Tis the Season

to be Jolly....
Hoole Roundabout December 2015

HRISTMAS is a time for merriment and fun. As the nights draw in we

thought you might appreciate a few good (or bad!) jokes ....

Two factory workers are talking. The woman

says, I can make the boss give me the day off. The
man replies, And how would you do that? The
woman says, Just wait and see. She then hangs
upside down from the ceiling. The boss comes in
and says, What are you doing? The woman replies,
Im a light bulb. The boss then says, Youve been
working so much that youve gone crazy. I think you
need to take the day off. The man starts to follow
her and the boss says, Where are you going? The
man replies, Im going home too. I cant work in the
dark.
A man walks into a chemists and says, Can
I have a bar of soap, please? The chemist says,
Do you want it scented? And the man says, No,
Ill take it with me now.
A group of chess enthusiasts were kicked out of a
hotel reception for discussing their winning games.
The manager said, I cant stand chess nuts boasting
in an open foyer.
Two cannibals were eating a clown one said
to the other, Does he taste funny to you?

Reaching the end of a job interview,

an interviewer asks a young graduate,
What starting salary are you looking for?
The young man replies, In the region of
50,000 a year, depending on the benefits
package. The interviewer enquires,
Well, what would you say to a package of
six weeks annual leave, full medical and
dental, company matching retirement
fund to 50% of salary, and a company
car leased every two years. The graduate
sits up straight and says, Wow! Are you
kidding? The interviewer replies, Yeah,
but you started it.
A husband and wife were lying in
bed unable to sleep as the dog next door
was barking. Ive had enough. Im
going to sort it out once and for all!
said the husband as he leapt out of bed
and went downstairs. A few minutes
later he came back into the bedroom
and got back into bed. The dog was
still barking outside. What did you
do? asked the wife. Ive put it in our
garden. Lets see how they like it!

Wishing all our customers, friends and family a

Hoole speed camera

keeps on snapping!
HOOLES most prolific photographer has been at it again!
The GATSO speed camera on Hoole Road, by the playing fields and opposite the United
Reformed Church) is officially the most successful in Cheshire.
Data obtained by the Chester Chronicle newspaper under a Freedom of Information request
shows that the Hoole camera catches more than 20 drivers every day.
It snapped 7,360 vehicles in the 12 months up to March 2015, with average fines ranging from
60 to 100 depending on how fast they were going. It catches more than twice the number of
the second most successful camera, on the A49 in Warrington.
Its success is based on the fact that so many drivers have come off the motorway and dont
see the camera when they come round the corner as it is partially obscured by branches.

Winter Watch Parade

THE Chester Winter Watch Parade takes place
at 7pm on Thursday 10th December, starting
at the Forum and travelling down Werburgh
Street, Eastgate Street and Bridge Street.
There are performances including dance, fire
breathing and sword fights in Eastgate Street
and in the Market Square.
Dating from the 15th century, local artists and
community groups join together to celebrate
the time when the city leaders would hand over
the keys to the city watch.
Visit: www.midsummerwatch.co.uk
On the following Thursday, 17th December, at
7pm, it is the Saturnalia Parade starting from
Eastgate Street. Chester is back under Roman
control for the night as the Roman legion lights
up the streets with a torch-lit parade. This
traditional Roman event celebrates the feast
of Saturn. It was a time of celebration, visits to
friends, and gift-giving. It was also traditional
for masters and slaves to swap places, making
Saturnalia very popular. Free event.

Hoole History Corner

Hoole History and Heritage Society chairman Ralph Earlam details the history of Rob

HE houses Nos. 189 203 Hoole Lane

(see picture opposite) were built in the
late 1920s on land which was a market
garden run by H. S. Roberts called The Oaks.
Two of the properties appear in a 1927/8
Directory and all are listed in 1929/30. An aerial
view (courtesy of Britain from Above website)
shows them in 1931. Locally they were known
as Roberts Row. Apparently the Roberts family
owned the land and were able to build on it, and
in 1933/34 no fewer than three of the houses
were actually occupied by families called Roberts.
Originally all the houses had individual names

the only one displaying its name today is No.

