Terrier Runs Away With The Lead, Elected New Pet Mayor

By Cheryl Conway
he race for a new pet mayor was close
at first with four candidates reaching
600 votes, but when a terrier received
a last minute boost from supporters from
Mexico, she took the lead by a landslide.
Meet the first Pet Mayor of AllamuchyChardy, a soft-coated female Wheaton terrier
owned by Elizabeth Friday-Skoda. The
announcement of the winner and installation
ceremony was done by Allamuchy Township
Mayor Betty Schultheis on Sept. 19, during
the Allamuchy Day celebration.
Receiving 2,228 votes, Chardy has been
elected the new Pet Mayor of Allamuchy, a
one-year term. With her paw on The Good
Book, Chardy took the oath during her
swearing in with about 100 people and seven
animal candidates who attended the
announcement and inauguration.
Organized by six volunteers of the Dog
Park Committee, Elect Your Pet For Mayor
was a month long election held Aug. 1 to Sept
1, with online voting in an effort to raise
funds for a proposed dog park in town.
Residents were asked to nominate their pet
and then each vote was worth $1.
There were 13 candidates in total that ran
for pet mayor.
We had 10 dogs, one cat, a pig, and a
horse, says Roger Stamm of Allamuchy,
volunteer on the Dog Park Committee.
The vote range was from a low of 10
votes to the winning vote of 2,228, says
Stamm. The top nine candidates all had over
100 votes each. There were four candidates
that received over 600 votes. The winning
candidate received a substantial last minute
boost from supporters in New Mexico.

While nothing specific has been established in the new pet mayors role, organizers
have a few ideas in mind.
We hope is the mayor will be able to officiate at the ground-breaking and grand opening of the new dog park, says Stamm. If
there are additional opportunities where the
presence of the mayor would be beneficial,
we will see if she is available.
The Elect Your Pet For Mayor raised just
more than $6,000; and the amount raised to
date for the dog park is $7,600.
That is around 25 percent of the total
needed, says Stamm. It is a great start, but
we do have much more to do. We are working on a direct appeal campaign. There are a
number of ideas being considered. We are
always looking for the help and support,
meaning both volunteer fund raisers and fiscal support.
Volunteers are hopeful that the Elect Your
Pet For Mayor becomes an annual event in
town.
When we first discussed doing this event
we were concerned that we wouldnt find
candidates, explains Stamm. We are so
grateful to those 13 individuals that responded. They are the ones that established the
base and set the tone for this fun event. We
are now hearing from a number of individuals that next year Im entering my pet.
Nothing official to say at this time, but it is a
fun event and there seems to be support to do
it again.
If we do this again, we would like to see
a wider geographic area of participants,
Stamm continues. The park is open to the
surrounding communities, so candidates
from Hackettstown and other supporting

communities would be encouraged to be

involved.
Committee volunteers are thankful from
the support received by participants and local
businesses who acted as polling places.
We are very grateful to the businesses in
the area that allowed us to set up polling
places in their establishments, says Stamm.
Their support was a key part of our success.
We believe a dog park is in the best interest
of the community and surrounding area.
Stamm says, We are keenly aware of the
financial burdens of local government. That
is why we are taking a private approach to
raising the funds to open a park. We are asking the businesses of the area and the good
people of the area to support us in the effort
to open a park. We adopted a comment from
one of the candidates to be our slogan for the
next campaign, If we build it, they can run.
During our research we found many good

reasons for a community to have a dog park,

but somehow this statement rings true.
Since last year, a group of local volunteers
have been busy laying the groundwork for a
dog park.
They identified a one acre property across
from the Allamuchy Firehouse on Alphano
Rd. to be designated to be used for the future
Allamuchy Dog Park.
Committee members have estimated that
the dog park will cost at least $20,000. The
goal of the fundraiser was to raise enough
money for the dog park so taxes do not
increase.
Their hope is to have the park established
by the summer of 2016.
With the nearest dog park in Mt. Olive at
Turkey Brook Park, residents in Allamuchy
wanted closer vicinity to walk their dogs.

