Going public this week!!

This week marks a very important moment in SMRs potential development project: we go public! After
a decade of research and surveys, two years after the adoption of our new Vision Statement, seven
months after a key vote passed unanimously by the PCC, and three months of working alongside
Malcolm Reading Consultants (MRC), the architectural competition will be launched this week. Avid
readers of the Official Journal of the European Union will find an advert in a forthcoming edition, but the
main event will happen on 26th November when the competition website goes live and an email is sent
out to over three thousand architectural firms across Europe. We are also telling local press and media
and hope (even expect) that there will be some interest in this exciting phase of our project.
Yours sincerely

Dan Tyndall, Vicar

phase one
We are now entering phase one of the
churchs development project.
Phase one is designed to put the church
in a position to make a strong bid for
funding from the Heritage Lottery (HLF)
in November 2016.
It consists of the following elements:
- Architecture competition to inform the
built aspects of the overall project
- Heritage activity planning, to find ways
of bringing more people into contact
with the churchs rich history
- Feasibility study into community need
to inform the community-facing aspects
of the project
- Business planning to develop income
streams helping ensure that the church
remains financially sustainable

DIGITAL NEWSLETTER
We have recently created a digital newsletter which will
distributed via email twice each month. The newsletter will
contain updates on the development project, photos and
media links, information on the architecture competition
and details of events which will be part of the process
(more details below). We will be emailing the newsletter
to all staff, members of the Vestry, the PCC and church
members for whom we hold email addresses. If you do
not have access to email but would like to receive the
newsletter, we can send a paper copy.
If you do not want to receive the newsletter via email or
would like us to post a paper copy, please contact the
parish office.

FUNDING FOR PHASE ONE

The overall cost of phase one is 142,496. Funds to enable the
church to carry out this work was raised over the summer from
four sources:
- The PCC
- The Vestry
- The Canynges Society
- Temple Eccesiastical Charity
St Mary Redcliffe is extremely fortunate to be associated with
a number of charitable organisations which support the work of
the church. We are extremely grateful to the organisations listed
above who , through their generosity, have made the project
possible.

WHO ARE MRC?

Symposium

St Mary Redcliffe has employed Malcolm

Reading Consultants (MRC) to organise the
architecture competition on its behalf

On Tuesday 23rd February, St Mary Redcliffe will

host a Symposium on innovative uses for church
buildings and the future of church architecture.

MRC is an expert consultancy specialising

in achieving outstanding design for clients
who are commissioning new buildings or
refurbishing and conserving existing ones.
MRC believe in the power of design to create
new perceptions and act as an inspiration.

The event - which will be ticketed and open to the

public - is intended to provide food for thought to
the various teams of architects which reach the
shortlist stage of the competition.

They are the leading independent organiser

of design competitions based in the UK and
have over eighteen years experience running
international open design competitions, as
well as private invited competitions.
Their international portfolio includes those
for Queen Elizabeth Olympic Parks Culture
& Education Quarter, Mumbai City Museum,
Guggenheim Helsinki, Glasgow School of
Art and the Library of Foreign Literature in
Moscow. MRCs competitions have brought
emerging designers to world attention
over the past decade, including Thomas
Heatherwick, Amanda Levete and Steven
Holl.
The competition website address can be
found at the top of this newsletter.

agreed to become members of the competition
Jury Panel.

Four speakers with expertise in areas relevant to

the churchs project will speak for 40 minutes each

questions from the audience.
We are lucky to have secured Bishop Nick Holtam
- who oversaw the project at St Martin in the Fields

expert on the North Porch; and Loyd Grossman
who is now the Chairman of the Churches
Conservation Trust.

Project Board
Until now the churchs Quintet group has met
monthly and advised the PCC on various aspects
of the development project. This group was made
up of representatives from the PCC and Vestry, the
Vicar, churchwardens, the church architect and
three advisors with professional experience in
relevant areas.
As the project has now reached a more advanced
stage, a different management structure has been
adopted. The Quintet has been disbanded and a
Project Board, which will oversee the current phase
of work, has bee formed.
This board retains many of the personnel of the
Quintet group, but is expanded to include new
members whose significant knowledge and
expertise which will prove invaluable to the project.
We are delighted to announce that Mike Bothamley
- former High Sheriff of Bristol - has agreed to chair
the Project Board.
He is joined by Archdeacon Christine Froude of
the Diocese of Bristol, Andy Street, Director at SLR
Consulting and Rev David Alderman, recently
appointed Superintendant Minister of the Bristol
and South Gloucestershire Methodist Circuit.
We are greatful for their commitment to the project.
