Identifying Solutions of Systems

Objective: At the end of the lesson, you will be able to determine if an ordered pair is a solution
to a system of equations and explain your reasoning.
If an ordered pair is a solution to a system, it must ____________________ both _________________ in the system
of equations.
1.

Tell whether the ordered pair (1, 9) is a solution to {

Step 1: Substitute the ordered pair into the first equation to determine if it is a solution to the equation.
x =______
y =______

____ + ____ = 10
____ = 10
True/False ?

If the point makes the

1st equation true, move
to the next equation. If
it makes the equation
false, then it is not a
solution to the system.

Should you move on? _____

If so, continue here.
Step 2: Substitute the same ordered pair into the second equation and determine if it is a solution to the equation.

____= 12
True/False?
Does the ordered pair (1, 9) make both equations in the system true? _________

2.

Tell whether the ordered pair (2, -3) is a solution to {

Step 1: Substitute (___, ____) into the first equation.

Does (2, -3 ) make the equation true?

Do we move on?
If so, continue below on your own.

Solving a system of linear equations by graphing.

Objective: At the end of this lesson, you will be able to graph a system of equations and identify
the solution of the system from the graph.
Graphing Linear Equations:
When an equation is in slope-intercept form, we can use the y-intercept and slope to graph the equation.
If the equation is in standard form, we can find the x and y intercepts and use them to graph the equation.
If the equation is in neither, slope-intercept or standard forms, you will have to move some of the terms around to
get the equation into the form you prefer.
Solve each system by graphing. Check your answer.
3.

Step 1: Both equations are in slope-intercept form.

Equation 1: Slope_______ Rise _____ Run______ y-intercept_______
Equation 2: Slope_______ Rise _____ Run______ y-intercept_______

Step 2: Graph both equations on the same coordinate plane (Use the slope/y intercept method of graphing).
Do the lines intersect?__________
How many times? __________
The coordinates of the point of intersection
are (_____, _____).
Since, all points on are solutions to the
lines equation, the intersection point of the
two lines are solutions to both equations.
Therefore, the solution to the system is the
point of intersection of the two lines.
Solution (_____,_____)
Use substitution to check your solution.

4.

Step 1: Graph the first equation.

What form is the equation in? _______________________
Rise____ Run_____ Slope_________ y intercept__________
Step 2. Graph the second equation.
What form is the second equation in? _____________________
x-intercept__________ y-intercept____________
Use the intercepts to graph the second equation.
Step 3: Find the solution (answers questions in the box on the right).

Do the lines intersect?__________

How many times? __________
The coordinates of the point of intersection
are (_____, _____).

Solution (_____,_____)
Use substitution to check your solution.
