HOW TO WRITE

SYNOPSIS

ARCHITECTURE

UG

DISSERTATION

You can select any topic that could be based on works of an architect, history,
theory of design, specialized fields in architecture, technology, building
technology, film, art, anything and everything that has got some remote relation
to architecture, planning etc.
It is more of a study than a design based work
Do not look at very broad topics like lighting in architecture or vernacular
architecture or sustainable architecture.
Try to be clearer on what you want to do:
1. energy efficient lighting in office buildings
2. Influence of Vernacular Architecture on the works of Geoffrey Bawa
3. Sustainable urban waste management systems.
Philosophy of the topic: gives you the need of the study in the present day
context. In case of topic 1 as given above you may describe the present energy
scenario and how office buildings today working round the clock require lighting,
spend money on the same. How your study could help design energy efficient
lighting not only to reduce the electricity bill but also create a much better working
environment.
Aim of the study: it is what you want to finally achieve by doing this research. It
will definitely be related to the topic title. For example the aim for topic 2 could
be: To study and analyze influence of Srilankan vernacular architecture on the
works of Geoffrey Bawa
Objectives: objectives are smaller milestones on the way to your final goal that
is your aim. Here we are talking about the objectives of the topic you have
selected. For Example the objectives of your study if your topic is 3 could be
-

To understand the types of waste generated in urban areas

To study and analyse the present systems of waste management

To understand sustainability

To study sustainable waste management systems

Scope and Limitations: this defines what exactly you are doing in your topic for
example, say, in case of topic 2 the scope of the study could be those specific
buildings which show influence of vernacular architecture and not others. The
study of vernacular architecture in terms of form, spatial planning, materials etc
could also form a part of your scope.
Limitations are what restrict or limit your research. This could be anything
from the time frame to non-availability of authenticated data about some aspect
of your study.
Methodology: is how you are going to do your research. This could be in the
form of information you collect from books, papers published on the net or in
journals, through interviews, case studies, site visits etc. The method you adopt
to analyze the data you have collected could also be elaborated.
You can also include any literature reviews if you have started looking at any for
you topic.
