SHOP TILL YOU DROP!
Attitudes (0) .shopping have changed dramatically over the last decade or so. There was a time
when shopping was a means to an end, not an occupation in its own right. Some people argue that we have
become a society of big-time (1) . , and that nothing but spending money makes us happy. On
the other (2) . , anyone who has worked hard to (3) .money surely has the right to
spend it (4) . whatever they wish. Provided that we are prepared to (5) . enough of
our money for a rainy day, there seems little wrong with using the rest to (6) .for things that
give us pleasure. For some people, however, spending money has become a serious business. It will take
more than a few hours (7) .to persuade them that they should not do this. The delights of

shopping are all too obvious. Attractive displays of food on supermarket (8) ., and clothes which
look fantastic on shop window models, tempt (9) . to part with their money, even if they do not
actually need the (10) they are buying. The real question is: would we all be happier if we were
(11) .? The answer is probably that we can be just as happy with money as we can without it.
However, now that many companies are branching out (12) . the teenage market, and selling to
teenagers has (13) . into a huge industry, we need to be aware of the kind of pressures being
(14) . on parents and children alike. Perhaps what we should do is make an effort to return to the
things that really matter in life and (15). what we have worked so hard to obtain with others less
fortunate than ourselves.

Task three: OPEN CLOZE

For questions 115, read the text below and think of the word which best fits each space. Use only one
word in each space.
SPONSORED WALK
been
Have you ever (0)
on a sponsored walk? I went on (1) .when I was about eleven years old.
Our teacher came up (2) .the idea. We would donate any money we raised to a local charity and
have a day out at the same time. I didnt really understand what (3) .involved in a sponsored
walk, but that didnt make (4) .difference to me. It just seemed an exciting thing to do, and we
set (5) .on our journey with enthusiasm. But the walk turned out to be even (6) .
exciting than I had expected. (7) . I didnt realise was that it consisted of walking two miles to a
small island (8) . only means of access was across a causeway. The island, (9) ..is
situated off the north-east coast of Britain, is a place of outstanding natural beauty, but very remote. The first
problem we came up (10) .was the sand. We had to put (11) .with it blowing in our
faces and on our legs as we struggled across the causeway. Added to that, we knew that (12) .
we did not return to the mainland in time, we would be cut (13) .by the incoming tide, and
would have to spend the night there! Well, we made it, and even managed to have a picnic there before it
was time to make our way back. You can imagine our relief when we arrived on the mainland exhausted, but
home (14) . dry. I must admit that I havent done a sponsored walk (15). I
went to the island. But who knows? One day I might do one again.
The End.
