m. EMMA
b.c.1050

"…Richard fitz Turolf…" witnessed a charter dated to 1103/04 under which King Henry I confirmed
property to Saint-Martin de Marmoutier, Tours.(1) Richard Fitz Turold was an Anglo-Norman landowner
who was mentioned in the Domesday Survey. He had a castle at Cardinham where he was a major tenant
and steward of Robert of Mortain. He also held the manor of Pnehallam and was probably the builder of
Restormel Castle. Cardinham castle remained in the family until the 14th century and later became a ruin.
The manor of Cardinham was one of the few places where the custom of "Free Bench" is recorded. By this
custom a widow could retain tenure of the land until she remarried.
