Los Angeles

Rio Connect
We studied the Los Angeles River
and its surrounding communities
The concrete channel
prevents natural river
function
Goal 1:
Improve water quality and restore river
function

Where possible we are

removing the concrete and
allowing percolation and
natural processes to take
hold
Rail infrastructure is
widely distributed and
often creates barriers
for access to the LA
River and mobility
through the community
Goal 3:

Consolidate rail networks and

align HSR seamlessly into the
city.
existing auto infrastructure often
Title
acts as a barrier for connectivity
between habitat patches and the LA
River corridor
Goal:
Title
enhance wildlife habitat and connectivity

Development of access routes

at major habitat patches will
add to open space and allow
mobility through the greater
LA River corridor
Barriers and
infrastructure
prevent accessibility
to the river
and disconnect
communities
A diverse mix of
communities and
cultures can be
found all over
Los Angeles
Goal 4:
Connect communities to each other, the
river, nature, and the greater Los Angeles
metropolitan area

Remove barriers, modify

infrastructure, and encourage
social + cultural programs to
increase accessibility to the
Los Angeles River
Public safety is
threatened by our car
dependant city
Reduce automobile travel
Goal 5: Reduce automobile travel and
increase walking, biking and public
and increase walking,
transport
biking, and public
transportation

The Los Angeles River defined the success and
vitality of early Los Angeles. Over time, however,
it has become all but forgotten. The River flows
through the heart of the city touching multiple
communities on its journey to the sea.

Our aim is to reconnect those communities to

the River and to each other. Through holistic
ecological and social design, we wish to redefine
the city’s relationship to the River in a way that
responds to the diversity of this unique urban
environment.
