Cloudy2Clear Windows
Service With A Smile!
Its been a crazy
few months for
Cloudy2Clear Windows.
The company which
specialises in repairing
windows which are
steamed up, broken or
damaged by replacing
the panes not the
frames has grown
rapidly as homeowners
take advantage of their
services.
Managing Director
Alan Ball feels that its
all about service. Our
product is simple. If
your double glazing is
misted up we can replace
the glass at a fraction
of the cost of a new
window, in any type of
frame, and with a new
5 year guarantee. But
its not just about saving

people money, although

that obviously helps.
Many tradespeople have
struggled since last year
and I honestly feel that
during the good times a
minority perhaps didnt
focus on customer care
as much as they should
have done. We make sure
we turn up when we say
we will, do the job the
customer requires and
leave their house as clean
as a whistle. I often get
comments back from
customers on how they
really didnt expect that
sort of service which,
in a way, is very sad for
the service industry as a
whole.
Cloudy2Clear service
the Handbridge, Curzon
Park, Westminster Park &

Hough Green areas and

Alan is finding that his
approach is a major factor
in his success. The truth
is that its not just the
personal satisfaction that
I get from doing a good
job but also it makes
good business sense.
I get a huge amount of
business from friends

and family of people Ive

done work for, which just
goes to show how much
a little bit of effort is
appreciated.
So, if your windows are
steamed up, broken or
damaged give Alan a call
for a free quotation on

be happy to help!

Young bookworms are

record breakers
A record number of children took part in the Summer Reading Challenge at Lache Library.
The aim is to encourage reluctant readers, with some
children taking out up to seven books.
The children were presented with a certificate and a
medal at a ceremony at the library, with support from local
councillors Razia Daniels, Neil Sullivan and Jane Mercer
who donated funds from the members budget.
Cllr Daniels said: It was just wonderful to see so many
children had taken part and said that they really enjoyed
the reading challenge.
The Lache Library Treasure Hunt was won by Luwe
Hayes-Roberts who was rewarded with an extra gift.
His mother, Nichola Hayes-Roberts, said: Thanks to the
Lache Library staff the boys were given extra incentive to
read and enjoy many books, they are very proud of their
medals and certificates.
Anything that promotes a child friendly, friendly and
helpful staff and a comfortable environment for children
to enjoy reading is a very positive thing.

Top Tips for a Top Turkey

FIRST things first, how many people are
you catering for and how big does your
turkey need to be?

Size Allow 1Ib/454g per adult when deciding

how big a whole turkey to buy.
COOK YOUR TURKEY FROM ROOM
TEMPERATURE.
Removal from your fridge
an hour before cooking
will achieve this. Be sure
to remove any giblets from
the cavity of the bird before
placing in the oven. Prior to
cooking it is good to bear in
mind two important rules.
1. NEVER OVERCOOK
YOUR TURKEY;
2. NEVER UNDERCOOK
YOUR TURKEY.
I know that this states
the obvious but a successful roast turkey dinner
depends on this. No pressure then!
Turkey is very lean meat and therefore can go
very dry when overcooked. It really is essential to
get your cooking times organised so that you know
approximately when you need to be removing the
turkey from the oven. Make sure that your bird is
accurately weighed prior to cooking and if you stuff
the bird please make sure to allow extra cooking
time.
The British turkey information service says that
if the turkey is over 4kg/9Ib calculate 20mins per
kg plus 90mins. Therefore a 10Ib/4.540kg turkey
should take 3 hours at 180 C
o

Under 4kg/9Ib is 20mins per kg plus 70mins.