195 Sunningdale. I n the 1933/4 Directory only
three of the four houses to the east of it (i.e. in the
direction of Pipers Ash) were named (presumably
one was unoccupied). There is speculation about
No. 195 which could have been called Marna,
Deepdene or Brindlewood.
The original No. 205 was a farm house set
back where Hornbeam Close is today. This was
occupied from 1927/8 until the 1950s by a George
E. Roberts and was called Lynwood. George
E. Roberts looked after the spinney behind Pine
Grove and had large chicken houses there. (The

Hoole History and Heritage Society always welcomes enquiries and information about our past.

ROBERTS ROW
Roberts Row, on Hoole Lane, in response to a query from a reader.

spinney had been planted to block out the view of

the Workhouse lower down Hoole Lane so that the
then lady owner of Hoole House could see neither
it nor the poor and destitute of Chester forced to
seek shelter therein.) The spinney can be seen
on the aerial photograph which was taken before
Pine Grove was built around 1932, Myrtle Grove
having already been completed. The white building
very near to Hoole Lane below Myrtle Grove
(level with the smoke from a passing train) was
Shortridges Dairy Farm which was still operating
and selling milk in the late 1950s.
When the Royal Agricultural Show was held in
Hoole in 1893 the site extended from Hoole Road
across the current playing field, also taking in what
is now Alexandra Park, Lime Grove, Canadian
Avenue and the allotment area to Hoole Lane.
The cattle pens for the Show were located near to
where Roberts Row stands today.

Even earlier, the Tithe Map for Hoole circa 1839

showed that the field name for the narrow north
side of Hoole Lane from Canadian Avenue to
Pine Grove was Lower Slang owned jointly by
Mrs. Frances Bagnall and the Rev. Peploe William
Hamilton. (Peploe St later became Westminster Rd
and Hamilton St remains one of the most attractive
streets in Hoole.)
This land on the north side was sold in 1852 the
sale details show that Hoole Lane was then called
St. Annes Lane. When the Workhouse was built in
1878 it was for a short time known as Workhouse
Lane. Hoole Lane was a long established route
from Chester through Boughton to Guilden Sutton
and remained a country lane for many years, the
last farm Batemans not being developed for
housing until the middle of the 20th Century.

HOOLE RANGERS FC

Two become one

HOOLE RANGERS have reluctantly decided to
withdraw the 1st team from the Chester and Wirral
football league premier division.
Unfortunately, several of last years players
chose not to play again this year, and despite the
tremendous efforts of everyone involved in the
club, particularly 1st team manager Mark Roberts,
we were unable to recruit the players necessary to
compete at the level required in the premier league.
We tried out a number of new players in two league
games but defeats of 14-3 and 3-1 convinced us
we could not compete in this league and that
something drastic needed to be done.
We have liaised all along with the league
committee, who were totally supportive and
helpful, but the inevitable decision was taken early
in November to drop the 1st team and move forward
with just one team in Division Two.
With the club in so much disarray at the start of
the season, the results for the reserves have been
mixed but with the additional players now available,
we have won games and moved to a respectable
mid table position, which is a decent platform to
launch the new restructured club. We are hopeful

that with time, we can rebuild the playing squad

and turn the club once again into a real force in local
football.
Now that the difficult decisions are made,
and all players are aware of our plans going
forward, the atmosphere around the club has
improved dramatically. We have added new player
representatives to the committee so feel really
positive about the future.
The team and officials are all doing a great job,
but we would still like to strengthen the club in the
following areas :
l New Players. We train on Thursday evenings on
the all-weather pitches at County Officers so come
and join us
l Sponsors. Helping fund items such as tracksuits,
match balls, match fees etc.
l New committee members. We have 5 committee
members made up from team managers and
players. What we need now is people who are
willing to help with the organisation of the club, e.g.
by helping on Saturday afternoons, fundraising etc.
If you interested in any of the above, please contact
me on mobile / e-mail below.

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH

EARLY
WINTER
THE year end is approaching and it is time to enjoy
the small splashes of colour in the garden. Frost is so
pretty on the most ordinary of foliage so enjoy the
frosting on the humble blackberry leaf (see photo) or
the large flat dying heads of Sedum or Hydrangea.
I know I have mentioned this before but one of my
favourite shrubs Viburnum bodnantense Dawn,
started flowering in October and is heavy with scent
in milder periods throughout winter. Plant it near a
regular thoroughfare so you can catch the honeyed
scent daily.

evergreen large spiky leaves and long stems covered

with tiny yellow scented flowers. Mahonias are great
for striking winter colour and if they get too tall, cut
stems down in early spring and they will re-sprout
new shoots for next winter.