Purchase Gifts For Seniors And

Veterans This Holiday Season

ome Instead Senior Care of

Hunterdon and Warren County is
bringing Santa to the lives of seniors who may have been overlooked in the
hustle and bustle of the holiday season.
This year, Be A Santa To A Veteran, will
be a new twist to the program.
Senior Care has partnered with
Veterans Haven North, so for tags with an
American Flag, that is to purchase a gift for
a veteran. Veterans Haven North is a transitional housing program for homeless veterans.
Through the Be A Santa To A
Senior/Be A Santa To A Veteran program,
the office has teamed with local merchants,
schools and churches to provide presents to
seniors who otherwise might not receive a
gift. These participants will have a
Christmas tree or wreath with gift tags in
their establishments. Customers, students
and members will purchase gifts for those
seniors identified on the gift tags and return
them unwrapped to where they picked up
the tag. The gifts are collected and

wrapped by volunteers and then delivered

to each seniors home and Veterans Haven
North by Santa, Mrs. Claus and his Elves.
This program is a way that we can give
back to our community by providing gifts
to some of our most treasured residents,
says Tracy Fazzolari, owner of the
Hunterdon and Warren Counties franchises. Our hope is that receipt of these gifts
will help these seniors recapture some of
the excitement of their childhood. Be A
Santa To A Senior/Be A Santa To A
Veteran is a way to show our gratitude to
those older adults who have contributed so
much to our community. We hope to reach
out to many with this gesture of holiday
cheer and goodwill.
The program will run from Nov. 18
through Dec. 11. If there is deserving senior who might benefit from this program, is
struggling to pay for the basic necessities,
or an isolated senior who will be alone during the holiday season, contact Lucy at
lucy.hurley@homeinstead.com or call 908835-1400.

How To Get The Most Money For Their
Childrens College Education

ew Jersey parents suffering with

finding ways to pay for their childrens college education can finally
get the solutions to their college funding
problems.
Most families who earn $75,000 or more
and own a home assume they are not eligible for financial aid. However, most families
with income over $100,000 are actually eligible for some types of need based financial aid. They simply need to know how to
get their fair share.
According to Newell, there are several
easy things parents can do to substantially
increase the amount of money they get from
colleges. For example, There are several
schools that historically give better financial
aid packages than others, says Newell. If
families do proper income and asset planning before filling out the forms, they can
increase eligibility by thousands of dollars.
Newell offers a few simple tips to parents

with college funding problems. If a parent

has only half an hour to end their college
funding problems, I would suggest the following:
1. Make sure they do not over-value their
home on the financial aid forms
2. Try not to save money in the childs
name as it weighs more heavily than the parents savings
3. Dont be afraid to negotiate with a college for a better financial aid package.
Newell offers New Jersey parents with
college funding problems a free booklet that
explains the 9 most common college funding problems and solutions. Free copies will
be distributed at the seminar listed below.
Mr. Newell will be conducting a free
one-hour seminar for parents of college
bound high school juniors and seniors at the

George To The Rescue

By Cheryl Conway
onstructing, remodeling, renovating
and repairing homes, is a typical day
for general contractor Kevin Dorlon
of Long Valley.
But when an opportunity came knocking
on his door to remodel a home in
Independence Township for NBCs show,
George To The Rescue, Dorlons day
became much more exciting and extremely
busy, but well worth the cause. Make sure
to tune in to watch this episode scheduled to
air on Sat., Oct. 31, 9 a.m., 7 p.m. and 12:30
a.m. on WNBC.
George To The Rescue is a reality television show that features host George
Oliphant and his team of contractors and
designers who rescue the homes of deserving people. Dorlon was contacted by show
producers in August and asked if he wanted
to be in an upcoming home improvement
project nearby.
When he got the call from one of the
shows supervisors, Dorlon was told We
are shooting in two weeks; can you assemble your team? I said sure, he recalls.
Dorlon rounded up subcontractors
George Gailum of Gailum Brothers in Mt.

Olive to do the framing; S&R Mechanical in

Mt. Olive for plumbing and heating; and
Byrnes Electric in Mt. Olive. His company,
All Seasons General Contracting in Long
Valley is involved with the installation,
excavating, masonry, flooring and trim and
interior.
From Sept. 22 to Oct. 9, Dorlon and his
subcontractors were scheduled to be on
location to remodel a family home in
Independence Township. The crew consisted of 29 men working on a 10-day project to
add on to the living space of a colonial style
house.
The job entailed removing an existing
14x20 screened porch and replacing it with
an addition to be used as recreational space
as an extension to the family room.
We took that down, says Dorlon, and
installed proper footing and foundation to
create living space.
Alongside Dorlon and the other workers
was show host George Oliphant and his film
crew getting live footage and interviews for
an upcoming George To The Rescue
episode.
George to the Rescue typically features 12 families per year, with six episodes

that air in the fall and six in the spring, says

Andrew Bank, one of the shows supervisors.
In the past, George to the Rescue has
featured families from throughout the
nation. States include Arizona, California,
Illinois, Minnesota, North Carolina and

Texas. Due to proximity to its 30

Rockefeller Plaza headquarters, most of
projects take place in New York and New
Jersey, says Bank.

