Vostell / Higgins - Fantastic Architecture

Primary Information 2015 ISBN 9780990689607 Acqn 25686
Hb 15x21cm 192pp 150ills 21.95
Compiled by Fluxus artists Wolf Vostell and Dick Higgins, and first published by Higgins'
legendary Something Else Press in 1970, Fantastic Architecture anticipated the critiques
launched by a new generation of visionary architects in the 1970s. In his introduction, Higgins
argued that "architects have only just begun to escape from the drawing board mentality," and
articulated the need for "creating space, which may or may not be functional, but which is at least
relevant to the sensory environment in which we live. The economics of building has led to an
aridity in our experience which is not consistent with the richness of our time." Against this,
Higgins and Vostell advocate the approach of polymath artists such as Kurt Schwitters, Raoul
Hausmann, Erich Buchholz, John Cage and Buckminster Fuller. From their contemporaries and
friends, artists such as Carolee Schneemann, Ben Vautier, Richard Hamilton, Douglas Huebler,
Lawrence Weiner, Dennis Oppenheim, Jan Dibbets, Jean Tinguely, Robert Filliou, Daniel Spoerri,
Geoff and Bici Hendricks, Philip Corner, Joseph Beuys, Ay-o, Claes Oldenburg and others also
made contributions, which range from the visionary to the absurd to the political, from the
epistolary to the outright manifesto. Joseph Beuys submitted a recommendation to raise the
height of the Berlin Wall; Claes Oldenburg's proposals included a colossal replacement for the
Washington Obelisk and a monument for war heroes. Vostell and Higgins considered it the
artist's responsibility to research and revolutionize structures in space, recognizing that artists
could reconceive buildings without the bureaucracy of government and urban planning. The
missives and artworks made for this book show how much visionary architecture was intertwined
with all facets of culture and critique. Fantastic Architecture is a prime example of a 1960s Fluxus
artist's book and of imaginative cross-media thinking.

Jonas Lindvall - Architecture And Form

Though ostensibly the works of Jonas Lindvall may fit into the Nordic tradition, his rejection of any
particular style or trend sets him apart from his contemporaries. Unlike the wider Swedish design
scene which largely revolves around Stockholm, Lindvall chooses to continue his work from
Malm, his hometown, and spans the disciplines of architecture and furniture design. Among his
most iconic designs to date are his Oak and Papa chairs for Skandiform simple, beautiful
concepts with a nod to the Scandinavian modern style. In addition to design and residential
projects, Lindvall also takes on commercial architecture and interior design from offices to retail
schemes with memorable results. His interior design for the Japanese restaurant Izakaya Koi
won the Golden Chair Award in 2004. This monograph invites readers to explore his impressive
back catalogue and sneak a peek at projects in the pipeline.

Pb 21x27cm 224pp 150col ills 26.50
The infrastructure of a city forms a tangle of streets, tunnels, routes and lines. But infrastructure
can be much more than merely a functional necessity. 'Infratecture' represents the actual
integrated design and construction of infrastructure, with the aim of creating added sociological,
cultural, ecological and economic value, in addition to being a functional solution for traffic flows.
'Infratecture' shows how with the right mind set, genuine cooperation and sophisticated design,
infrastructure can form a significant part of our everyday environment. This is depicted from 15
different perspectives, featuring 30 examples of international best practices.

Allan Sekula - Facing The Music

East Of Borneo Books 2015 ISBN 9780692312445 Acqn 24601
Hb 27x26cm 204pp 150ills 75col 42.95
Allan Sekula (19512013), photographer, artist, filmmaker, scholar, teacher and activist, devoted
much of his life to the theory and practice of social documentary. This posthumous volume
presents a collaborative exploration he initiated to examine downtown Los Angeles as its
redevelopment peaked with the construction of Frank Gehry's cultural icon. Designed as an
exploration of the impact of Gehry's building, the book challenges civic complacency by engaging
a vital counter-tradition of social documentary investigation. Including a previously unpublished
essay by Sekula on the challenges of representing the city, an interview with him about the 2005
exhibition Facing the Music which he curated for the gallery at REDCAT, and an overview of the
building's history and the continuing urban transformations it has catalysed, this publication is a
unique record of social and artistic engagement in a metropolis often thought to inhibit such
efforts.

In order to avoid participation in architecture and urban design becoming merely a politically
required token of democratic involvement, architects, planners, and designers need to commit
themselves and relinquish control, claims Jeremy Till in this issues opening interview. With this
theme, the goal is to uncover and reassess to what extent individual citizens actually can and
should become proactive in the shaping and development of cities and neighbourhoods. With
contributions from Damon Rich, Serafina Amoroso, Marina Abramovi, Cathy Smith, Stefan
Gruber, and more, it touches upon everything from DIY urbanism to consumerism and microstrategies.

The centenary of Lina Bo Bardi, born in Rome in 1914, has rekindled the fervour for her life and
oeuvre. For many years, her role in 20th century architecture remained undervalued, but recent
recognition of her strong multicultural character and new interest in Brazil as an emerging
geopolitical powerhouse have combined to once more bring her work into the spotlight. Educated
in Italy, she moved to Brazil after World War II following a yearn to humanise architecture,
building for peoples everyday needs. This edition of the magazine closely examines her intense
professional activity and lasting legacy through four critical essays and profiles of 20 exemplary
projects.
