Clive OConnell is recognised as one of the worlds leading insurance
and reinsurance legal
professionals. He has focused his practice on reinsurance law since
qualifying as a solicitor in
1982. His experience includes representing clients in some of the
largest reinsurance disputes in
recent years, including disputes involving sums in excess of $100
million and multijurisdictional
issues, and he has acted for clients in disputes in a variety of forums
including the Commercial
Court and arbitration in England, the federal and state courts and
arbitration in the United States,
the Commercial Court and arbitration in France, as well as other
jurisdictions such as Bermuda,
Jamaica, Switzerland, Sweden, and Hong Kong. Clive has acted for clients
on wording both of
their general programmes as well as unique transactions. He has also
been involved in every
aspect of run-off and exit strategies for reinsurers and insurers.
Clive is ranked highly in all major international legal ranking
directories, including Chambers and
Partners, Legal 500, Euromoney Expert Guides, Whos Who Legal, The
International Who s Who
of Insurance & Reinsurance Lawyers, and others. The Chambers and
Partners directory has
noted, Clive OConnell is deemed a formidable reinsurance lawyer by
market sources. The
Chambers and Partners Global Guide listed Clive in its 2014 edition as
one of the U.K.s topranking reinsurance lawyers, describing him as a reinsurance lawyer who
is highly accomplished
in handling prestigious cases. One source told Chambers, Hes one of
the few lawyers combining
reinsurance expertise with capital market expertise. Hes creative,
tactical, realistic, and business-

minded. In 2011, Legal 500 called him one of the best reinsurance
lawyers in London.
He is currently the U.K. representative for DRI (Defense Research
Institute) International, as well
as General Counsel of the International Insurance Society, and is a
regular presenter at meetings
of the International Association of Claims Professionals. He was the
Legal Correspondent of The
Review Worldwide Reinsurance magazine. Mr. OConnell writes regularly
for publications
including Insurance Day, Reactions, and Global Reinsurance. He is a
contributor to Reinsurance
Practice and the Law and an author of a chapter on legal issues for
Alternative Risk Strategies.
He served for several years on the panel deciding Reactions magazines
London Market Awards.
An avid cyclist, Clive has participated in the Lloyds Cycling Clubs
950-mile ride from Lloyds to
the Reinsurance Rendez Vous in Monte Carlo.