George To The Rescue...

continued from page 6

Road in Independence Twp., to be featured on the show.
Bank says this family was chosen because This is a
growing family of animal lovers (they recently rescued two
dogs from Adopt-a-Pet.com) facing home renovation challenges they wouldnt physically or financially be able to
tackle on their own. Their sunroom space was unused and
unsafe. We wanted to transform it into a multi-purpose room
the whole family (and their beloved pets) can enjoy.
Living in the four bedroom, three bathroom, 2,600 sq. ft.
house for exactly two years since Oct. 2013, Robin Lazar
decided to respond to an email in August from Adopt-a-Pet
as part of a Homes For Dogs Project. The email had notified
customers that one lucky family will be selected to be on
George To The Rescue.
Lazar recalls being contacted the next day as a possible
candidate. They came out to meet us; did a recording,
came back two or three more times; and then they came
back, on Fri., Sept. 4, and said We are here to rescue you.
Lazar was thrilled! We were shocked; we couldnt
believe it.
Any repairs and renovations on the home financially
would have been rough for her family, says Lazar. Any
project of this kind would have taken a few more years to
even get it done, she adds. Our back area is tiny; the porch
area is really bad. If we didnt take it down, it would fall
down. It was in bad shape.
Currently, Lazar financially supports her family working
in sales as an executive assistant. Two years ago, after hav-

ing their third child, Lazar was diagnosed with Peripartum

Cardiomyothapy, a health condition that weakens the heart.
Symptoms included shortness of breath, rapid pulse rate,
blood clot in the heart and an enlarged heart.
Itll never go away, says Lazar, but right now Im in a
good place; made a full recovery, and hopes that relapses
do not occur. I was one of the lucky ones, Lazar says,
adding that she almost died from it.
Lazars husband, Steven DeVaul, is a house husband,
retired from his profession. The couple care for their three
children, Caitlyn, 14; Brooke, 6; and Junior, two; and their
two adopted dogs.
When their 15-year old dog died in April, they checked
out Adopt-a-Pet and in May adopted a four-month old mixed
Feist and Shi Daschund named Ruby, now 10 months old;
then went back one week later to adopt Rubys sister, Riley.
The plan is to also invite Lazars brother to come live
with them when her mother, who is 80, can no longer take
care of her brother, who is unable to live on his own as he is
mentally challenged.
Lazar and her family were put up at an Extended Stay
during the renovation project so was unfamiliar to the logistics of the work being done.
Im very excited, she says. Whatever space they are
building, we will enjoy it as a family. Its a place we will all
gather; a nice comfortable space to enjoy ourselves.
Dorlon was more than happy to help out this wonderful
family, even though it fell during a very busy time for him.

Their timing is kind of crazy, says Dorlan while on

location for the show. The timing is really bad; Im up to
my elbows on a big project, building townhomes and condos at Bridgepoint Condos in Mt. Olive.
As the builder/owner of the condo project, Dorlon was in
full swing building on Route 46 in Hackettstown. The project started in July and consists of five units made up of two
and three bedrooms condos and one single bedroom condo.
Two units have already sold and three units are still available. Condos should be done by mid-April. Call 908-3104770 for more information.
With a wife and four kids- ages 18, 16, 14 and five, working full time on the condos and then taking 10 days to renovate the home for George To The Rescue has been a lot,
Dorlon admits, but well worth it.
Im not making money to do this, says Dorlon. I just
did this to help them. It makes me appreciate just how
blessed I really am. Although I work crazy hours, Id like to
spend more time with my family, Im blessed everyone is
healthy and happy.
Show supervisors selected Dorlon for the project because
of his great reputation.
Kevin Dorlon and All Seasons General Contracting
have tremendous online testimonial reviews and referrals,
says Banks. After speaking with Kevin (as well as his
architect, Doug Coleman), we knew wed be in good hands.
Kevin has a big heart and is committed to completing this
project with our team.

