Terrier Runs Away With The Lead, Elected New Pet Mayor
By Cheryl Conway
he race for a new pet mayor was close
at first with four candidates reaching
600 votes, but when a terrier received
a last minute boost from supporters from
Mexico, she took the lead by a landslide.
Meet the first Pet Mayor of AllamuchyChardy, a soft-coated female Wheaton terrier
owned by Elizabeth Friday-Skoda. The
announcement of the winner and installation
ceremony was done by Allamuchy Township
Mayor Betty Schultheis on Sept. 19, during
the Allamuchy Day celebration.
Receiving 2,228 votes, Chardy has been
elected the new Pet Mayor of Allamuchy, a
one-year term. With her paw on The Good
Book, Chardy took the oath during her
swearing in with about 100 people and seven
animal candidates who attended the
announcement and inauguration.
Organized by six volunteers of the Dog
Park Committee, Elect Your Pet For Mayor
was a month long election held Aug. 1 to Sept
1, with online voting in an effort to raise
funds for a proposed dog park in town.
Residents were asked to nominate their pet
and then each vote was worth $1.
There were 13 candidates in total that ran
for pet mayor.
We had 10 dogs, one cat, a pig, and a
horse, says Roger Stamm of Allamuchy,
volunteer on the Dog Park Committee.
The vote range was from a low of 10
votes to the winning vote of 2,228, says
Stamm. The top nine candidates all had over
100 votes each. There were four candidates
that received over 600 votes. The winning
candidate received a substantial last minute
boost from supporters in New Mexico.
While nothing specific has been established in the new pet mayors role, organizers
have a few ideas in mind.
We hope is the mayor will be able to officiate at the ground-breaking and grand opening of the new dog park, says Stamm. If
there are additional opportunities where the
presence of the mayor would be beneficial,
we will see if she is available.
The Elect Your Pet For Mayor raised just
more than $6,000; and the amount raised to
date for the dog park is $7,600.
That is around 25 percent of the total
needed, says Stamm. It is a great start, but
we do have much more to do. We are working on a direct appeal campaign. There are a
number of ideas being considered. We are
always looking for the help and support,
meaning both volunteer fund raisers and fiscal support.
Volunteers are hopeful that the Elect Your
Pet For Mayor becomes an annual event in
town.
When we first discussed doing this event
we were concerned that we wouldnt find
candidates, explains Stamm. We are so
grateful to those 13 individuals that responded. They are the ones that established the
base and set the tone for this fun event. We
are now hearing from a number of individuals that next year Im entering my pet.
Nothing official to say at this time, but it is a
fun event and there seems to be support to do
it again.
If we do this again, we would like to see
a wider geographic area of participants,
Stamm continues. The park is open to the
surrounding communities, so candidates
from Hackettstown and other supporting

But when an opportunity came knocking
on his door to remodel a home in
Independence Township for NBCs show,
George To The Rescue, Dorlons day
became much more exciting and extremely
busy, but well worth the cause. Make sure

a.m. on WNBC.
George To The Rescue is a reality television show that features host George
Oliphant and his team of contractors and
designers who rescue the homes of deserving people. Dorlon was contacted by show
producers in August and asked if he wanted
to be in an upcoming home improvement
project nearby.
When he got the call from one of the
shows supervisors, Dorlon was told We
are shooting in two weeks; can you assemble your team? I said sure, he recalls.
