DEAR ADVENTURER
I am thrilled to invite you to join me on this fascinating adventure that takes us from
the splendors of Delhi to the Kashmiri moonscapes of Ladakh and the princely states of
the Western Himalayas. A tapestry of spectacular natural wonders and exquisite cultural
landmarks, this is a true expedition.

These are ancient, mystical lands of soaring spaces and sacred places, where landscape dictates
livelihood and where history has inscribed long and complex chapters. From ancient moun-
taintop monasteries, including fabled Lamayuru, to tidy British hill stations… from bustling
and colorful bazaars to the serene Tibetan Buddhist complex of McLeod Ganj… experience
the richness of the Buddhist, Hindu, and Sikh religions and the variety of birds and wildlife
that inhabit pine and cedar forests and verdant valleys.

Amazing Delhi makes for a perfect introduction to India’s infinite array of contrasts and
juxtapositions. Energetic bazaars, exquisite mosques, lavish palaces, and superb examples
of both British Raj and Mughal architecture are part of the sensory feast. From this kalei-
doscopic world, we fly to Leh, the capital of Ladakh, in the Trans-Himalaya region, and
a former commercial hub on the Asian Silk Road. Here, a sparse, majestic, and ultimately
peaceful world of soaring peaks and deep valleys greets visitors who, like us, come for the
monasteries and vistas that defy scale. We explore Hemis, Tikse, and Shay—ancient places
of spiritual pilgrimage. The architectural details, panoramic valley views, and sunsets are
photographic highlights. We also visit Lamayuru Monastery, the oldest spiritual center
in Ladakh with its legendary scenic backdrop.

In Palampur we witness the traditional Tara puja ceremony, hosted by nuns from the local
Dolma Ling Nunnery, and visit a Tibetan Children’s Village. The former British hill station
of McLeod Ganj has been the home of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Tibetan Buddhist
refugees since 1960 and we take time to explore the Tibetan complex. Lovely Pragpur,
set among rolling hills, is home to dozens of elegant mansions built by venerable clans who
favored the cool setting amid panoramic hills.

We are very excited to be in the gracious town of Shimla, once the summer capital of India
under British rule, during the Dussehera Festival, which celebrates the victory of revered
Rama over the demon, Ravana. Songs, dances, and theatrical reenactments are all part of
this dazzling, and authentic, celebration.

Having spent much of the past thirty years in this area of the world, I am excited to return
and share with you my knowledge of Himalayan culture and history. Please join me in these

Arrive Delhi late in the evening and transfer
to the Taj Palace hotel for the night.
DAY 3
DELHI
After a morning at leisure and an early lunch,
we explore historic and energetic Delhi.
In Old Delhi, narrow lanes twist and turn
between leaning houses, revealing a slice of
daily life around every corner. We see the
magnificent Red Fort and the Jama Mosque
with its tapering minarets. New Delhi is a city
of wide boulevards and ordered open spaces.
We visit the Raj Ghat, the cremation site of
Mahatma Gandhi; the India Gate; and the
exquisite Islamic 13th-century brick minaret,
Qutub Minar. We return to the Taj Palace for
dinner and overnight.
DAY 4
DELHI / LEH, LADAKH
Early this morning we fly to Leh, the capital
of Ladakh in the Kashmir state, and once
a major stop on the Asian Silk Road.
Numerous castles, Buddhist temples, and
stupas speak of power and importance that
endured millennia; rising behind the town
is the 17th-century nine-story palace consid-
ered a masterpiece of Tibetan architecture.
Our first day is spent acclimating to the
high altitude. The next two nights are at
the Grand Dragon Hotel.
DAY 5
LEH ARE
Today we visit the superb
monasteries that punctuate
the isolated hills surrounding
Leh. Hemis, built in 1630, and
tucked into a spectacular valley,
houses a copper statue of Buddha,
a gem-studded chorten (Tibetan for
stupa), and sacred thankas (paintings
on cloth). After lunch we continue on to
beautiful Tikse, the home of 80 monks. Vistas
of the Indus Valley below are breathtaking.
The Shay Palace, the summer home of the
Raja of Leh, is famous for its huge copper-gilt
Buddha statue.
DAY 6
LEH / ALCHI
We follow the Indus River this morning,
enveloped by some of the most spectacular
scenery in the Himalayas, and make a short
detour to visit the monastery of Likir, built in
1065. We arrive in the picturesque village of
Alchi for a late lunch, then explore its ancient

translator. The views of evening sunsets here
are among the most spectacular in Ladakh.
We spend the night at the Alchi Resort.
DAY 7
ALCHI / LAMAYURU / LEH
We drive to Lamayuru Monastery today,
the oldest spiritual center in Ladakh, set
against its famous “moonscape”—a vast swath
of windswept high-mountain desert that

An emerald jewel surrounded by soaring snow-capped mountains, glacier-fed rivers, and

pine forests, Kashmir has been a chosen place of retreat and recreation from the Mughal
emperors to the Raj. We hope you will join us after your journey through the cultural
tapestry of the Western Himalayas for three days in this natural and spiritual paradise
as we discover the wonders surrounding Srinagar and magical Lake Dal.

