1. (a) A single-phase thyristor-controlled bridge rectifier is supplying a resistive load. The
sinusoidal supply voltage is, Vmax sin(t) at 50 Hz and the firing angle is , neglecting the
effect of overlap. Derive the mean DC output voltage formula.
(b) Assume the rms value of supply voltage is 615 V(rms), and the load resistance is 200
., calculate the mean DC output voltage and current when the delay angle = 60. [415
V, 2.075 A]
(c) For the above rectifier if the load is highly inductive to maintain a constant dc current
and firing angle unchanged, sketch the dc-bus voltage and ac-side current. Derive the
formula for the mean DC output voltage and calculate the average DC output voltage
and current [276 V, 1.38A].
(d) If in (c) above the average DC output voltage is 320 V, what is firing angle ? [54.69]
2. (a) A full-wave diode-bridge rectifier has a capacitor filter C connected across its output
terminals and the load resistance is R. The frequency of the input voltage is 50 Hz, and the
rectified output dc voltage VDC has ripples approximating to a saw-tooth waveform with
frequency fr and peak-to-peak value Vpp. Given that the rms value of the ripple voltage is V pp /
(23), derive the formula for percentage ripple of the output voltage.
(b) if R= 50 calculate the value of capacitor C required for the percentage ripple to be
below 5%. [1.154mF]
3. A full-bridge diode rectifier is operated from a 60 Hz 120V (rms) power supply. On the dcside it has a 100uF filter capacitor and supplies a 1000 load. What is the percentage ripple?

5. A single-phase full-bridge rectifier in (b)(i) is supplied from a 240 V(rms), 50 Hz power


system with supply inductance, LS = 4 mH. The load voltage is 180 V and the load power is
2800 W. Calculate the voltage loss due to overlap effect, and the device firing angle .

8 A permanent magnet excited dc motor is rated at 240 V, 1000 rpm and is supplied with
power from a fully controlled single-phase rectifier. The power supply is sinusoidal and rated
at 210 V(rms) 50 Hz. The motor armature resistance is 0.42 and motor constant is 2 volt
second/radian. A large inductance is included in the armature circuit to ensure ripple free dc
current. If thyristor firing angle = 20 degrees , the load torque is maintained constant, and
assuming that the speed is proportional to the average applied voltage, calculate the motor
current under rated condition, motor input voltage, (=converter average DC voltage ) , speed