A meat thermometer is a great tool to ensure a

perfect turkey every time. You need to aim for a
core temperature of 75 C.
o

Pop up turkey timers are great as they provide

reassurance that the bird is properly cooked. The
timer is pushed into the deepest part of the breast
meat and will pop up at exactly 75 C which is the
correct temperature to be reached. You will need to
keep checking to see when this
occurs around the time its due
to be cooked. At this point,
the bird needs to be removed
from the oven to rest for
approximately 25mins. This
will help to redistribute the
juices prior to carving.
o

If you do not have either the

thermometer or timer, then
push a fork into the deepest
part of the leg. If the juices
run clear, then the turkey is
cooked. If not, give another
10mins and then try again.
To add more moisture to the breast, butter can be
rubbed into the breast meat under the skin and then
all over the legs. Season the bird and then cover the
breast with tin foil while leaving the legs to open
roast. The legs are not as tender as the breast meat
and therefore need more exposure to the heat so
that the legs and breast are cooked at the same time.
Otherwise the breast can become overcooked whilst
the legs need additional cooking time (the legs can
always be foiled later if necessary).
Note: The turkey is the main course; prepare all
of the other foods around the turkey, not the other
way around.
MERRY CHRISTMAS AND
A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR

Tis the Season

to be Jolly....

HRISTMAS is a time for merriment and fun. As the nights draw in we

thought you might appreciate a few good (or bad!) jokes ....

Two factory workers are talking. The woman

says, I can make the boss give me the day off. The
man replies, And how would you do that? The
woman says, Just wait and see. She then hangs
upside down from the ceiling. The boss comes in
and says, What are you doing? The woman replies,
Im a light bulb. The boss then says, Youve been
working so much that youve gone crazy. I think you
need to take the day off. The man starts to follow
her and the boss says, Where are you going? The
man replies, Im going home too. I cant work in the
dark.
A man walks into a chemists and says, Can
I have a bar of soap, please? The chemist says,
Do you want it scented? And the man says, No,
Ill take it with me now.
A group of chess enthusiasts were kicked out of a
hotel reception for discussing their winning games.
The manager said, I cant stand chess nuts boasting
in an open foyer.
Two cannibals were eating a clown one said
to the other, Does he taste funny to you?

Reaching the end of a job interview,

an interviewer asks a young graduate,
What starting salary are you looking for?
The young man replies, In the region of
50,000 a year, depending on the benefits
package. The interviewer enquires,
Well, what would you say to a package of
six weeks annual leave, full medical and
dental, company matching retirement
fund to 50% of salary, and a company
car leased every two years. The graduate
sits up straight and says, Wow! Are you
kidding? The interviewer replies, Yeah,
but you started it.
A husband and wife were lying in
bed unable to sleep as the dog next door
was barking. Ive had enough. Im
going to sort it out once and for all!
said the husband as he leapt out of bed
and went downstairs. A few minutes
later he came back into the bedroom
and got back into bed. The dog was
still barking outside. What did you
do? asked the wife. Ive put it in our
garden. Lets see how they like it!

LASER TREATMEN

Skincare advice with Jane Bryant,

WINTER is the perfect time for
Laser and Intense Pulsed Light
treatments.
Treat unwanted hair on the face and body,
thread veins on the face and upper chest or
sun damage to the face, hands, arms and
decollate.
Lighter skin is ideal for faster and more
effective results as the treatment involves
the the laser or IPL light being attracted to
the pigment or colour of the hair, vein or sun
damage. If the skin is darker treatment can
still be performed but the machine is set at a
lower setting and results will be completed
over a longer period of time.

Although it is still advisable to use a factor 30

during the winter months whilst undergoing
laser treatment, it is not as critical as in the
summer months.
The Ellipse IPL system is a world leader.
Hough Green Clinic has been treating
hundreds of clients over the past 10 years and
we happily can confirm that laser hair removal
by Ellipse is permanent on the limbs and bikini
line.
The treatment to the face is permanent
at the time of treatment as no hairs will
grow again in the treated follicles. However,
hormone levels change over our lifetime and
sometimes new follicles with new hairs will
form on the face and/or neck. A top up of

