originals, Romero said. We

picked stuff that was really full
of energy ... to kind of get the
party started.
That was traditional bluegrass music, Townsley said.
Both said they were having fun at the event, though
Romero joked that she was
really only there for the Bayou
Teche beer. The duo went off
in search of food and drink
after their set, but were worried there wouldnt be any left.
Roughly 700 people showed up
for the sold-out Arts and Crabs
Festival, and participants were
hard-pressed to dish out food as
fast as people arrived to take it.
Ashli Waldrep, executive
director of the arts council,
said she was pleased with the
turnout.
I think the event is wildly
successful, she said. We have

yall, he said of his creation.
Theres healing in my food.
Its in the energy. When you
feel that kind of energy, you
cant help but pass it on in your
food. Its all about love, extending that love from one end of
the hall to the other.
No actual energy readings
were taken, but the growing
number of slurped-clean sample cups indicated that people
were feeling pretty enthusiastic about his dish.
After they finished sampling, attendees were given a
chance to vote for their favorite
dish by dropping a tip in the
chef s jar, but there seemed
to be general agreement, that
everyone involved in the event
deserved a hand.
Its just a lot of fun, said
Richarda Mesh of Mother
Earth Designs. The community comes together. The food
is very unique, you never know
what theyll have and the
same goes for the music.

a new venue, were very happy

to work with the staff at Burton. We had a larger art market
this year than weve ever had,
and this year we had a live auction with a George Rodrigue
print.
The auction included a
number of products donated by
local sponsors, as well as weekend getaways, golf packages
and childrens party packages.
There was also a raffle for
items from local artists, some
of whom were present in the
bustling art market.
Mandy Schof of Schofgirl
was there with a selection of
jewelry pieces crafted from
semiprecious stones and ammonite fossils. She said it was
her third time selling at the
festival, which she travels to
each year from Baton Rouge.
I love it. I love the arts
community, she said. To be
part of it, to be around people
who appreciate art its just
wonderful. People who love
art, theyre outside the regular
crowd.
Of course, though the art
was a feast for the eyes, there
was also a great deal of enthusiasm for the food. The reddraped tables filled fast as attendees collected their samples
of local crab dishes and the
Bayou Teche beer selected to
accompany them. The sinners
took over the stage with their
mix of rock and swamp pop as
everyone tucked into a variety
of crab-filled treats.
David Johns, better known
as Spiceman, had one of the
most unusual dishes at the festival. His watermelon rind crab
etouffee with sugar cane sauce
drew exclamations of surprise
from several attendees.
This is one of a kind. This
