Upon completion of his bachelor degree in Architecture from Woodbury University in 1999, Jose
Carlos Alvarado began his design career with the involvement in multiple phases ranging from
design to construction administration; influencing his professional development at an early stage
emphasizing on his objective to learn how buildings are constructed. His career endeavor has
allowed him to work on multiple building types ranging from rehabilitation of existing buildings to
Higher Education. As a young designer and having achieved the opportunity to participate in the
design stages of a building; the desire to become a well rounded professional provided the need to
further comprehend the building process from where the interest of the technical aspect of building
components and their representation became the fundamental path to achieve such goal. The
fluctuation introduced by experiencing multiple work environments created a different perspective
on the process of Architecture relative to the building type, and procedures dealing with distinct
applicable building codes and how the distinct disciplines also play an important role to construct a
building; part of his learning was gained by coordination of different disciplines ranging on a wide
scope of building components. There are key elements one acquires from each individual experience
relative to the involvement on the design process which delineated the path to further develop the
professional growth. The transition to the construction field where his Architectural experience
became fundamental was facilitated by the Administrative process and ability to visualize and
trouble shoot day to day concerns, issues brought on by sub-contractors, owner’s directive, and
Architect’s intent; part of his development was based on experience gathered by the bidding
process, formulating construction budgets, orchestrating sub-contractor’s involvement relative to
the stage of the project, all within a cohesive schedule to best achieve completion deadlines and
cost feasibility.
