the house

Instructor: Brian Mackay- Lyons

This project looked at urbanization, habitation and building structure of a house. This house is located on a
hypothical site called the street, which consists of two rows of row housing with green space behind each row;
this house is located on one end of the row. Before the design process started it was necessary to collaborate with
the other students designing houses on the street to come up with urbanization rules. This design consists of a
basement and street level commercial space and two levels above of residential.

the pavilion
Instructor: Kevin Reid

With this project we were asked to design a pavilion that would be located on a boulevard on the Dalhousie
Campus. The requirement for this pavilion was a private space for individuals as well as groups to study.
The proposed pavilion had two buildings, a large one for individual study and a smaller one for group study
that creates a path way through their intersection. The design also consists of four service cores that house
administration, bathrooms, coffee shops, fire places and storage.

draw a sphere
Instructor: Susan Molesky

We were given a piece of copper with a hole cut in the middle and asked to construct a sphere with plaster by
rolling semi harden plaster through the hole. A device to hold the sphere was also constructed. We were also
required to draw the sphere with light and shadow along with orthographic drawings. The inspiration behind the
holding device was an old puzzle that was no longer used and I wanted to create a nest like shape, to resemble a
birds nest with an egg in it.

shifting grounds
Instructor: Susan Molesky

We were asked to create three spaces based on thresholds and movement. I created one main stair case with
other stair cases branching off randomly creating the three spaces. The second part of this assignment was to
create a series of one point and two point perspective drawings.

case study: casa rudin

Instructor: Brian Mackay-Lyons

I was selected to do a case study on Casa Rudin in Leymen by Herzog and de Meuron. The project required us
to research the building, draw plans, draw interpretive drawings (see bottom right, Public vs. Private) and create
an addition that makes sense to the existing building. The addition that I added on was a smaller version of the
building itself to act as a shed.

color, space and rhythm

Instructor: Susan Molesky

The purpose of this project was to investigate space and color through modeling and drawing. I created three
squares that all interconnected with each other. I used the three primary colors, one in each square leaving some
white space and introduced the same color ribbon around the edges. When the model is put in natural light the
colors mix together on the white space to create different colors. I used different mediums for the drawings such
as watercolor, acrylic, colored pencil and ribbon.

the room

Instructor: Rayleen Hill

Our project was to design a small structure with only a few requirements. Our structure had to have a fire place,
a place to sleep or relax and a place to read or write. The theme of my room is a green house with a garden
outside the front door.

structural bay

Instructor: Roland Hudson

In groups of 5 and 6 we were asked to create a structural bay that spanned 3m at a 1:5 scale. We were allowed to
use any material that our group wanted however no member could be more the 40cm in length. At the end of the
week we tested each bay to see how much weight it could hold before it would break. When judging the bay the
cost and the weight of the structure also was a factor. My group created an arch structure out of 2L pop bottles
and it held the second most weight in the class at close to 500 pounds.

Before coming to architect school I took many art classes. I have experimented with many different mediums and
my previous work can be seen on this page as well as other pages throughout my portfolio.
