AB O UT SWARTL AN D

STARTING SMALL, THINKING BIG

The Swartland story began in 1951 with Oupa Hanekom
in the small town of Moorreesburg, a few wheat fields north
of Cape Town. He started supplying the local community
with hardware and electrical goods, but Oupas ambitions
lay far beyond the boundaries of Moorreesburg, and it
wasnt long before joinery became Swartlands specialty.
When Oupas son, Oom Jurgens, took over the reins,
he brought new ideas to the business. One of them was his
personal philosophy of continuous improvement.
Today, this desire to constantly improve is an integral
part of the Swartland culture. Its a place where traditional
values, such as hard work and pride in our craft, live in
harmony with new technology and inspired ideas.
The results speak for themselves windows and doors
crafted to perfection and manufactured to last.
Our ranges offer the leading products in their class:
Cape Culture Collection
Cape Culture offers an unrivalled 10 Year Guarantee*,
backed up by knowledgeable national service teams.

Our management systems have been approved by the

stringent South African Bureau of Standards and we are both
authorised and entitled to use the SABS ISO 9001 logo.

THINK LONG TERM

Think Long Term guides us in everything we do,
from how we make our products, to how we source our
raw materials, to the value we place on relationships.
Our commitment to increased energy efficiency and
environmental sustainability is deeply ingrained.
We pride ourselves on our integrity and insist that
environmental resources be utilised in a sustainable way.

IN THE FOREST
We give preference to responsible loggers.
We monitor the harvesting process on-site, because with
responsible management, wood is a renewable resource.

IN THE FACTORY
Our processes are focused on reducing waste.
Our innovative recycling system uses excess wood chips to
fuel the boilers that kiln-dry our wood, and our hi-tech
air-management system dramatically reduces emissions.

IN THE HOME
Our products are designed to improve your homes
thermal performance, keeping it as warm or cool as
you prefer. Weve recently introduced Double-Glazed
windows to the market. Independent tests have proved
them to be the most energy-efficient windows in South
Africa. The inclusion of composite gaskets on all windows
and selected doors also reduces temperature loss.
Wood is an extremely efficient insulator and its
carbon footprint is much smaller than other materials:
it takes 6.34 times the amount of energy to make an
aluminum window, 4.41 times to make a steel window
and 11.7 times to make a uPVC window* than to
make the equivalent window from treated wood.
Were fully committed to preserving our environment,
this process is on-going and continuously improving.
After all, we think long term.

DOUBLE-GLAZING
Swartland is proud to introduce our Double-Glazed
wooden windows to South Africa. Exclusive to
the Cape Culture Collection, this window is the most
energy-efficient tested window on the market.
Thicker wood sections, all-round composite gaskets
and two panes of glass with a space sandwiched
in between, ensure increased thermal insulation and
soundproofing, while imported German-engineered
locking systems provide enhanced security.
All of which makes double-glazing the unrivalled
choice for those who want the best in aesthetic appeal,
construction and environmental performance.

This DoubleGlazed window, with

Low E glass, has a
U-Value of 1.9

We knew we wanted double-glazing but

we werent sure whether to go with wood
or aluminium windows. Ultimately we found
that wood was better for the environment. Its
renewable and has a lower carbon footprint.
And it just looks better.

Composite gaskets
form an air-lock
between the frame
and casement
which improves
thermal insulation.

Thicker wood
sections improve
the thermal and
security properties
of the window.

Multiple locking
mechanism ensures
a tight fit and
enhances security.

Stainless steel,
thumb-release handle.
Available in white,
chrome and gold finish.

Double glazing
comprises of two
panes of glass,
separated by
dehydrated air.

Friction hinge
specially designed
to handle the extra
glass and thicker
window frame.

PRE-SEALED, PRE-GLAZED
Our new pre-sealed, pre-glazed products are designed
to make your life easier by saving you time and money.
To increase their ability to withstand the elements they
are sealed with our unique sealant, Maxicare. This makes
them more water repellent and decay resistant, and helps
protect the wood from fungal attack and UV radiation.
To ensure these windows stand the test of time, we use
solid brass handles and stainless steel hinges.

GLAZING
These windows are available in different glazing
configurations, from 3 6mm clear glass, 6.38mm
laminated, toughened glass and 4mm Obscure glass.

WHAT ARE U-VALUES?

U-value is the rate at which heat is transmitted through
the arrangement of windows and doors in a building. It takes
into account all the components that make up the window or
door, such as the frame, the space between the two panes and
the glass itself. Glass coatings and the type of gas used between
the glass panes also form part of the U-value calculation.
Each glazing option has a different U-value and each
delivers different levels of thermal performance.
Some options are more resistant to impact, while others
offer better thermal and sound insulation.
For information on the glazing combinations that will
best suit your needs, please contact us on 086 110 2425.

HOW TO ORDER
Our pre-sealed, pre-glazed option is available
on all Cape Culture products, and can be ordered
through all leading builders merchants.
When ordering please specify a Maxicare colour.

Were very proud that our products

and systems are leading the way in energy
efficiency and sustainable design.
Were continuously striving to improve our
environmental performance, our process
is on-going and were committed to it.

A big factor in our choice of windows was

that Swartland has been around for so long.

MAINTENANCE RECOMMENDATIONS
Timber is a natural product. Whilst we try to ensure
that our timber has been properly kiln-dried, it is still
subject to movement. This is due to normal fluctuations
in humidity and temperature. Its thus very important
to protect your wooden windows and doors against the
elements by sealing them regularly.

THINKING LONG TERM

The Swartland story began in 1951 with Oupa Hanekom in
the small town of Moorreesburg, a few wheat fields north of
Cape Town. He started supplying the local community with
hardware and electrical goods, but Oupas ambitions lay far
beyond the boundaries of Moorreesburg, and it wasnt long
before joinery became Swartlands specialty.
When Oupas son, Oom Jurgens, took over the reins,
he brought new ideas to the business. One of them was his
personal philosophy of continuous improvement.
Today under the leadership of the third generation of Hanekom,
Jurie, James and Hans, this desire to constantly improve is an
integral part of the Swartland culture. Its a place where
traditional values, such as hard work and pride, live in harmony
with new technology and inspired ideas.
The results speak for themselves windows and doors crafted
to perfection and manufactured to last. All ranges offer the leading
products in their class all backed up by knowledgeable
national service teams.
