FOREWORD
Arthur Dewing's cataloguing methods reveal much about him as a collector. Using
a card system, Dewing noted a number of details about each coin immediately upon acquir-
ing it: the supplier; year of acquisition; the price; and those particulars which he deemed
He numbered each new acquisition based on the page numbers of B. V. Head's Historia
Numorum. If a new piece of the same or similar type was to be added, it received an A
or a or a suffix. A more complicated system can hardly be imagined, but his cards
When the Dewing Foundation, to whom the coins passed by bequest, decided to publish
the collection, these cards proved surprisingly useful, facilitating the work of the authors
in their task of providing all essential numismatic data for each coin.
The Dewing assemblage of ancient Greek coins cannot easily be compared with other
large collections of its kind. Sir Herman Weber amassed about twice the number of
Dewing's holdings. But Weber and others gave full attention to the bronze issues which
our collector chose to neglect entirely. Did his suppliers not have the stamina to break
through his self-forged armor and inspire him to see the beauty and importance of Greek
bronze coins? Jameson was drawn to the finest in art and state of preservation; Dewing,
however, saw the history behind the coin and the unique accomplishment of each die.
He collected the minorsthe diminutive silver coinslong before they became fashion-
able. At the same time he was literally fascinated by the great series of Syracusan silver
coinage and in particular by the decadrachms which he went after in a fantastic if not
fanatical way. Has any private collector before or after him acquired even half the number
of Dewing's decadrachms?
Great Greek coins which he owned, or knew of, were the life companions of a man who
excelled as a scholar and businessman. When we first met by chance in the Boston Museum
of Fine Arts, he immediately pounced on me with his famous query: "Do you have an Aitna
tetradrachm in your pocket?" Whereupon I replied, "Is the Brussels Aitna the coin of
your dreams?" I saw a quick and piercing look in his eyes before he quietly nodded his
bearded head. When, in fact, another unique coin of Aitna came our way, Dewing turned

Three Reflections
Arthur Dewing was born in Boston on April 16, 1880 and died there on January 19,
1971 in his 91st year. As he often said, he was not a strong child, and his mother had to
work hard to give him the best of an early education. He grew healthy through a devotion
to the outdoors and the puritan virtues of his New England forebears. His three academic
degrees were all earned at Harvard, A.B. in 1902, A.M. in 1903, and the Ph.D. in 1905.
Like so many of his generation, he did further graduate study in Germany, at the Univer-
sity of Munich. His teaching career was mainly at Harvard, from 1902 to 1913 in philos-
ophy and from 1911 to 1933 in economics and finance. He rose to be a professor and one
Arthur Dewing's family was the happiest. In 1910 he married a fellow philosopher,
Frances Rousmaniere, and they are survived by three daughters (Mrs. Lloyd Morain, Mrs.
Stuart Avery, Jr., and Mrs. James Ewing), many grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
On April 16, 1970 Mr. Dewing's daughters gave him a big party for family and friends in
the ancestral homestead on Waverly Avenue in Newton. Seated in an old leather arm-
chair, two great-grandchildren at his knee, Arthur Dewing could have been easily taken
for a patriarch of another age, the "Angel of Hadley," for instance. During the last 20 years
of his life he liked to refer to himself as "Old Methuselah," and so he seemed on this oc-
casion.
It is often hard to separate fact from legend in the life of a great man, and so it was with
Arthur Dewing, even in his lifetime. His vast and complex business enterprises occupied
only part of his time from the Great Depression onwards. His concern for the antiquities
of his native New England led him onto the boards of a number of worthy associations,
notably the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities, of which he was a
president. His frugal habits, combined with his tall, spare, commanding presence, made
him a walking advertisement for the Spartan life of bygone America wherever he went.
Many years ago he and I went together from Stack's, the famous coin store then on West
46th Street in New York City, to the Automat around the corner on Fifth Avenue. "What
will you have, sir," asked the man behind the hot dishes, as we pushed our trays along in
the line. The reply came like Olympian thunder (and people at the tables nearby turned
Arthur Dewing's writings are classics. His Financial Policy of Corporations was first
published in 1920 and has gone through many editions and revisions since that date. It is
full of classical references, parts having been written or rewritten with the rolling hills above
Aulis and the plain of Marathon fresh in mind. Mr. Dewing attributed his love of the
classics to the inspired teaching of George Herbert Palmer at Harvard, the Hellenist whose
"wine-dark sea" translations of Homer were read in every school and college throughout
the United States at least until the Lattimore translations of the 1950s and 1960s. Mr.
Dewing's practical applications of the classics took the form not only of writing and travel
He was long a trustee of the Archaeological Institute of America, president of the Boston
Society (the Institute's oldest chapter), a member of the Council of the American Numis-
matic Society, and that wonderful organization's president during difficult years of re-
organization between 1947 and 1949. During his earlier trips to Greece, Mr. Dewing began
collecting Greek vases, Geometric urns, Corinthian aryballoi, and simple Attic lekythoi of
the type one used to see in village shops or in the stores of Pandrosou Street ("Shoe Lane")
Athenian vases of the sixth and fifth centuries B.C., the traditional pinnacle of Greek art,
at auctions or from dealers in England and America. By the time I first came to know
Mr. Dewing well, at Harvard following four years of World War II, he had "completed"
his collection of 60 or so vases. The group, or a selection therefrom, was always available
for exhibition, and, over the years, Wheaton College, the Fogg Museum, and the Museum
of Fine Arts, Boston benefited from his generosity. At his memorial service in Lincoln,
an early red-figured pelike with athletes in conversation stood in solitary dignity on a small
Greek coins, their pursuit, the history they evoked, and the personalities, scholars,
the 1930s, when he happened to be riding on a train with Mrs. Dewing's colleague and
friend, the great Mount Holyoke classicist, Catherine M. Ga1t. Once bitten by the bug
of numismatics, as with many other disciplines, Mr. Dewing was relentless in the quest.
