1.0 Procedure
1. Open ASPEN HYSYS 8.6 software.
2. New case was selected and the ethylene, hydrochloric acid, nitrogen and ethyl chloride
were assign as the fluid package.

3. The property package was open and Peng Robinson was chosen as the fluid package.
Simulation tab is clicked.

4. Drag the mixer, conversion reactor, component splitter, splitter and recycle from the
component palette to the case window.

5. Double click the mixer, labelled the inlet stream as 1 and the outlet stream of the mixer was
labelled as 2.

6. Click the worksheet tab and the component composition of the stream were inserted. The
composition for stream 1 were 48 mol % for ethylene, 50 mol % for hydrochloric acid, 2
mol % for nitrogen and 0% ethyl chloride.

7. Then, the condition tab is clicked. The temperature is at 25 oC and 1atm for both stream 1
and stream 2 is inserted as the manual stated to assumed there is no pressure drop. The inlet
molar flow of 100kmol/hr is inserted.

8. The conversion reactor icon is clicked. The inlet and the outlet stream is labelled as figure
below.

9. A reaction set was created and labelled as Set-1. Insert all the component in the reaction set
and the values of its stoichiometric coefficient. Ethylene was choose as the base component
and 90 % of conversion was set for the reaction set.

10. Then, the conversion set is attached on the conversion reactor reaction tab.

11. Double click the component splitter, stream 3 was set to flow to the inlet of the component
slitter. The overhead stream was labelled as stream 5 and bottom outlet was labelled as
stream 6 and the energy stream is labeled E2.

12. The parameters tab was clicked and the temperature for stream 5 and stream 6 were set to
be 25 oC. The pressure drop is 0 hence the pressure was maintained at 1 atm. Then, the split
value for each component were inserted.

13. Next, move to the next equipment, splitter. The stream was labelled as below. At stream 8,
the molar flow rate was 10 kmol/hr.

14. At the recycle, the stream 7 was inserted and recycled into stream 9 which is then sent to
the mixer to be mixed with the inlet stream.

15. Next, double click the mixer and add stream 9 to the inlet stream.

2.0 Process Flow Diagram (PFD)

Figure 2.1: Process Flow Diagram (PFD) for production of ethyl chloride

Based on figure 2.1, the process flow diagram illustrated the production of ethyl chloride. A
mixture of ethylene, HCl and nitrogen was fed to the mixer at 25C, 1 atm and 100 kmol/hr as
stream 1. The outlet stream, 2, was allowed to flow into the conversion reactor and the
component undergo conversion process. The outlet stream of the conversion reactor was set to
flow into a component splitter. The bottom product labelled 6 was pure ethyl chloride. The
overhead product labelled as 5 was sent to the splitter. The outlet stream of the splitter labelled 8,
10 kmol/hr was withdrawn while the stream labelled 7 was sent to the recycle component and
undergo recycling process. The final recycle product was stream 9. The stream was sent back
into the mixer.

3.0 Workbook/Stream Summary

Figure 3.1: Summary for composition and material stream for the process

Figure 3.1 shows the properties value for each from stream 1 to stream 7. From the table, it
shows the temperature and the pressure were same throughout the process. The outlet stream of
the component splitter labelled 6 shows the value of ethyl chloride of 1.0000 which means pure
ethyl chloride is present at stream 6. It conclude that the objective of the process is obtained.

4.0 Question and Discussion

1. What are the mole fractions for each component at the effluent of the reactor?

After the conversion process in the reactor, the composition for the effluent stream were
0.0812 for ethylene, 0.1347 for HCl, 0.7306 for ethyl chloride and 0.0535 for nitrogen at
stream 3 and 0.0031 for ethylene, 0.0085 for HCl, 0.9883 for ethyl chloride and 0.001 for
nitrogen at stream 4.
2. What is the flow rate of the recycle stream?

The stream 7 and 9 are the stream of the recyle. The molar flow rate of the stream was
6.587 kmol/hr while the mass flow rate was 212.4kg/hr.

3. What is the flow rate of the final product after recycling?

The molar flow rate of the final product after recycling is 6.547 kmol/hr and the mass
flow rate is 211.1 kg/hr
