Learning Outcomes 2.1
Describes the mission, philosophy and goals of the organisation/work setting
where you are undertaking your practice learning
The Traffic Management and Road Safety Unit (TMRSU) consists of a team of civil engineers
and technical officers, which has 2 distinct but complementary functions:
Improving the movement of traffic on our roads.
Reducing the number and severity of road accidents to manageable levels.
Its philosophy is to adopt a high level of integrity in its methods and practice and to embrace a
diversity of perspectives in its processes.
Its main goals include the following:
1. Improving the fluidity of traffic using conventional traffic management measures such
as: parking restriction, one-way scheme, turn restrictions and entry/exit restrictions.
2. Designing, providing and maintenance of traffic lights.
3. Collection and management of data on traffic volumes and compositions along most
heavily trafficked routes.
4. Collection and analysis of accident data.
5. Modifying the road environment with engineering measures to make the roads safer for
every user.
6. Revisiting existing legislation and propose new laws related to road safety to adapt with
changing traffic conditions and breakthroughs in international road safety research.
7. Modifying road user behaviour through education, training and publicity programs.

Learning Outcomes 2.4

Describes your own contributions to the team(s) you form part of in the work
setting
1. Our team assisted the Engineers/ Senior Engineers to determine the speed limits on all
the roads around the island. This exercise was used as a pre-requisite to implement the
project of scaling down the speed limits on our roads in a bid to reduce the number of
accidents. Each team member was assigned to a maximum of 2 districts to work upon.
Prior to the desk study carried out, a proper planning was carried out by the team to
perform the given assignment in a more efficient manner.
2. Our team assisted the Technical Officers to determine all the specific locations where
Advance Directional Signs (ADS) needed to be replaced. Moreover, we assisted the
draughtsman by drawing all the ADS for each junction or round about.
3. Our team assisted the Inspection officers to implement single and double yellow lines
near a mosque upon formal request from an inhabitant in that region.
