Engineering Students!
Would you like to be apart of an active and
exciting research group at the frontiers of
autonomous systems, aero and hydro
dynamics, robotics and biomimicry?
6 Funded Positions are available in Dr.

Electro-Active Polymer Actuators (EAPs): EAPs are flexible actuators that drive motion
by compressing an elastomer sheet between two flexible conductor plates attracted to each
other by capacitive forces. We plan to use EAPs for underwater robots. Students with a
background in material sciences, and specifically working with rubber and plastics, are
preferred.
Undergraduate level:
Bioinspired Underwater Vehicle Sensor Array - Inspired by fish and other marine
organisms, we aim to add a distributed sensor suite to an existing autonomous underwater
vehicle (AUV), to improve position tracking stability, and sense surrounding environmental
factors. Student will be required to design a module to fit on the existing AUV with
embedded pressure sensors, and fabricate the module when design is complete.
Experience with SolidWorks is required, and prior machine shop experience is preferred.
Squid Care and testing facility: Need a student to operate and maintain an existing
squid and testing facility. This student would take care of squid and other types of fish.
Experience in salt-water aquarium or a biology background would be desired.
Wind tunnel testing and design: We are designing a new gust generation mechanism
for a large scale wind tunnel (cross section of a room). This project is focused on designing
a gust generation mechanism for this new wind tunnel and its characterization. Requires
experience in fluid mechanics, turbulence, and mechanical design.
Molecular Dynamic Simulation: Molecular dynamic of complex phenomenon in fluids (eg.
two-phase flow, triple contact point, etc.)
Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV): PIV technique for understanding flow around flapping
wings, swimming fish, and small scale flows.
