netbooks, the hottest item around for the last couple
of years, continue to garner great interest and most PC
manufacturers were showing off new netbooks. Nokia,
traditionally not a PC manufacturer, has also entered
the netbook market with their Booklet 3G. Although the
Booklet has not been launched in the Middle East yet, it’s
expected to reach our market later in 2010.

‫‪presence at CES was tablets. NVIDIA unveiled their‬‬
‫‪Tegra 2 platform, which a number of manufacturers will‬‬
‫‪use in tablet devices coming out this year. It’s the “year‬‬
‫‪of the tablet”, NVIDIA’s CEO declared. Intel-based tablets‬‬
‫‪were also all the rage with the best-known example‬‬
‫‪being an HP prototype that Steve Ballmer, Microsoft’s‬‬
‫‪CEO, showed off in his keynote address.‬‬

Since we started the Tech Chat podcast (shuffle.
to/techchat) I’ve received questions about how to
listen to it and how to subscribe to it, so I wanted to
try to straighten out a few question marks if I may. I
originally put this article online, but thought it would be
appropriate to include it in print as well to reach more
potential listeners. This article also serves as a sort of
FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) for our podcast.

Does it work only with iPod or iTunes?
This is a common misconception about podcasts,
probably because of the name. The answer is no,
you don’t have to have an iPod, iTunes or iPhone.
Anything that can play MP3 files will do very nicely,
which includes pretty much any computer as well as
mobile device today. Actually, in terms of subscribing
to a podcast, Juice (juicereceiver.sourceforge.net) is
an alternative to iTunes. Juice is available for Windows,
Mac and Linux and it’s free. An alternative for iPhone is
RSS Player. (shuffle.to/rssplayer)
How do I listen to the
podcast?
Here you basically have two options:
1) Download individual file: for each
show we put notes online, which
include names of guests, links to
web pages, etc. At the end of each
show’s notes we put direct links to
the audio file. You can download that
file and listen to it.
2) Subscribe: if you subscribe to the
show you won’t have to go look for it
every week, instead it’s automatically
downloaded for you and as soon as
it’s downloaded it’s ready for you to
listen to.
Do I pick the MP3 or AAC
version?
The unfortunately answer to
this question is that it
depends. If you have
an iPod, iPhone or if you
use iTunes then the choice is
clear: pick the AAC version. With the AAC version you
get some options you don’t with the MP3 one. You
get a table of contents of each show so with a simple
click or tap you can jump straight to any segment
without having to listen through all that comes before
it. You also get to see pictures of what we talk abut on
the show. These pictures show up in iTunes or on the
display of your iPod or iPhone. The MP3 version is there
for compatibility. If you want a file that plays almost
everywhere, get this version. You miss some of the
functionality of the AAC version, but the audio quality
should be almost exactly the same. One cool thing to
try is to open one of the AAC files with the Quicktime
player in Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard

How do I subscribe to the podcast?
Note that the following screen shots show the Mac OS
X version of iTunes, but the instructions apply to the
Windows version as well.
If you have a US iTunes account, just search for
“shufflegazine” in the iTunes store. You’ll find two
options, click on the “Tech Chat” one (in the picture it’s
the one on the left).
Once on the screen below, just click the “Subscribe”
button.
Even if you don’t have US iTunes account you can
subscribe, of course. The easiest way to subscribe
to the podcast is by using iTunes. If you don’t have
iTunes it’s a free download from itunes.com. Once
iTunes is installed, go to the “Advanced” menu and click
on “Subscribe to podcast”. Type in the URL (http://
shufflegazine.libsyn.com/rss/aac) or copy and paste it
from our web site and click “OK”.
An icon should appear, double click that icon to get in
to the list of shows for the podcast.
After double clicking the icon you should see above
you’ll see a list of shows available. iTunes should start
downloading the most recent show, but you can click
the “Get” button for any show you want to download or
even “Get all” to download all available shows.
