BOSTON CITY COUNCILOR JACKSON AND AT&T WARN LOCAL

HIGH SCHOOLERS OF THE DANGERS OF DISTRACTED DRIVING
More than 300 Boston Latin Academy students
heard the powerful message of It Can Wait campaign
BOSTON, MASS., Oct. 14, 2015 AT&T* was joined Wednesday afternoon by Boston City
Councilor Tito Jackson at Boston Latin Academy to address the issue of a dangerous practice
smartphone driving distractions.
Launched by AT&T in 2010, the It Can Wait campaign aims to raise awareness about the
dangers of texting while driving. Wednesdays demonstration at Boston Latin Academy included
a powerful documentary presented by AT&T and a driving simulation program that shows drivers
first-hand how quickly things can change when you take your eyes off the road.
At the conclusion of the event, students signed a Pledge Board as a pledge of their commitment
to always put their phones down while driving.
As far as Im concerned, there is nothing more important than your safety and well-being. Think
about it..what is really so important on social media and texts that would cause you to risk
your life and the lives of others? The answer is nothing. It Can Wait Councilor Tito Jackson
Behind the wheel, everything can change in the blink of an eye. A post, a selfie, a text, a scroll,
an email one look can be all it takes, said Patricia Jacobs, president, AT&T New England
said. We applaud Councilor Jackson for his commitment to raising awareness with Boston
students about the dangers of all forms of distracted driving. And we were encouraged to see so
many students at Boston Latin Academy take the pledge to never text, email, selfie or even
glance at their phones while their cars are in motion. When it comes to distracted driving: It
really all can wait.

New research shows that 7-in-10 people engage in smartphone activities while driving.1 Its no
longer safe to assume that people are just texting from behind the wheel.
It Can Wait is a national movement urging drivers to visit www.ItCanWait.com, where they can
pledge to keep their eyes on the road, not on their phone, and share their pledge with others via
Twitter (#ItCanWait) and Facebook. What started as a campaign focused on not texting and
driving has now expanded its focus to the broader dangers of smartphone use behind the
wheel. Since its launch in 2010, the campaign has:

Helped drive awareness of the dangers of texting while driving to about 90% for all
audiences surveyed.

Inspired more than 6.5 million pledges not to text and drive.

Worked with departments of transportation in Texas, Kentucky and other states on

research that suggests a correlation between It Can Wait campaign activities and a
reduction in crashes.

Since AT&T launched the It Can Wait campaign in 2010, nearly 8 million people across the
country have taken the pledge to never text and drive.