In the late 16th century, Mughal princes descended into this gentle valley from their
winter palaces in the foothills and created exquisite gardens. When the British first
arrived the regional maharajah denied them the right to land ownership, so they
creatively established themselves in high Victorian style—in clusters of lavish house-
boats on the tranquil waters of Lake Dal, with all the urban conveniences of Srinagar
accessible along the shores.
This tradition of accommodation continues today and a highlight of our journey is our
stay in deluxe houseboats, our base for daily explorations. We travel the lake by hand-
rowed wooden boats—shikara—which have long been a cultural symbol of the Kashmir,
visiting the photogenic floating markets where vendors softly paddle their over-laden
boats, offering both necessities and luxuries: fresh fruit, leather goods, woolens, deco-
rated boxes, silks, teas, and flowers. We also visit the fabled Mughal Gardens set against
breathtaking panoramas of mountain ranges and the lake. Here terraced lawns meet
the shores of Lake Dal, some cut by flowing canals lined with polished stones, others
shaded by leafy trees, and all of them a showcase of bright flowerbeds.

TERMS & CONDITIONS
1. RESERVATIONS: 25% of the expedition fare,
along with a completed and signed Reservation Form,
will reserve a place for you on this Zegrahm Holdings
LLC, d/b/a Eco-Expeditions (ECO), program. The
balance of the expedition fare is due 120 days prior to
departure. Air fare is also due at this time. All prices
are quoted in U.S. dollars and must be paid in U.S.
dollars. Credit cards accepted for deposit only.
2. CANCELLATION AND REFUND POLICY:
Notification of cancellation of this program and any
independent travel arrangements must be received in
writing by ECO. At the time we receive your written
cancellation, the following penalties will apply:
• 120 or more days prior to departure:
$500 per person
• 60 through 119 days prior to departure:
50% of expedition fare
• 59 days prior to departure through day of departure:
100% of expedition fare
Some air fare may be nonrefundable. Once an expedi-
tion has departed, there will be no refunds from ECO
for any unused portions of the trip. The above policy
also applies to all extensions and independent travel
arrangements made in conjunction with this program.
3. TRIP CANCELLATION AND INTERRUPTION
INSURANCE: We strongly advise that all travelers
purchase trip cancellation and interruption insurance
as protection against an emergency that may force
you to cancel or leave from an expedition while it is
in progress. A brochure describing coverage will be
sent to you upon receipt of your reservation.
4. SHARE POLICY: Accommodations on all ECO
programs are based on double occupancy. If you are
traveling alone and wish to share accommodations, a
roommate will be assigned to you whenever possible.
When pairing roommates, we will always pair partici-
pants of the same sex. All shared accommodations
are nonsmoking. Upon booking you will be required
to pay a Single Supplement, if we are able to pair you
with a roommate the supplement will be refunded.
Please note that single accommodations are limited
and cannot be guaranteed throughout.
5. MEDICAL INFORMATION: Participation on
an ECO program requires that you be in generally
good health. It is essential that persons with any
medical problems and related dietary restrictions
make them known to us well before departure. We
can counsel you on whether the expedition you have
selected is appropriate for you.
The tour leader has the right to disqualify any
participant at any time during the tour if he/she feels
the participant is physically incapable and/or if a
participant’s continued participation will jeopardize
either the individual involved or the group. There will
be no refund given under these circumstances.
6. LUGGAGE RESTRICTIONS: Luggage size
and weight limitations for both checked and carry-on
luggage, imposed by the airlines or as an operational
requirement due to type of aircraft, will apply for
flights to/from/within this program. Specifications
will be provided with pre-departure materials.
7. FUEL COST INCREASES AND CURRENCY
FLUCTUATION: In order to keep rates as low as
possible, we do not build into the trip fare an allow-
ance to cover possible increases from fuel costs or

may occur and currencies do fluctuate around the
world, it may be necessary for us to initiate a rate
surcharge at any time before departure if there are
exceptional cost increases beyond our control.
8. ITINERARY CHANGES & TRIP DELAY:
Itineraries are based on information available at the
time of printing and are subject to change. ECO
reserves the right to change a program’s dates, staff,
itineraries, or accommodations as conditions warrant.
If a trip must be delayed, or the itinerary changed due
to bad weather, road conditions, transportation delays,
airline schedules, government intervention, sickness,
or any other contingency for which ECO or its agents
cannot make provision, the cost of delays or changes
is not included.
9. ITINERARY CANCELLATION: ECO reserves
the right to cancel an itinerary before departure for any
reason whatsoever, including too few participants or
logistical problems such as strikes, wars, acts of God,
or any other circumstances that may make operation
of the trip inadvisable. All trip payments received will
be promptly refunded, and this refund will be the
limit of ECO’s liability. ECO is not responsible for any
expenses incurred by trip members in preparing for
the trip, including nonrefundable or penalty-carrying
airline tickets, special clothing, visa or passport fees,
or other trip-related expenses.
10. PARTICIPATION: ECO reserves the right
to decline to accept any individual as an expedition
member for any reason whatsoever.
11. LIMITATIONS OF LIABILIT Y: This section
defines ECO’s responsibility with respect to all of our
trips, including extensions and independent arrange-
ments. Please read it carefully.

that they act only as the agent for the owners, contrac-
tors, and suppliers providing means of transportation
and/or all other related travel services and assume no
responsibility howsoever caused for injury, loss, or
damage to person or property in connection with any
service resulting directly from: acts of God, detention,
annoyance, delays, expenses arising from quarantine,
strikes, thefts, pilferage, force majeure, failure of any
means of conveyance to arrive or depart as scheduled,
civil disturbances, terrorism, government restrictions
or regulations, and discrepancies or changes in
transit or hotel services over which it has no control.
Reasonable changes in the itinerary may be made
where deemed advisable for the comfort and well-being
of the passengers.
As described in item 7 above, all prices are subject
to change.
As described in item 9 above, in the event that an
expedition must be cancelled, ECO is not responsible
for any personal expenses incurred by trip members
in preparing for the program.
On advancement of deposit to ECO, the depositor
acknowledges that he/she has read and understands
the above recited terms and conditions, and agrees
to be bound by them.
