Relion 615 series

Motor protection and control

REM615

Compact and versatile solution for

industrial power distribution systems
REM615 is a dedicated motor protection and control IED,
perfectly aligned for protection, control, measurement
and supervision of asynchronous motors in the
manufacturing and process industry.
Application
REM615 has been designed to be the main protection for
asynchronous motors and their drives in manufacturing
and process industry. Typically, the motor IED is used with
circuit-breaker or contactor-controlled HV motors, and with
contactor-controlled, medium-sized and large LV motors
in a variety of drives. The drives include both continuously
and intermittently operated asynchronous motor drives with
varying load, such as pumps and conveyors, crushers and
choppers, mixers and agitators, fans and aerators.
REM615 is now available in a fourth standard configuration,
D, which includes three combi-sensor inputs for phase
currents (Rogowski coil) and voltages (voltage divider). The
other standard configurations use conventional current and
voltage instrument transformers.
To further improve the arc fault protection and minimize
the effects of an arc fault, 615 series IEDs can now also be
ordered with an optional I/O module equipped with highspeed outputs. Compared to conventional binary outputs, the
high-speed outputs decrease the operate time by four to six
milliseconds.
The standard configurations can be tailored to meet the
application requirements using the IEC61850-compliant
protection and control IED manager PCM600.
Human-machine interface (HMI)
As a member of the Relion product family, REM615 shares
the same Human Machine Interface (HMI) look and feel as the
other Relion IEDs. The location of a push button with a certain
function is always the same and the menu structure identical.
Consequently, once you become familiar with one Relion IED,
you can use them all.
The 615 series IEDs are equipped with a large graphical
display which can show customizable single-line diagrams
(SLD) with position indication for the circuit breaker,
disconnectors and the earthing switch. Also measured
values provided by the chosen standard configuration can
be displayed. The SLDs can be accessed not only locally,
but also via the web browser-based HMI. The SLDs can be
adjusted to meet user requirements using PCM600.

2 Motor protection and control | REM615

Standardized communication
REM615 fully supports the IEC61850 standard for
communication in substations, including fast GOOSE and
IEC61850-9-2LE. REM615 also supports both the parallel
redundancy protocol (PRP) and high-availability seamless
redundancy (HSR) protocols. In addition, the IED supports
the DNP3, IEC 60870-5-103 and Modbus protocols. By
using protocol adapter SPA-ZC 302, also Profibus DVP1 is
now supported. REM615 is able to use two communication
protocols simultaneously.
For redundant Ethernet communication, REM615 offers either
two optical or two galvanic Ethernet network interfaces. A
third port with a galvanic Ethernet network interface provides
connectivity of any other Ethernet devices to an IEC 61850
station bus inside a switchgear bay. The redundant Ethernet
solution can be built on the Ethernet-based IEC 61850,
Modbus and DNP3 protocols.
The implementation of the IEC 61850 standard in REM615
covers both vertical and horizontal communication, including
GOOSE messaging with both binary and analog signals,
together with parameter setting according to IEC 618508-1. Also process bus with sampled values of analog phase
voltages is supported. For time-critical applications, REM615
supports synchronization over Ethernet using SNTP or over
a separate bus using IRIG-B. For process-bus applications,
which require high-accuracy time synchronization,
IEEE1588 is used, with a time stamp resolution of only four
microseconds at the most. IEEE 1588 is supported in all
variants with a redundant Ethernet communication module.
615 series
REM615 is a member of ABBs Relion product family and its
615 protection and control series. The 615 series IEDs are
characterized by their compactness and withdrawable-unit
design. Re-engineered from the ground up, the 615 series has
been designed to unleash the full potential of the IEC61850
standard for communication and interoperability of substation
automation devices. In addition to REM615, the 615 series
includes the following IEDs:
REF615 Feeder protection and control
RED615 Line differential protection and control
RET615 Transformer protection and control
REU615 Voltage protection and control
REV615 Capacitor bank protection and control