QUEENS PARK H

Stage is set for next big show

THE school production for 2016 will be Little Shop of Horrors. Over a course of
three Wednesdays throughout September, over 100 students attended a series
of drama and music workshops linked to the show and then went for formal
auditions. After some serious head scratching and deliberation, the cast was
formed but as always, anyone who auditioned is automatically in the show in
one way or another. The backstage crew have also started to work on preparing
for the staging of this epic show, meeting each Thursday after school. There is
a full complement of crew members including a stage manager, deputy stage
managers, assistant stage managers and other key roles for the behind the
scenes work. Tickets for the production will be released in early December.
BBC news
Recruitment is already underway for the BBC School Report team ready
for News Day in March with Year 13 Media Studies students taking
lead roles. This is an opportunity for those students who enjoy writing,
broadcasting and photography and those who hope to have a career in
the media to expand their skills and have some fun. It works by giving
students a chance to look around the Salford studios and do mock
interviews.

2015-16. Over 30 students from Years 10 and 12 attended an
audition workshop and 14 were selected to be in the chosen
play, Bassett which will be performed in March in Handbridge.
As part of the project, the National
Theatre will send one of their directors
to critically appraise the production
before it transfers to Manchesters new
theatre, Home in April. Mr Yeoman
attended a weekend workshop and
worked closely with the playwright to
look at staging options and explore the
intentions the playwright had when he
wrote this gripping, contemporary piece
of drama.

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH

EARLY
WINTER
THE year end is approaching and it is time to enjoy
the small splashes of colour in the garden. Frost is so
pretty on the most ordinary of foliage so enjoy the
frosting on the humble blackberry leaf (see photo) or
the large flat dying heads of Sedum or Hydrangea.
I know I have mentioned this before but one of my
favourite shrubs Viburnum bodnantense Dawn,
started flowering in October and is heavy with scent
in milder periods throughout winter. Plant it near a
regular thoroughfare so you can catch the honeyed
scent daily.

evergreen large spiky leaves and long stems covered

with tiny yellow scented flowers. Mahonias are great
for striking winter colour and if they get too tall, cut
stems down in early spring and they will re-sprout
new shoots for next winter.

For colour the evergreens take the stage in

winter. Some conifers have architectural shapes
provided they are given space to grow naturally.
Chamaecyparis pisifera Filifera Aurea is a bit of
a mouthful of a name but it will grow as a broad
pyramid shape with drooping golden foliage all
year and can be clipped to keep it compact. Partner
it with the rich deep green leaves and red berries
of mounded Skimmia and some glaucous blue
Euphorbia characias wulfenii.

Make sure plants in pots are protected from frost

by making sure the pots are not waterlogged as they
are more likely to freeze and crack in cold weather.
Take a plastic bag larger than the pot, cut the bottom
off to allow drainage and then stuff with straw to the
top of the pot. Move lemon or orange trees in pots to
greenhouse or cool conservatory and do the same
for pelargoniums. Last year I kept mine dry in pots in
the garage by a window and they came through to
grow on this year.

Jobs to do in the garden include pruning grapevines

when the plant is fully dormant in winter. They
produce sap when stems are cut and can have
disease introduced to the cut when the plant is
growing. Pruning in winter when the sap will not
bleed prevents this from happening.

Other plants that may be in flower include

Mahonia media, the varieties Charity or Winter
Sun are often seen for sale. This is a tall shrub with

