Intelliforce Circulating Valve

Features

No pressure surges

Better annular-velocity management

Accurate placement of viscous/

chemical pills

Effective flow splitting

Full-bore access

Prevents high concentration of LostCirculation Material (LCM) from

entering the Bottomhole Assembly
(BHA)
Can activate up to 40 times during a
single run

Benefits

No pressure surges that could

possibly damage the formation or
sensitive BHA components
Permits increased annular velocity in
large-diameter annuli to enhance hole
cleaning or displacement efficiency
Less risk of stuck pipe as a result of
continuous hole cleaning
Savings in rig time from accurate
placement of viscous/chemical pills
No wellbore restriction, even with
multiple tools of the same or different
sizes
Permits coiled tubing or wireline
intervention
Avoids plugging bottomhole assembly
and bit
Rig time savings from multiple
activation capability

The Intelliforce Circulating Valve

(ICCV), from M-I SWACO*
Wellbore Productivity*, activates
via Radio Frequency Identification
(RFID) technology and is used in
openhole drilling and in cased or
openhole precompletion wellboredisplacement applications.
How It Works

The Intelliforce CCV is operated by introducing a small RFID

activation tag into the well fluid and pumping it down through the
tool. The tag, a passive device without an integral power source,
consists of a small antenna and an electronic chip encapsulated
in a glass casing. Programmed at the surface via a hand-held
computer, each tag can be individually encoded to initiate a
specific operation (e.g., open or closing ports) for a specific tool.
The ICCV contains an antenna, a circuit board, batteries, a motor
and a pump. When the RFID tag passes the antenna in the tool,
it receives a small charge and transmits its code to the tool. The
electronics decode the instruction and the motor/pump pressures
up hydraulic fluid which moves a sleeve to open or close the ports.
The tool is designed to activate up to 40 times in one trip, with the
total number of cycles limited only by battery life.

Advantages
Rather than being activated by large-diameter balls, the Intelliforce CCV is operated by small
RFID tags about the size of a grain of rice. There is no need to pressure up the drillstring to
activate the tool. There is no concern about blocking the primary circulating path through
the drillstring, so wireline or coiled-tubing interventions are possible. One tag can be coded
with multiple sequential opening/closing instructions. The tool can be opened and closed
at predetermined intervals (e.g., to periodically boost annular velocity) by dropping one
activation tag. The ICCV can be opened completely or partially to allow some flow to pass
through the BHA.
Well fluid provides efficient conveyance of the small activation tag, enabling a simple
calculation of when the tool will open or close, based on pump strokes. The ICCV is
hydraulically locked either open or closed. It is not affected by high flow rates, and it is even
possible to reverse-circulate through the tool when it is open. The tool can be configured
with an RFID-activated BHA shut-off device that can be operated using the same activation
tag.