Outdoor Fall Fun For Family,

Friends & Fido

By Cara Connelly
all is here and is such a beautiful time
of year so, grab family, friends or Fido
and head outdoors for some fun
autumn enjoyment. It
is a great time of year
to go on long walks,
hikes or spend time in
a dog park.
Fall is probably the
perfect time of year to
be a dog. Its not too
hot or too cold, the air
is fresh and brisk and
dogs and people want
to spend more time outdoors. The cooler
temperatures will allow kids and Fido to
enjoy more time outdoors without becoming
overheated.
Its also the perfect season to take a
pooch along with family to a local pumpkin
patch or apple picking. Farms often offer
hay rides or corn mazes (not haunted- they
will probably spook younger kids or dogs)
and many permit dogs. Dont forget to be
respectful and clean up after dogs, bring

There are several local farms in the

Ort is a family owned and operated farm that
has been serving the community since 1916.
The 400 acre farm offers apple and pumpkin

a great time on the farm. Our weekends are
bustling with activities such as train, pony
and monster truck rides, friendly farm animals, picnic area and the ever popular apple
cannon. We also have food tents on the
weekend operated by local non-profits. Ort
Farms also participates in several farmers
markets throughout Northern N.J. and hosts
private parties.
Donaldson Farms has been a family
owned and operated farm since 1906.
Located on over 100 acres, the
Hackettstowm farm features seasonal fresh
fruits and vegetables, pumpkin picking,
berry picking, farm education, group tours,
private tours, birthday parties, corporate
events and fun for the whole family.
Donaldson Farms also offers seasonal
family fun with attractions including a corn
maze, farm animals, pick-your-own fields,
hayrides, pony rides and more.
Debbie Williams, market manager at
Donaldson Farms says the year round market is open and stocked with a full line of
fresh fruits, vegetables, fresh baked pies and
other delicious baked goods, dairy products,
syrups, local honey, our own jellies, jam,
sauce and salsa, gluten free products, and a

fantastic selection of local products from

local vendors neighbors and friends in our
community. Some of our selection includes
Arctic Meats, Byrne Dairy, Greenes Beans
Coffee, beautiful local gift boxes and baskets, John Deere toys and New Jersey
Audubon birdseed and feeders.
Fall is also the time to start prepping for
all the Halloween costume contests that the
kids and dogs will enter. Their costume
should be non-restrictive and safe. For pups
that arent crazy about costumes, how about
an autumn or scary themed bandana, color
or leash? They will feel comfortable and
still involved in all the family fun.
Remember the feeling what it felt like as
a care-free kid to jump in a pile of freshly
raked leaves. Help kids and dogs make those
memories too. Let everyone in on the yard
work and watch the family run through the
raked up leaf pile, throw a football around,
chase a ball or maybe even take the perfect
outdoor family picture and turn it into a holiday card.
Whatever fall family activity is chosen,
have fun!

When thousands of families get
together at the FCwalk that sends a powerful message to local families who have

Plus, its a great way to spend time with

Tips To Ensure Hound Halloween Fun With Less Howling

By Cara Connelly
alloween is a fun and festive time for
children and families but, for some
pets it can be a downright nightmare.
Here are some simple steps for taking the
stress and danger out of Halloween for a
hound.
Candy is for people, not pets. All kinds
of chocolate- especially baking and dark

chocolate can be dangerous, even lethal for

dogs. Symptoms of chocolate poisoning
may include vomiting, diarrhea, rapid
breathing, increased heart rate and seizures.
Halloween candies containing the artificial
sweetener xylitol can also be poisonous to
dogs.
Dont leave pets out in the yard on
Halloween. Vicious pranksters have been

known to tease, injure or steal pets on

Halloween night. Inexcusable certainly, but
preventable.
Keep pets in a quiet, confined area away
from the door and trick-or-treaters.
Doorbells ringing, doors constantly opening
and closing on Halloween coupled with
strangers dressed in unusual costumes and
yelling loudly for candy are all scary for
furry friends. Dogs are especially territorial
and may become anxious and growl at innocent trick-or-treaters. Putting a dog away
isnt being mean- it will provide them with
some quiet, ensure they wont run off and
keep them happy and safe.
Keep Halloween plants/decorations out
of reach. Pumpkins, corn and mums are
wonderful Halloween and Fall decorations
that look great but are not necessarily dog
friendly. Although, relatively nontoxic, such
plants can cause stomach upset and intestinal blockage if large pieces are ingested.
Dont keep lit pumpkins around your
dog. If a dog gets too close to a lit pumpkin,
they run the risk of burning themselves or
knocking things over and causing a fire.
Keep them out of reach.
Keep wires, electric light cords and
strings of lights out of reach. Wires, electric

