Student Website Creators and Reviewers Training Module

Overview
Gaming and Technology Club students and a select group of Science and
Technology Academy students can each create one website with a total of 5
web pages. Students can add content (text, images, YouTube videos, Adobe
Flash elements, documents, etc.) to their website as long as they have
created each piece of content. Content from the Internet is not
permitted!
All content on any student-created website must be:
school-appropriate, which means students, parents and teachers of all
ages and backgrounds can view the content and not be offended
free from violence or violent actions, weapons, adult content such as
sexual content, or drug references or paraphernalia
originally created by each student, including all text, images, videos,
blog comments, etc.
violates copyright laws (images taken directly from the Internet that do
not have fair use or public domain exceptions)
Warning and Consequences for Violating Website Content Guidelines
A warning and consequence system will be shared with students and
implemented in the event a student posts unacceptable content and/or if
they do not remove or replace the content. Student websites have two
restriction options:
o The disable editing option means students will no longer be
able to change, add/or remove any content on their site.
o The delete site option means the student website will be
deleted.
Student Website Creator Training
Role Explanation

Students who serve as website creators are expected to build and add
content to websites for themselves or their respective group following the
guidelines outlined by their club or academy teacher. Student creators will
add, edit and create all content added to Specialty Academy program
websites. The two primary concerns for student creators are to never add
content that:

violates copyright laws (images taken directly from the Internet

that do not have fair use or public domain exceptions)
is not school-appropriate and acceptable for viewing by all ages;

content that portrays violence or violent actions, weapons, adult

themes such as sexual content, and drug references or
paraphernalia

Editing Tools

Student website creators will be given access to a private Message Board,

called Student Experience Team Websites Administration. Website
creators should contact their Clubs and Activities or Specialty Academy
program teacher if they cannot read or access the private Message Board
topics and threads.

Website Creation Important Notes

For the Gaming and Technology Club students, creating a Blog Page will be
permitted since all blog comments are moderated through the teacher
account before those comments are publically available.
Students have the option to add a page type called External Link and they
can add a page to any website address (YouTube or Facebook, for example).
Students are not permitted to add this type of page. Students will be
warned and could lose website creation privileges if they link to any external
websites they themselves did not create No Exceptions!
Student Website Reviewer Training
Role Explanation

Student reviewers will review the student-created websites, including text,

images, video, and any other multimedia elements. Student reviewers will be
asked to report on any content that:

violates copyright laws (images taken directly from the Internet

that do not have fair use or public domain exceptions)
is not school-appropriate and acceptable viewing by all ages;

content that portrays violence or violent actions, weapons, adult

themes such as sexual content, or drug references or
paraphernalia
Student reviewers will use their best judgment, according to examples
provided in the training module. In extreme cases of a violation of this policy,
student reviewers must send their club or academy coordinator a WebMail
message immediately with student name, website URL and nature of the
content that needs to be removed immediately.

Student Reviewer Tasks and Resources

Student website reviewers will be given access to a private Message Board,
called Student Experience Team Websites Administration. Student
reviewers should contact the Clubs and Activities or Specialty Academy
program teacher if they cannot read or access the private Message Board
topics and threads.
A schedule and content report spreadsheet will be posted on the Message
Board for website reviewers so they can choose a day and time in which they
will review student-created websites.

Clubs and Activities and Specialty Academy program staff members will post
a list of student website addresses to be reviewed each week. Student
reviewers will select one day each week to review student-created websites
from the posted list.
Student reviewers that are not scheduled to review websites can post
messages on the Student Experience Team Websites Administration Message
Board to alert other student reviewers and teachers if a student repeatedly
posts inappropriate content on their website.

Student reviewers should review topics and threads with content samples,
including reviewer tasks, options, and resources for use in reviewing student
websites content.
If and when reviewers find inappropriate content, they must document the
student creators name and their website address along with a comment
about what content is inappropriate on the content report chart. Clubs and
Activities and Specialty Academy program staff members will review the
comments throughout the week and send a WebMail message to the student
creator requesting that the inappropriate content be removed.
If the inappropriate content is not replaced or removed within 24 hours, the
students website will be disabled, meaning the student creator will lose the
privilege of editing their site. In extreme cases, the student website will be
deleted and the student and their Caretaker will be notified by WebMail
message and phone by the Clubs and Activities and Specialty Academy
program staff members.
