Marks Farm Update

Southwest Oregon is a beautiful part of
the world. I love it here. The green hills, the
evergreens, the lush forests, the many rivers that
flow down from the Cascades and out to the sea.
But the price we pay for all of this green is rain.
And right now
we are in the
rainy season.
T he Applegate Valley is
socked in with
dense, cool,
persistent Oregon rain. The good news is that our snow pack
is growing and our reservoirs are filling. The rain
will give us the green landscape we love and crave
here. The bad news, for a farmer at least, is that
last year the rains lasted far into the early summer
and made us fall way behind in our planting. We
are hoping that is not the case this year.
One of the things we do every year in the
spring is start the process to produce a brand
new crop. This year its Yerba Santa. As many of
you know this sticky leafed evergreen is used for
support of the respiratory system of the body.
Yerba Santa has never been cultivated in the

U.S. We are hoping that

we can get our first crop
this year. It takes experience, research and careful
execution to produce a
good crop.
We have to put the
herb through a series of
trials to determine the
ideal conditions for robust growth. Determining
the best seed treatments,
potting mix, soil type
in the field, cultivation
technique, irrigation requirements, and harvest
procedures are several of the many ways we test
our crop. It is very exciting to bring a new herb
into cultivation so that we can provide this high
quality healing product to our customers.
I guess the truth is that those of us who live
and farm in Oregon trust the rain. We trust the
rain to help us produce the best and richest environment to grow a wide variety of high quality
hard to produce crops. Being cold and damp for a
few months is a small price to pay for the bounty
that comes from our abundant rain.

Vitalizing Herbs for Summer

Acerola Cherry (Malpighia glabra)

One cup of raw orange slices contains 95.8mg of vitamin C.

A cup of acerola cherries contains 1,644mg, or 2,740 percent of
the recommended value. In addition to its anti-oxidant properties,
vitamin C supports healthy skin, bones and teeth, blood vessels and
muscles and helps in wound healing.

Lavender (Lavandula spp.)

The word lavender comes from the Latin word lavare which
means to wash. Lavender has been used for thousands of years for
many different reasons but primarily it was used as soap and perfume. It also promotes a balanced nervous system, supports healthy
sleep patterns, and may be effective in relieving muscle tension.

Artichoke Leaf (Cynara scolymus)

A team of researchers at the University of Reading, UK, has

discovered that artichoke leaf extract can help to lower cholesterol
levels in patients with slightly elevated cholesterol that were otherwise healthy. Artichoke leaf extract is rich in flavonoids, which can
support cardiovascular health.

Wormwood Petite (Artemisia pontica)

Artemisia pontica, sometimes called petite wormwood, is used in

the coloration of absinthe. It supports the digestive system and is
also used to distill Vermouth, and make Wormwood wine, popular
in Germany. Our pontica has been carefully cultivated and selected
for our microclimate to yield a distinct color and flavor.

Organic Certification: Our Cornerstone of Quality

e are passionate about organic. It is the

basis of all our efforts. We are certified by
Oregon Tilth Certified Organic as growers and processors. Our standards meet or exceed the standards
of the USDA. Our facilities are inspected by the

malia McClureWildcrafted Herbs

Some of our herbs are carefully harvested and

dried by wildcrafters known to us who follow strict
harvesting guidelines established by the company. Herbs
that are Grown Without Chemicals (GWC) are grown
and shipped to us chemical-free. We offer them with
the knowledge that they are grown, harvested
and shipped to us with the same quality and
care that we require of our Certified Organically
Grown and Wildcrafted herbs.

Certified Botanical Authenticity

In order to serve our customers requirements

for positive botanical identity, we have received
Certificates of Authenticity from the American Herbal
Pharmacopoeia for almost all of the herbs grown
on the farm. Herbs from Pacific Botanicals are
used by the American Herbal Pharmacopeia to
develop an identity footprint that other testing
facilities use to evaluate the authenticity of their
own herbs.

Tonis Window

To accept what you are is to be content, and contentment is the greatest wealth.
To work with patience is to gather power. To surrender to the Eternal flow is to be
completely present.
-Vimalia McClure

Farewell dear one!

My mom passed away in March this year four days after her 98th birthday. Her given name
was Mildred Gertrude, but since she was born on Saint Patricks Day, every one started calling
her Shammie Lou (thank God), for, of course, the shamrock. She was a delightful fun loving
woman who loved to go to the casino and play the slots. She supported the best in me my
whole life. I will miss her dearly. I have faith that her soul will continue its journey in the great
cycle of life. Maybe someday we will meet again. But for now she lives in a warm and loving
place in my heart. I will never forget how she blessed me.
I like to think that my moms sweet spunky kind spirit left her little frail body and is starting over. Towards the end my dad referred to her as my little hummingbird. When I look out my
window today I can see that the earth is also starting over again. From the cold dying back of
the winter to the rebirth of spring. The buds on the trees are just about to burst. The ground
is covered in the greenest carpet. The birds are returning. Towhees, American Gold and Rosy
House finches, Black Cap Chickadees, and even the Hummingbirds.
The greenhouses here at the farm are bursting with new shoots. Dori and Tonia and the rest
of the crew are tending them with care. They make sure the temperature of the soil and the air are
right, the watering is consistent, and that each herb has the right balance of minerals in the potting soil. All of this to make sure that our babies as we affectionately refer to them, are healthy
and vigorous.
I am hopeful this year that our healing crops will be abundant and that our fine team will
continue to do great work to serve our customers. In a few months this farm will be covered with
flowers in a vibrant palette of colors. That is how I like to think of my mom... out of the darkness
of death she has blossomed into the loveliest spirit flower. Godspeed Shammie Lou. I love you.

