HP offers outstanding image quality on a wide variety of media, from plain
12-COLOR PIGMENT INK SYSTEM: Canon image quality may not

The HP Designjet Z2100 Photo Printer series achieves consistent and accurate
color with its unique embedded spectrophotometer:
Accurate color regardless of the media used thanks to the 20 min automatic
custom ICC profile creation and installation tool. When using 3rd party media,
Canon users may need to buy an external profile (about $100), or profile the
media with an external spectrophotometer.
Consistent color from media to media thanks to HP Advanced Closed-Loop
Color Calibration and automatic media calibration personalized for each
media vs. Canon uses a densitometer that creates a generic calibration
independent of the media.
HP color management can be used in any media with any print mode and
allows Windows and Mac previews vs. Canon has Kyuanos color
management, which allows image reproduction in different lighting
environments, regardless of lighting conditions or print media. Canon Kyuanos
color matching engine can only be used under Windows on few media in two
print modes; it requires an Eye-One to gather color information about the
viewing light (other tools might be supported in the future), otherwise user
needs to set the tool directly by entering values after visual inspection of a
printed pattern.
All these HP calibration tools and many more functionalities are easily
launched through the HP Color Center, included in the HP Easy Printer Care
tool which is included in the box at no additional cost.
Also, HP has a broad gamut coverage: over 80% PANTONE coverage,
and full compliance with prepress standards: SWOP, ISO, GRACOL,
EUROSCALE, TOYO, FOGRA and 3DAP vs. Canon no public info about
PANTONE coverage.
Print with confidence

HP provides a wide variety of support services:
HP Color Expert improves end-user productivity, control over the risks/costs
that may result from repeated trial and error, and user/learning experience
about color and color management without the need to have technical
knowledge vs. Canon doesnt have this option.
HP Knowledge Center offers a complete and integrated self-learning
experience all in the same web page for professional photo, graphics and
prepress in 9 languages for free vs. Canon only valid for Professional Photo
and for US.
HP Print Preview with real layout preview and HP Alerts to avoid trial and
error, accessible from the driver vs. Canon only simple Windows/Mac
preview and alerts only on ink and media status.
HP has 4 user-replaceable printheads with automatic self-maintenance
routines, 1200 npi and nozzle substitution to provide always-on image
quality vs. Canon has 2 user replaceable printheads and 2560 nozzles per
color (npc). If one color fails the whole printhead needs to be replaced
(~$640 each(1).
NEW PRINT HEAD: Canon dual printhead can achieve higher
speeds but with lower image quality. Also, when one color fails
on the iPF8000S, the whole printhead needs to be replaced
(~$640(1). The HP printer has proactive printhead maintenance
routines that ensure nozzle health without user intervention and
minimum ink waste (see Lower running costs facts).
NON-FIRING DETECTION AND COMPENSATION FUNCTION: The

Canon printer detects non-firing nozzles and runs a cleaning
routine. If they remain obstructed, it then backs them up. On the
other hand, HP detects non-firing nozzles and replaces them.
Cleaning is only executed when there is a high number of faling
nozzles. HP process saves time and ink.
Lower running costs facts

Canon printers waste much more ink at installation and to keep their
printheads up and running:
Wasted ink
to glossy, including backlit, indoor banner and other commercially

available paper vs. Canon iPF8000S shows more grain and worse
transitions due to coalescence, halftoning and banding.
Excellent B&W prints on matte media thanks to the HP Three-Blacks ink set,
with darker blacks, best neutrality (no composite) and no metamerism vs.
Canon inks are less neutral which means they print B&W images using
composite (add color inks) to compensate, adding cast and metamerism.
HP prints resist fading for over 200 years on a wide variety of media in
color and B&W(4. Canon has no public data regarding lightfastness but
previous 12 color pigmented inks reported over 100 years only on
heavyweight coated paper (4.

cleaning routines. HP data represents the maximum waste turning on the printer
after a long period of inactivity.
Canon recommends running a Head Cleaning A (in the above table shown as
Cleaning) and, if this does not solve the problem, repeating Head Cleaning B
(Power Cleaning) two or three times. If this still does not improve printing, the
printhead may have reached the end of its useful life. The Canon printers perform
automatic cleaning routines after periods of printer inactivity. Also, Canon printers