For colour the evergreens take the stage in

winter. Some conifers have architectural shapes
provided they are given space to grow naturally.
Chamaecyparis pisifera Filifera Aurea is a bit of
a mouthful of a name but it will grow as a broad
pyramid shape with drooping golden foliage all
year and can be clipped to keep it compact. Partner
it with the rich deep green leaves and red berries
of mounded Skimmia and some glaucous blue
Euphorbia characias wulfenii.

Make sure plants in pots are protected from frost

by making sure the pots are not waterlogged as they
are more likely to freeze and crack in cold weather.
Take a plastic bag larger than the pot, cut the bottom
off to allow drainage and then stuff with straw to the
top of the pot. Move lemon or orange trees in pots to
greenhouse or cool conservatory and do the same
for pelargoniums. Last year I kept mine dry in pots in
the garage by a window and they came through to
grow on this year.

Jobs to do in the garden include pruning grapevines

when the plant is fully dormant in winter. They
produce sap when stems are cut and can have
disease introduced to the cut when the plant is
growing. Pruning in winter when the sap will not
bleed prevents this from happening.

Other plants that may be in flower include

Mahonia media, the varieties Charity or Winter
Sun are often seen for sale. This is a tall shrub with

Look up....

and use all the

space in your home
We would all like more space in our
homes and with houses in the UK getting smaller, space is at a premium. But
what if there was an affordable way
to create more space in our homes? A
simple solution for all those people fed
up of living among clutter and one that
doesnt require planning permission or
any major structural building work.
For most, the loft is a dark and dingy
place visited seasonally; once to dig
out the Christmas decorations and
then again to bring down the holiday
suitcases. A precarious scramble across
dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing
whats needed then clambering back
past boxes filled with long-forgotten
belongings.
But that dark and dingy place is worth
thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of

the floor space in an average home. So

shouldnt you be making the most of it?
And thats where More Than Loft
Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded
in Bolton over five years ago, MTLL
specialises in generating space by making the loft easily accessible. And thats
all it does. Its not a generic
building company, and its not
jack-of-all-trades. MTLL only
installs loft hatches, ladders,
boarding, lighting and insulation. Its what the company
does all day, every day, using qualified
local installers who are reliable, tidy
and efficient.
The latest MTLL franchisee to open
covers Crewe and Chester and is
run by skilled tradesman, Adam
Shepherd...Our average job is about

Heres a great way

to make more
storage space...

290 and only takes a few hours to

complete, says Adam.
And for that, customers get a modern
two section aluminium ladder 50sq
ft of boarding and a light to make the
space safe and secure.
The price customers are quoted is
the price they will pay, with no
additional call out or credit card
charges.
More Than Loft Ladders is already a trusted name in the north
west with over 2,500 successful installations, and I really wanted to bring it
here to Cheshire...Its such a great and
cost effective way for people to gain the
extra space they need, added Adam.