Availability and
Out of Stock Items

Out of stock items on the web site will say

please call. This is so we can put you on our
call list when the herb comes in. Some of our
herbs are highly seasonal and although we try to
anticipate demand, we are not always accurate
with our projections. First you can see if we are
out of stock on anything by also going to the
out of stock tab on the web site. If we are
out-of-stock you can either re-order at a later date
or call us to be notified when the herb comes in.
When the herbs arrive we will call to confirm
your interest.

Shipping

Because we are a working farm we do not

guarantee 24 hour turnaround. Our preferred
carrier is UPS. If your order weight is above
200 pounds we may choose a freight carrier. If
your order is to be shipped to a post office box,
Alaska or Hawaii we only deliver by US Postal
Service which is more reasonable. If you need
something by a specific date call your order in
and we will accommodate your request if at
all possible.
If you wish to have your order shipped by
an expedited service (e.g. overnight, or 2nd day
air) please call your order in by 9 am PST, M-F,
541-479-7777, option 2. Please feel free to call
us about any shipping questions or options at
541-479-7777, ex. 100.

for mailing dry plant material to California,
Hawaii, Arizona and foreign countries. Please
contact your local Agriculture authorities
regarding any regulations for the importation
of dried plant material. Although we diligently
strive to stay informed about the many and ever
changing shipping regulations, the ultimate
responsibility is with the consumer. We cannot
be responsible for any delays or rejections of
product crossing into these states or imported
into a foreign country. We must receive proper
shipping and labeling instructions from the
shipper and/or consumer.

Farm Direct Skullcap: Scutellaria lateriflora

Skullcaps genus name, Scutellaria,
comes from the Latin Scutella, which
means a small dish or tray, which refers
to the appearance of the sepals during
the fruiting period. The species name,
lateriflora, means flowering on the side,
which is how the flowers appear on the
one-sided racemes. Skullcaps common
name comes from the helmet-like shape
of the flowers.
Skullcap herb is a sedative nervine and has mild antispasmodic and
anti-hypertensive effects. It has been
found in a double blind, placebo-controlled study to have anxiety-reducing
effects. It tones and relaxes the nervous
system and is useful for all types of anxiety, especially anxiety, stress and irritability associated with menopause and PMS.
Its well known among the Cherokee and other Native American tribes, as a strong emmenagogue (herbs
which stimulate blood flow in the pelvic area and uterus) and female medicinal herb. It was used in some tribes as a
ceremonial plant to introduce young girls into womanhood. In addition to its anxiety reducing benefits it
has been used historically to ease tension headaches and reduce insomnia.
Our farm has an ideal environment for this moisture loving plant and has been growing 100% certified
organic skullcap for 33 years. If you are using this fine herb you can be assured that you are getting the best
product available in the U.S.

Always leave
enough time in
your life to do
something that
makes you happy,
satisfied, even joyous. That has more
of an effect on
economic well-being than any other
single factor.

The Woman From The Greenhouse...D.E.

There is a woman from the greenhouse. You may know
her. She was waiting for such a long time. She was hoping
all the conditions were right. She was praying to the Spirit
God to bring her the one. The special one. The one that
would make her life complete.
She sat for many days in the same place out in the
center of an open field. She felt the wind and the rain. At
times she heard a whispering from far off. Like a small
wind chime from someone elses yard way down the road.
She became the mistress of waiting. Her soul shimmered with patience. No one could move her from her
spot. Winter came and passed with its freezing dark days.
Ice like frozen longing held fast upon the pond. The naked
trees stood like heros surrounding her, guarding her spirit.
Each night when the moon came out she filled her cup with
silver light. Drinking it, she knew, would make her strong.
When the days grew longer and the geese came home
she bent down to put her fingers in the moist brown
ground. Her red hair was lifted in the breeze like fingers
of smoldering fire. The sunlight made stars shine in her eyes. Its fine golden rays pulsed down penetrating her skin, warming her blood.
The ground was heating up. The pale blue sky was a cocoon. In her peace she could see how the green love light was making everything. A
thousand plants grew up around her, dandelion, sage, and elecampane. Vines of astragalus spiraled up at her side reaching
for heaven. They sent their essence out to the woman in the center of the field and she felt the arriving. It was subtle, and
pure, and fine. Finer than maybe, finer than soon and finer than sometimes. It fell on her like angels rain.
She looked at her hands, her arms, and her pulsing legs and she could see...the hair on her skin was dancing. Look she
said, I am not the same. There is music in my fingers. I am becoming someones dream. My heart is singing and my belly is round. Yes, my belly
is round! -D.E.
