4.
5.

Write the general 3-D heat conduction equation in cylindrical coordinates.

Define efficiency and effectiveness of the fin.
What is lumped heat capacity analysis?
Differentiate between Natural & Forced convection.
Define thermal boundary layer thickness.

Part B - (2 x 16, 1 x 8 = 40)

6 (a) A furnace wall is made up of three layers of thicknesses 25 cm, 10 cm and 15 cm

with thermal conductivities of 1.65, k and 9.2 W/mK respectively. The inside is exposed to
gases at 1250oC with a convection coefficient of 25 W/m 2C and the inside surface is at
1100oC, the outside surface is exposed to air at 25 oC with convection coefficient of

12

W/m2K. Determine (i) The unknown thermal conductivity (ii) The overall heat transfer
coefficient (iii) All the surface temperatures.

(4+6+6)
Or

(b) (i) Derive an expression for temperature distribution and heat transfer due to
conduction (one dimensional steady state) in a hollow cylinder.

(12)

(ii) A hollow sphere of pure iron contains a liquid chemical mixture which releases

30

kW of energy. The inner diameter and outer diameter of the sphere are 15 cm and 30 cm
respectively. If the outside surface temperature of the sphere is 40 oC, determine the
temperature at a location 2.5 cm from the outer surface. Take k = 70 W/mK..

(4)

7 (a)(i) A steel rod (k = 30 W/m oC), 10 mm in diameter and 50 mm long, with an insulated
end, is to be used as a spine. It is exposed to surroundings with a temperature of 65 oC
and a heat transfer coefficient of 50 W/m oC. The temperature at the base of the fin is 98 oC.

Determine (i) the heat dissipation (ii) the fin efficiency and (iii) the temperature at the edge
of the spine.

(4+3+3)

(ii) A plane wall 20 cm thickness generates heat at the rate of 5 x 10 4 W/m3 when an
electric current is passed through it. The convective heat transfer coefficient between each
face of the wall and the ambient air is 60 W/m 2K. Determine
The surface temperature

(3)

The maximum temperature in the wall. Assume ambient air temperature to be 25C and
the thermal conductivity of the wall material to be 16 W/mK.

(3)

Or
(b)(i) Obtain an expression for the temperature profile of an infinitely long fin of uniform
cross section from basic principles and hence calculate the heat transfer by fin. (12)
(ii) Explain briefly the concept of critical thickness of insulation and state any two
applications of the same.

(4)

8(a) A person found dead at 5 P.M in a room whose temperature is 20 oC. The temperature
of the body is 230C when found and h = 8 W/m 2oC. Modeling the body as 30 cm diameter,
1.7 m length. Estimate the time of death of the person. Take

k = 0.608 W / m oC,

density = 1000 kg/m3, Cp = 4180 J/kgoC. Assume the person to have been healthy when
he died with body temperature of 37oC. (Though lumped system analysis is not applicable,
you can still use it to get a rough estimate of time of death.)

(8)

Or
(b) a large slab of aluminium at a uniform temperature of 200 oC suddenly has its surface
temperature lowered to 70oC. Calculate the time required for the temperature to reach
120oC at a depth of 4 cm. also find the total heat removed from the slab per unit surface
area during this time. Take diffusivity = 8.4 x 10-5 m2/s. and k = 215 W/mK.