He always seemed to be in the right place at the right time. When a Philadelphia cultural
Syracuse, the masterpieces of Greek coinage at the end of the fifth century B.C., Mr.
Dewing materialized with his checkbook. In the late 1940s and early 1950s he was able
to buy brilliantly at the sales and from the private collections that were coming on the
market in England. The collection is now the property of the Dewing Numismatic
Foundation, and a memorial exhibition of the coins and vases was held at the Fogg
Museum in the spring of 1971. Mr. Dewing was long curator of coins at the Massachussetts
Historical Society.
He always had time for the young. As each of his grandchildren reached a certain age,
University classroom with a box of rare Greek coins under his arm and give an enthralling
demonstration of relationships between the age of Perikles and the 20th century. He loved
animals, too, raising rabbits in Newton and holding partnership in an animal farm in
Florida.
Great humanists are remembered in a variety of small ways. Arthur Dewing still seems
nearby, waiting for the bus at the bottom of Willard Street, where he owned the house of
the "village smithy," or drinking a ginger ale in Cronin's, near his office. Nearly 15 years
ago he gave my wife and me two large, rare turtles from Peru and Morocco, named ap-
propriately Ajax and Smerdis (the ancient Persian king who had no ears). He said they
were ageless when they came, and they still run about our house on Coolidge Hill in Cam-
bridge. They are small, silent symbols of the eternal qualities of "Old Methusaleh," his life,
Cornelius C. Vermeule
Arthur Stone Dewing was philosopher, chemist, professor of economics and finance and
matist. He was the rare case of the metaphysical philosopher turned business man and
classical numismatist.
I came to know Arthur Stone Dewing as a teacher not of large classes of business ad-
Greek Archaeology class at Harvard lugging along with apparent casualness some of the
most beautiful and valuable Greek coins in existence. His spectacular collection enjoyed no
more security than the lock of his old-fashioned automobile trunk; he seemed to have no
great apprehensions either about keeping his coin treasures in his simple abode in Newton.
Dewing loved to tease, "pater le bourgeois." Once I met him in the crowded subway in
Harvard Square. With a twinkle in his eye and a sly smile on his face he asked me, "Do
you want an American silver penny?" He reached into his pocket and brought out Greece's
most famous coin, the Demareteion, and said: "Take this silver penny and play with it for
a couple of days." I gasped, then looked again. It was a British Museum cast!
In his facial expression Dewing had something of the Socratic EI RON. And, it was not
only his face that recalled Socrates. With true Socratic method he would question and
challenge his students, thus eliciting keen interest both in the stories he had to tell about
his acquisition of coins and in the diversified aspects of business, beauty, economics and
subject matter that the coins offered. In this role of a challenging and enthusiastic leader
Arthur Dewing's association with the American Numismatic Society was active and
long standing. He became a member in 1928 and the next year was elected a Fellow, the
voting class of Society membership. During the following decade he visited the Society
in New York frequently, consulting with its staff, while building his own collection.
Following the death of Edward Newell in 1941, Dewing was elected to the Society's govern-
ing Council, a position he continued to hold until a few weeks before his death in January
1971.
Arthur Dewing served the Society in a number of capacities. In his area of collecting
interest, he was appointed to the Ancient Coin Committee in 1942 and when, in 1945,
Coin Committee, serving as its chairman from 1955 until the end of his life. During the
period 1949-52 he was chairman of the Huntington Medal Committee, which selects
As a Councillor, Dewing held membership on the Finance Committee, 1946-47 and the
Executive Committee, from its inception in 1955 until his resignation in 1971. By far,
Dewing's greatest contribution in service to the Society came as Vice President, 1944-46
and as President, 1947-49. During his tenure, the role of the Society as a museum, library
and research center, as well as a membership organization, was more clearly defined and,
through the work of the Committee on Reorganization, appointed by him, the duties and
responsibilities of the Society's professional staff were clarified. These administrative im-
adopted in 1948.
In his first address as President, Dewing noted that there had been imposed on the ANS
a renewed "duty and obligation to serve the ideals of numismatic scholarship" by virtue
then anonymous, later acknowledged to be from the Society's principal benefactor, Archer
It is clear from the Council minutes of 1946 that the Society's Finance Committee antici-
pated selling the stock to diversify its holdings. Indeed that was soon the case with regard
to the other New York cultural organizations that had also received Hammond stock from
Huntington at the same time as the ANS. But Dewing volunteered, and was entrusted
by the Council, to travel to the west coast to investigate the little-known forest products
company. His subsequent report to the Council, in February 1947, included a personal
opinion on the future value of the large stands of redwood trees which he had ascertained
As a result the Finance Committee set the offering price for its Hammond stock substan-
tially above the $212 per share received by those who sold in mid-1947. In 1956, following
a decade during which the company prospered, paid handsome dividends and split its
stock regularly, Hammond was acquired by the Georgia-Pacific Corporation at $310 per
share and the ANS, then in preparation for the celebration of its centennial, realized two
