1. (a) A single-phase thyristor-controlled bridge rectifier is supplying a resistive load. The
sinusoidal supply voltage is, Vmax sin(t) at 50 Hz and the firing angle is , neglecting the
effect of overlap. Derive the mean DC output voltage formula.
(b) Assume the rms value of supply voltage is 615 V(rms), and the load resistance is 200
., calculate the mean DC output voltage and current when the delay angle = 60. [415

(c) For the above rectifier if the load is highly inductive to maintain a constant dc current
and firing angle unchanged, sketch the dc-bus voltage and ac-side current. Derive the
formula for the mean DC output voltage and calculate the average DC output voltage
and current [276 V, 1.38A].
(d) If in (c) above the average DC output voltage is 320 V, what is firing angle ? [54.69]
2. (a) A full-wave diode-bridge rectifier has a capacitor filter C connected across its output
terminals and the load resistance is R. The frequency of the input voltage is 50 Hz, and the
rectified output dc voltage VDC has ripples approximating to a saw-tooth waveform with
frequency fr and peak-to-peak value Vpp. Given that the rms value of the ripple voltage is V pp /
(23), derive the formula for percentage ripple of the output voltage.
(b) if R= 50 calculate the value of capacitor C required for the percentage ripple to be
below 5%. [1.154mF]
3. A full-bridge diode rectifier is operated from a 60 Hz 120V (rms) power supply. On the dcside it has a 100uF filter capacitor and supplies a 1000 load. What is the percentage ripple?
What is DC voltage and average current in load? [2.4%, 163V, 163mA]

formula, and calculate the rms values of voltage and current. Calculate the real power and
power factor. (7.07V, 3.54A, 25W, 1)
(b) If the same voltage is supplying an inductive load and the current waveform has the same
magnitude as 4.(a) above but phase delayed voltage by 30 , write the current formula again ,
Calculate the real power and reactive power Q and power factor for this case.
(21.65W,12.5VA, 0.866)
(c) A single-phase full-wave controlled rectifier supplied by the AC voltage V SM sin(t) has a
square wave input current with amplitude IS. The input fundamental current component
magnitude is IS1 and the phase delay angle 1 is equal to the device firing angle . Based on
the AC side,