The HP Designjet Z2100 Photo Printer series provides vivid, long lasting
high image quality prints on many media:
Excellent black-and-white prints on matte media thanks to the HP
Three-black ink set, with darker blacks, best neutrality (no composite),
and no metamerism vs. Canon inks are less neutral which means they
print black-and-white images using composite (add color inks) to
compensate, adding cast metamerism.
Exceptional fade resistance over 200 years on a wide variety of
media, for both black-and-white and color prints vs. Canon has no
public data regarding lightfastness but previous 12 color pigmented
inks reported over 100 years only on heavyweight coated paper (1.
12-COLOR PIGMENT INK SYSTEM: The HP printer can

achieve similar quality with eight colors with lower running
costs (see Lower running costs facts).
DUAL PRINT HEAD: When one color fails on the iPF6100,
the whole printhead needs to be replaced (~$640(3). The
HP printer has proactive printhead maintenance routines
that ensure nozzle health without user intervention and
minimum ink waste (see Lower running costs facts).
BUILT-IN COLOR CALIBRATION: Canon color sensor
recalibrates itself to the original optimal factory settings
and applies any necessary adjustments across media, but
unlike HP, can not create specific calibration for each
media type.
A unique color experience
HP color management can be used in any media with any print mode
and allows Windows and Mac previews vs. Canon Kyuanos color
management allows image reproduction in different lighting
environments, regardless of such factors as lighting conditions or print
media but can only be used with few media in 2 print modes.
Kyuanos requires an Eye-One to gather color information about the
viewing light (more colorimeters or spectrophotometers might be
supported), or user needs to set the tool directly by entering values
after inspection of a printed pattern. It can only run under Windows.
Also, HP has over 80% PANTONE coverage and full compliance

with prepress standards: SWOP, ISO, GRACOL, EUROSCALE,
TOYO, FOGRA and 3DAP vs. Canon has no public information about
PANTONE coverage.

Thanks to ink efficiency routines, HP does not need to implement Power

cleaning routines. HP data represents the maximum waste turning on the printer
after a long period of inactivity.

Get neutral B&W with outstanding quality!
HP provides excellent image quality for both B&W and color on
a wide variety of media:
Superb B&W prints thanks to the HP Quad-black ink set with
neutral prints (no composite), richer blacks, better image
depth, lower metamerism in B&W prints, no bronzing vs.
Epson inks are less neutral, they print B&W images using
composite (using color inks) to compensate, adding cast and
metamerism.
Unique gloss uniformity provided by HP Gloss Enhancer vs.
Epson prints show gloss uniformity issues on highlighted
areas.
Also, HP prints shows better details and less grain.
HP offers 30 paper presets of 3rd party media available in

the HP Web site vs. 3rd party media presets not available on
Epson Web site.
HP prints resist fading for over 200 years on a wide variety

Accurate color thanks to the 20 minute automatic custom
ICC profile creation vs. Epson optional spectrophotometer is
not able to create profiles. The user must save the Zmeasurements in a .txt file and upload them to an external
profiler, not included.
HP Professional PANTONE Emulation (ps only) enables easy
emulation of PANTONE color (including PANTONE Goe

EPSON MICROPIEZO TFP PRINTHEAD TECHNOLOGY compared to
the previous Epson SPx880, Epson has increased the number of

columns (10 vs. 9), and has doubled the nozzle density, which
allows the new printers to be faster than the previous. However,
Epson printers have a permanent printhead, if it fails; the support
service is required for replacement involving extra charge + ink
waste. HP has six user replaceable printheads in 2 colors per
printhead with 1056 nozzles per color.
AUTOMATIC BLACK INK MODE SWITCHING both Photo and
Matte Black ink cartridges installed simultaneously, for optimal black
ink mode. But, it requires user intervention to confirm the switching
process from the front control panel wasting ink in the process (See
save money facts). The HP printer detects the media loaded in the
printer and applies the automatically the kind of black needed for
better performance.
AUTO INK DROPLET DETECTION SYSTEM - Automatically checks
and verifies nozzle operability without the need for a pattern
printout. Unlike Epson, HP provides automatic and economical selfmaintenance routines which result in minimal waste of ink.
