To make a Radio Advert on Logic you must have a Mac Mini, a monitor, speakers, a keyboard, a

MIDI keyboard, a microphone, and Logic Express 9.

Logic is the software used to create the radio advert. It allows you to create pieces by
adding in music, sound effects, and speech.
MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) is what allows you to create the music. The
MIDI keyboard allows you to play your own pieces in your own style, therefore placing it
onto logic for you to edit and add to the radio advert. This is what we recorded all our
music with.
Logic has many different software instruments for you to use. You can create many
different pieces with the different styles of instrument and sound effects in the Logic
library. We used this to create a piece with two grand pianos and a cello. The Audio
channels are used for MP3 files and voice files. We used an Audio channel for our
narrator who described and promoted our product in our advert.
The transport bar is used to navigate through the song and to find and keep the right time
signature. There is a play, stop, previous, next, and record button. The display bar at the
top, next to the Transport Bar, shows the bar, beat, BPM, key, and time signature. You are
able to change the BPM and key. We used this to adjust the timings of the piece and
ensure that all three adverts were the correct length.
The inspector allows you to add effects to the software instruments and audio clips. It
enables you to add effects like reverb and EQ whilst adjusting the volume the track. We
used this to change the voice of our narrator. We made it slightly deeper and rougher.
The tool box is for changing notes and bars. It includes tools like the pencil, eraser, scissor
and velocity tool. These are used to add, remove, separate, and change the intensity of a
note.
Quantizing is used to ensure that all notes are in time. you can quantize notes from the
nearest 1/64 note to the closest 1/1 note. We used it to make sure all our instruments
were in time with each other. We used it to make sure our pianos and cellos were in time.
We used automation to keep a constant balance of dynamics between the narrators voice
and the other instruments.
We used the piano roll to adjust the notes. It allows you to have a more specific and
precise view of them to adjust them perfectly. We can change the position and length
using the pointer. The quantise tool allowed us to keep the notes in time. The velocity tool
allowed us to change the intensity of the notes so we were able to adjust how noticeable
the music in the background was. Obviously we lowered the velocity during the periods of
speech and increased in between the speech.
I think we were set the task to test our ability and balance of creativity and preciseness. 60
seconds seems like a long time for a radio advert but turned out to not be long enough for
all that we wanted to do. The same applies for the 30 second and 10 second adverts. I
think it went successfully and we were able to achieve that balance. We took inspiration
from apple adverts (seeing as our product we were promoting was the iPhone 7) but
managed to not completely resemble them. I think that we need to develop on our timing
skills and vocal content.