A-Z OF CHRISTMAS
BY THE REV ANDY GLOVER

A is for Angels
There are angels everywhere in the Christmas Story; angels had a
critical role to play in the birth of the Christ-child.
B is for Bethlehem
Historys greatest figure was born, not in a palace. mansion or a
hospital, but in a stable!
C is for Carols
Away in a Manger is the best known and best loved Christmas Carol,
according to a recent poll. With more than 7 out of 10 adults attending
a Carol service every year.
D is for Decorations
In a Nativity play recently, all the lights were to be turned off, leaving
only one light in the manger. At the appropriate moment all light went
out, even the manger light. The silence was broken when one of the
little shepherds whispered loudly Hey, you turned off Jesus!
E is for Emmanuel
The birth of Jesus shows us once and for all that God is not above us or
against us but rather among us.
F is for Families
Christmas was going to be different this year. Dad spoke to the family
about use of time, excessive spending on gifts and the need for les
arguments. He ended with, Lets make this best Christmas ever! His
little son replied But dad I dont see how we can improve on the first
Christmas!
G is for Gifts
Christmas is about giving and receiving of gifts. On average most UK
families will spend between 530 and 682 on gifts, decorations, food
and drink.
H is for Herod
Herod was the first man who hated Christmas. He was the original
Grinch. Herod represents all attempts to destroy Christmas as a festival
and to erdaicate all talk of Jesus.
I is for Innkeeper
In the Nativity play Mary and Joseph knocked on the door, the innkeeper
came to the door. Can we have a room for the night asked Joseph. The
Innkeeper replied, come in, you can have the best room in the hotel.
There was a pause. But Joseph was a quick thinker, he looked over the
innkeepers shoulder, turned to Mary and said, We not staying a dump
like that, Come on Mary well sleep in the stable!
J is for Joseph
Joseph is definitely the forgotten hero of the nativity story. Joseph
stood faithfully by Mary and was a father to Jesus as the boy grew
up. In our time, when absent fathers has become epidemic Josephs
example is a powerful one.
K is for Kings
The top three things overheard on the Wise Mens Journey to
Bethlehem
3. You guys ever eat camel meat I hear it tastes like chicken
2. Man, Im starting to get a rush from this frankincense!
1. All this staring at a star while riding a camel is making me woozy
Im going to be sick!!
L is for Love
It is the season in which we are reminded of the importance of loving
others, of giving rather than receiving. For God so loved the world that
he gave his only son.
M is for Mary
At a Nativity Play all was going well until the angel appeared and told
the girl playing Mary she was going to be have a baby. But how can this
be said Mary since I am a Viking!
N is for Nativity
Christian art has made the nativity scene gloriously hygienic. But the
truth is, the stable or cave where Jesus was born would have been
smelly, dirty and untidy.
O is for Origins
Have you ever thought why have a Christmas tree? Who pulled the first
Cracker? Who sent the first Christmas card? Why do we call it Boxing
Day? Was Jesus really born on December 25th?

40 Tel 01244350398

P is for Peace
Who can forget in the First World
War, when British and German
soldiers laid down their weapons
came into No Mans land and
played a game of football on
Christmas Day? The first
Christmas Day was greeted with
the angels declaring peace
on earth
Andy Glover has lived in Hoole
Q is for Queues
It was the week before
with his wife Sue for 27 years.
Christmas; in one long

say, they should kill
Road, as Youth Pastor, before

Christmas. A lady, further
becoming the Pastor and
back in the line replied, They

did they hung him on a
cross!
R is for Revelling
The birth of a child is an occasion for great rejoicing Jesus birth was
no different. Today, however, the rejoicing, is less associated with this
birth, it is motivated by the joy of having days off work and the excess
of food and drink.
S is for Santa
A little girl climbed onto Santas lap, Santa asked the usual questions,
And what would you like for Christmas? The child started at him open
mouthed and horrified for a minute then gasped, Didnt you get my
email?
T is for Thanksgiving
Christmas is a time when we should excel in the gratitude attitude.
Thanksgiving is therefore as much a part of Christmas as anything
else.
U is for Unselfishness
This Christmas, why not live simply, so that others may simply live. Its
Christmas every time you let God love others through you, every time
you smile at your neighbour and offer him your hand.
V is for Visiting
Christmas is a time when we visit family and friends and when we
ourselves receive visitors. The startling truth about Christmas is that
God in Christ chose to make an extraordinarily journey from heaven to
earth to visit us.
W is for Wonder
Was there a moment, known only to God, when all the stars held their
breath, when the galaxies paused in their dance for a fraction of a
second, and the Word, who had called it all into being, went with all His
love into the womb of a young girl?
X is for Xmas
You could say we have taken the Christ out of Christmas, if you do this
all you are left with is M & S!!
Y is Yule
This was a mid winter festival which included the burning of a Yule log.
It is associated with the longest day and looks forward to the coming
of spring.
Z is for Zonked Out
The festivities of Christmas end with the sigh of contentment and the
sound of snoring as granddad falls asleep after his Christmas lunch.
May I take this opportunity in saying I hope you have a
wonderful Christmas and close with this Celtic Christmas
blessing: The light of the Christmas star to you. The warmth of
home and hearth to you. The cheer and good will of friends to
you. The hope of a childlike heart to you. The joy of a thousand
angels to you. The love of the Son and Gods peace to you.
Amen
