Interaction

Time

T greets ss and takes attendance

T informs ss about objective(s) of the lesson
The teacher asks the Ss whether they know anything
about Australia's history, wildlife or culture. Then he
tells them to look at the pictures of the Australian
landscape and asks what ss can tell about Australia on
the basis of the pictures and what impression they give.
The Ss are to read the sentences extracted from the text
and tell what the text is going to be about on the basis
of the sentences (eg. culture, history, wildlife)
The Ss are to put the extracted sentences back into the
text while reading. Then the teacher asks them to give
the answers and justify their choice on the basis of
what precedes and follows the inserted sentences.
The Ss answer the questions concerning looking for the
detailed information in the text. There are 6 such
questions, and the teacher divides the class into the
groups of six. Each person in the group is assigned one
question. Then the teacher gives the Ss 20 sec to find
the answer to the question in the text. Then they have
to tell their answer to other Ss in the group and the
teacher asks each person in the group a question
different from the assigned one. If all the people in the
group are able to answer the question, the group wins.

PROCEDURE(S)
(a brief description of an activity)

The teacher asks the Ss to tell what they remember

TSs
about Australia from the text. This may be done as a
competitive game. Each S is to give one new fact about
Australia. The S who cannot recall anything is out.
LESSON
EVALUATION
(self-evaluation)

I suppose that after this lesson, the Ss would be able to

tell sth about Australia, especially that they had no
problems with the groupwork activity and in fact their
recall of the information provided by the text was
better than I expected in the last activity. In the second
pre-reading task I should have though about some
better ways of eliciting from the Ss the expected
phrases, as at the beginning they were a little bit
confused when I asked them what the text is going to
be about. Perhaps, providing them with a list of
possible topics would be a good prompt.