Eaton Hall nurse identified from

First World War picture
THE identity of a First
World War Chester nurse
named Self in a historic
photo album has now been
revealed.
Archivists were seeking
the identity of a First World
War nurse who compiled a
moving pictorial record of
the days when the 2nd Duke
of Westminsters palatial
mansion served as a hospital
for wounded troops.
The album of 300-plus
photographs depicting
nurses and their patients amid the huge Gothic
splendour of Eatons Waterhouse Hall, was
acquired by archivists from a Chester book
shop in 1979. Several of the pictures in the
album, dating from 1914-17, show their creator
in her nursing uniform, although they are
captioned simply with the word Self.
An appeal was launched last year but
produced no response until now. Thanks to
detective work by Professor Alison Fell of the
University of Leeds and Chester archivist Liz
Green, the mystery may have been solved.
Self is now thought to be Mrs Caroline
Allwood (nee Haworth), who lived at Gorstella,
Dodleston from 1914.
After studying the album Professor Fell and
Liz Green came to the conclusion that the
unknown nurse was local because of the
informal nature and content of some of the
pictures.
Caroline Allwood was a ward sister at Eaton
and later Oakfield from November 1914.
She had a sister Nellie Haworth who was a
nurse in London in 1911, when Caroline herself
was living at Church House, Churton with
her husband John, a farmer, and their son
Frederick aged two.
There was nothing in the album to connect

Caroline Allwood with Self

apart from a picture of a
woman in a nurses uniform
labelled simply Nell thought
to be her sister Nellie
Haworth.
However Liz remembered
among some loose pictures,
one showing a house with a
woman and child standing
near the railings at the front.
The words Churton House
Fred & Self were on the
back of the photograph in
her familiar handwriting.
When the photograph was enlarged the
figures of Caroline Allwood and her smiling
son Frederick Insull Allwood emerged from the
grainy picture solving a mystery dating back
almost 40 years.
The full album of pictures is available for
public viewing at Cheshire Record Office on
Duke Street in Chester.
Above: Caroline Allwood simply captioned as
Self (1915)
Below: Caroline Allwood and her son Fredrick,
captioned as Fred & Self at Church House.

Winter Watch Parade

THE Chester Winter Watch Parade takes place
at 7pm on Thursday 10th December, starting
at the Forum and travelling down Werburgh
Street, Eastgate Street and Bridge Street.
There are performances including dance, fire
breathing and sword fights in Eastgate Street
and in the Market Square.
Dating from the 15th century, local artists and
community groups join together to celebrate
the time when the city leaders would hand over
the keys to the city watch.
Visit: www.midsummerwatch.co.uk
On the following Thursday, 17th December, at
7pm, it is the Saturnalia Parade starting from
Eastgate Street. Chester is back under Roman
control for the night as the Roman legion lights
up the streets with a torch-lit parade. This
traditional Roman event celebrates the feast
of Saturn. It was a time of celebration, visits to
friends, and gift-giving. It was also traditional
for masters and slaves to swap places, making
Saturnalia very popular. Free event.

Handbridge break-ins
I have noted a slight increase in theft
incidents around the Handbridge area. Please
look out for anything suspicious and report
it in to the Police on 101, so we can check it
out. Make sure that you remove valuable
from your gardens and vehicles and lock
them away in a safe location. Also make
sure that you lock car doors as a lot of thefts
from motor vehicles are opportunistic and

can be avoided. I would also advise that you

ensure your house doors are locked at all
times and that you have a working alarm that
you set when you leave the property. Having
adequate security measures in place can
minimize the chance of you personally been
effected by crime.

To target anti-social behaviour across the
area, especially in the run up to Halloween.
There are a number of areas where
officers will proactively target to challenge
inappropriate behaviour.
We did
From the last week of October until the 8th
November there has been a double crewed
Police patrol checking all the areas where
anti social behaviour issues are likely to occur
in Chester. During the October half term
youth activities have been held to give youths
things to do. Other than a couple of minor
Halloween incidents the Halloween bonfire
period has passed off with few issues around
Overleigh.

You Said
A regular issue raised by the public is that
of speeding vehicles Officers will, over the
coming weeks, be visible using a variety of
methods to combat such offences.
We did
During October PCSO Fox has carried out
two sessions on Lache Lane monitoring the
speed of vehicles. Six vehicles were found
going at inappropriate speeds and Police
Warning letters have been sent out to the
Keepers of these vehicles. We will be looking
at further traffic offences in the near future.