cords and strings of lights all have shards of

glass and plastic in them. Chewed on, they
are dangerous and could even cause a possible life-threatening electric shock.
Costumes- love it or leave it. If you
decide that Fido needs a costume, make sure
its safe and not annoying. A costume should
not constrict movement, hearing, or the ability to breathe or bark. Try on the poochs
costume before the big night. If the dog
seems distressed, allergic or just plain doesnt like it, skip it.
ID for a dog. This is a good time to
remind dog owners the importance of having proper identification for a pooch. If a
dog should become lost, get spooked and
escape, having the proper identification will
increase the chances that they will be
returned. Make sure tag information is up to
date- better yet, get a microchip for Fido.
Halloween season can be a festive time
for the whole family, dogs included.
Costume parties and trick-or-treating make
much of October a fun time of the year.
Especially for a pooch, keep things more fun
than frightful. Dogs spook easily and can be
skittish when startled. Heres wishing all
humans and canines a happy and safe
Halloween 2015- no scaredy-cats allowed!

Children Dress Up To Help The Less Fortunate

By Jason Cohen
s children get ready to dress up for
Halloween in a few weeks, it is
important to remember that October
is breast cancer awareness month. Florham
Park resident Karen Casolaro, who underwent a double mastectomy in 2009, beat
breast cancer and now helps others overcome similar obstacles.
Casolaro was overwhelmed with support
from the community and in 2010, founded
Halos For Angels to help those less fortunate.
Halos For Angels, Inc. launched on Jan.
7, 2010, a 501(c) 3, a nonprofit charity that
helps community families in need due to
sudden tragedy. It offers temporary support
and services until the families are back on
their feet once again.
Halos For Angels, Inc. is for the people, Casolaro said. A place where one
goes to give and to receive through love. For
no one should go through sudden tragedy
without personal connection, support and
love of an angel.
Casolaro, who is a mother of five children- with children in Hanover Park High
and Ridgedale Middle in Florham Park- said
the support through her childrens friends

and families and the schools, was huge.

Hanover Park High School has been the
charitys main support system.
The high school has a display in their
lobby that honors volunteers, promotes
upcoming events, posts community outreach opportunities and volunteer signups.
Thomas Callanan, principal of Hanover
Park High was Halos For Angels, 2015
Honorary Outstanding Volunteer Angel; he
was presented an award at the charitys
annual Love Is In The Air gala. Also presented with awards that evening were:
Ginny Akhoury of Florham Park, Kaitlyn
Spada of Florham Park, Chuck Palmisano of
East Hanover and Melanie Tomiziki of
Tivoli Design in Madison.
Halos for Angels will hold Fright Factor,
which runs Oct. 2-31, Fridays through
Sundays. The attraction is a zombie-infested
walkthrough 3,000 square feet with kidfriendly tours, a treasure hunt, face painting,
pumpkin picking and design, festival games,
prizes, music, treats and more.
The fundraiser involves many volunteers,
which come from Florham Park, Madison,
Chatham, East Hanover, Roseland,
Livingston, West Orange, Whippany and as
far as Sparta and Newton. The organization

It has been a privilege and honor to have
been chosen to help serve our 81 recipients,
Casolaro said. This blessing has been and
continues to be supported and serviced by
our volunteers that give back through
community outreach efforts all for the
greater good. Extending support and services through compassion, determination, kindness, consideration, respectful, loyalty,
strong in faith, and most importantly, love.

designed by Casolaros husband, John and
built by the Morris County VoTech students.
He wanted to create a haunted house exclu-

sively for Halos For Angels. It originated as

a 900 square foot structure and three years
later, he transformed the structure into what
it is today, a 3,000 square foot pathway to
terror.
It has been a success year after year as it
grows bigger and better each year with
added scares that will haunt your every
move with mechanical surprises, Casolaro
said. Some of the brave make it out while
others remain year after year.
It is open Saturdays 3 p.m.-6 p.m.;
Sundays 1 p.m.-4 p.m. and it is located at
186 Ridgedale Ave., Florham Park. The
entrance fee is $10. For information, go to
www.halosforangelsinc.com.
