3.2.4. RS232 Serial Communication

To connect with PC, a RS 232 serial port is available on the front panel of the
relay. The pin layout is as follows.

RS-232 Specifications
RS-232 is a complete standard. This means that the standard sets out to
ensure
Compatibility between the host and peripheral systems by specifying:
Common voltage and signal levels
Common pin-wiring configurations
A minimal amount of control information between the host and peripheral
systems.
Unlike many standards which simply specify the electrical characteristics of a
given interface, RS-232 specifies electrical, functional, and mechanical
characteristics to meet the above three criteria.

USER MANUAL

The individual protection function of the SLR140 Over current and Earth Fault
Relay can independently of each Other be enabled or disabled according to the
requirements of the application.
5.1. Principle of the Numerical Protection Technique
The SLR140 relay is designed using numerical technology. This means that
all
signal filtering, protection and control functions are made by digital
processing.
The numerical technology used in the relay is primarily based on an
adapted fast
Fourier (FFT) analysis, in which case the no of calculations (multiplications
&
additions) required to filter the measuring quantity remains reasonable.
By using synchronized sampling of the measured signal (phase or earth
fault
current) and a sample rate according to the 2n series, the FFT technique
leads to a
solution, which can be realized with just a 8 bit microcontroller without
using a separate DSP (Digital Signal Processor)

The synchronized sampling means an even number of 2n samples per

period, e.g.16 samples/period. This means that the frequency must be
measured and the no of samples per period must be controlled accordingly,
so that the no of samples per period remains constant should the frequency
change.

5.2.3. Circuit Breaker Failure Protection (50BF)

The operation of the circuit breaker failure protection is based on the
supervision of the operating time, from the pick up of the configured trip
relay
to the dropout of the same relay.
If that time is longer than the operating time of the CBFP stage, the CBFP
stage activates another output relay, which will remain activated, until the
primary trip relay resets.
The CBFP stage functions also in earth fault situations, because its function
is merely based on supervision of the function of the output relay T1.

The CBFP blocking signal prevents the CBFP stage from operating, when the
Stelmec Limited |

Over Current and Earth Fault Relay

SLR140

USER MANUAL

output relays or any other protection function is operated by forced

control.
This protection feature allows the relay to trip the upstream circuit breaker
when a local breaker failure condition is detected.

5.2.4. Self Supervision

The functions of the micro controller and the associated circuitry as well as
the
program execution is supervised by means of a separate watchdog circuit.
Besides supervising the relay the watchdog circuit attempts to restart the
micro controller in a fault situation. If the restarting fails, the watchdog
issues
a self-supervision alarm because of a permanent relay fault.
When the watchdog circuit detects a permanent fault it always blocks any
control of the other output relays, except for the self- supervision output
relay.
Also the internal supply voltage is supervised. Should the auxiliary supply
of
the relay disappear, an IF alarm is automatically given. The IF relay contact
is normally closed type of contact. This means that the IF relay contact is
closed, when there is an internal fault or there is no auxiliary power
supply.
If the relay is fully operational with the auxiliary power supply, the IF
contact is on the open position.

Trip circuit supervision is a critical function in a protection scheme.
Continuously monitors the status of circuit breaker trip circuits to detect:
Wiring damage
Loose terminal screws
Poorly crimped terminal wiring
CB coil open circuit CB pallet switch misaligned
Trip circuit supply failure (Blown fuse)

5.2.7. Auto-Recloser
Introduction
In electric power distribution, an autorecloser is a circuit breaker equipped
with a mechanism that can automatically close the breaker after it has been
opened due to a fault
Autoreclosers are used in coordinated protection schemes for overhead line
power distribution circuits. These circuits are prone to transitory faults such as
nearby lightning strikes, wind-borne debris, animals climbing the insulators,
and the like. With a conventional circuit breaker or fuse, a transient fault
would open the breaker or blow the fuse, disabling the line until a technician
could manually close the circuit breaker or replace the blown fuse. But an
autorecloser will make several pre-programmed attempts to re-energize the
line. If the transient fault has cleared, the autorecloser's circuit breaker will
remain closed and normal operation of the power line will resume. If the fault
is some sort of a permanent fault (downed wires, tree branches lying on the
wires, etc.) the autorecloser will exhaust its pre-programmed attempts to reenergize the line and remain tripped off until manually commanded to try
again. 90% of faults on overhead power lines are transient and can be cured by
autoreclosing. [3] The result is increased availability of supply.
5.2.8. Basic Requirements
Stelmec Limited |

Over Current and Earth Fault Relay

32

SLR140

USER MANUAL

The Auto-recloser relay should reclose the breakers whenever it is

initiated by
protective relay.
The Auto-recloser relay shouldnt reclose the breakers if the initiation
occurs
during the reclaim time.
For single pole mode, the AR-Relay should only reclose the Breakers for
single
phase to earth fault.
The AR-Relay should never reclose the breakers if,
No initiation from protective relay e.g. when the breakers are
intentionally
opened by people.
Any of the Breakers is not ready, its not switched to active.

5.2.9. Restricted Earth Fault Protection (67N)

The restricted earth-fault protection is designed to detect high-resistance
earth faults within the protection zone of power transformers.
Restricted earth-fault protection as well as transformer differential
protection is based on the principle of comparison of measured variables by
comparing the residual current of the phase current transformers of the given
winding with the current of the associated grounded star point. Since residual
current may occur due to transient saturation during high through fault
currents restraining is required for restricted earth fault protection. For this
purpose two different measuring principles are available.
i.e. the biased differential scheme and the phase comparison scheme. The
biased differential scheme can be used, if the actual accuracy limit factor of
the CT is sufficient for the application. In the case of heavy CT saturation, the
phase comparison scheme is recommended to be used instead, to avoid
unwanted tripping.
The protection function block used for this application is called restricted
differential protection. Standard over current and earth fault protection relays do
not provide adequate protection for star connected primary transformer windings
particularly if the neutral is earthed through impedance.

7. Communication
The PC Port is used for on site parameterization of the relay, for downloading
of a program and for reading relay parameters to a PC. For connection to a PC,
one RS 232C serial port is available on the front panel of the relay.
7.1. Mod bus RS485 Communication
The interface popularly known as RS-485 is an electrical specification for
multipoint systems that use balanced lines. RS-485 is similar to RS-422, but RS422 allows just one driver with multiple receivers whereas RS-485 supports
multiple drivers and receivers.
RS-485 is actually a physical layer specification which allows multiple nodes to
be connected to a differential 2-wire bus. Unlike RS-232 which can be full
duplex (transmit and receive at the same time), RS-485 exchanges must be half
duplex. This means there must be rules about who can talk and when.
RS485 is the most versatile communication standard in the standard series

defined by the EIA, as it performs well on all four points. That is why RS485 is
currently a widely used communication interface in data acquisition and
control applications where multiple nodes communicate with each other.
