Sizing and Comparing

Erin Goldsberry
Preschool- Mathematics

Common Core Standards:

Topic: Group and Categorize
Standard: Sort and classify objects by one or more attributes (e.g. size, shape)
Topic: Describe and Compare Measureable Attributes
Standard: Describe and compare objects using measureable attributes (e.g., length, size, capacity and
weight).
Standard: Order objects by measureable attribute (e.g., biggest to smallest, etc.).
Lesson Summary:
The purpose of this lesson plan is to get the children to understand the concepts of sizing objects by looking at
shapes, sizes. I will be teaching with the Eno Board which is a smart board. The children will be using an
App on the Ipad, an electronic smart table and hands on activity. Each week, the stations will stay the same,
but the difficulty will go up.
Estimated Duration:
This lesson plan will be done for an hour one day a week for a month. Every Tuesday we will go over
grouping and categorizing. We will discuss it, do the Math portion (sorting) then there will be an art that will
go along with the Math. All and all will take 1 hour every Tuesday, total of 4 hours the month of December.
Commentary: I plan on first have a circle time using the Eno Board to help show how to size, what sizing
means, ordering , what ordering means etc. Once circle time is done, I will discuss with the children that we
will first try the concept with using our own shoes. Then we will move to stations. One station will be the
Smart Table, next Ipad, then and cutting out and placing in order activity. This will all be done every Tuesday.
As the weeks go on, it will get tricker. What I feel will be a challenge with this lesson is being able to order
objects of any type. Will they understand the directions that the website gives as well as mine? I think what
will get them hooked is by they Ipads, children love using Ipads and if it is added into the learning the
children will be egger to learn and see what is next. I feel strongly that they will have the concept down by
then end of the month.
Instructional Procedures:
Week 1: Circle time:15-20 minutes- the concept of size ordering and comparing objects will be introduced.
First, I will discuss what it means to size order. Then I will pull objects up on the Eno Board and have them
tell me what makes these shapes different, which one is smaller, bigger, etc. Once done discussing the students
will then be on their own.
Next: 40-45 minutes will be stations. Each child is expected to do each station. The first station will be the
Ipads, there is an application on there that have size ordering, teach how to compare items. The application

on the Ipad is called ABC Mouse; teacher will be monitoring to make sure they got to where they should be.
Second station is our Smart Table it is a big touch screen that allows children to learn a different way. I will
choose the game they are playing. They will be filling in the blank spot. For example small football, blank
space, large football. What goes in the blank spot? Third station is a picture print outs that they will cut out
and size order as best as they can. I am reaching for smallest to largest, so this will be a goal.
Week 2: Circle time:15-20 minutes- the concept of size ordering and comparing objects will be talked about
like last week. First, I will see what it is that they remember from last week and what it is I am looking for. If
concept not understood yet discuss what it means to size order. Then I will pull objects up on the Eno Board
and have the children come up and try and do it themselves. Figure out which one is smaller, bigger, etc. Once
done discussing the students will then be on their own.
Next: 40-45 minutes will be stations. Each child is expected to do each station. The first station will be the
Ipads, they will be using the same application. The application on the Ipad is called ABC Mouse; teacher will
be monitoring to make sure they got to where they should be. This application advances in the subject they are
doing as they pass each one. So the sorting, comparing, sizing will get harder as we go. Second station is our
Smart Table it is a big touch screen that allows children to learn a different way. It will be the same as the first
week until I feel they are ready for something more difficult. Third station is will be different size animals set
out. The children are encouraged to compare, and size order them.
Week 3: Circle time:15-20 minutes- the concept of size ordering and comparing objects will be talked about
like last week. This week, I am going to ask each child individual an example of either sizing ordering or
comparing. For the children that are able to give me an example without hesitation, I will have them do
something a little different for station 3. For the children who are hesitating, we will keep it basic. I will once
again pull objects up on the Eno Board and have the children come up and try and do it themselves. Figure out
which one is smaller, bigger, etc. Once done discussing the students will then be on their own.
Next: 40-45 minutes will be stations. Each child is expected to do each station. The first station will be the
Ipads, they will be using the same application. The application on the Ipad is called ABC Mouse, for those
who do not need monitored they will be on their own, for those who still need the extra assistance, a teacher
will be there. Remember, the sorting, comparing, sizing will get harder as we go. Second station is our Smart
Table it is a big touch screen that allows children to learn a different way. This week, they will create their
own size ordering or comparing that they would like. Third station they will be encouraged to sort the items
all by size, then they will be asked to size order them. This time I will be more focused on this station to see
which children are thriving and which I need to take a step back with. The children are encouraged to compare,
and size order them.
Week 4: Circle time:15-20 minutes- the concept of size ordering and comparing objects will be talked about
like last week. This week, it will all be review. We will do a brief discussion about how this is the last day for
this math concept and that after today, we will be moving on. Each child should have a grasp on the concept
so I will keep it short unless they have questions. Once done discussing the students will then be on their own.
Next: 40-45 minutes will be stations. Each child is expected to do each station. The first station will be the
Ipads; they will be using the same application. They will still be using ABC Mouse on the Ipad; all children
will be doing this on their own. That way I can get on the account and see where they are with the concept and
it they grasped it. Second station is our Smart Table, since this is our final review week, it will all be assorted,
from, sizing, ordering and comparing. Third station they will be encouraged to cut out shapes of their own
and glue them to a sentence strip in an order they choose. I will ask the children to explain what it is they did
and I will write it on the back. I will then put it in their portfolio.

Pre-Assessment:
When I bring up the new concept our first week, I will be asking what they think sizing, ordering and
comparing means. Once I hear their answered I can see who may know and who may not know. Also, when
walking around the room while they are doing their stations, I will glance over their shoulders to see what it is
they are doing or if they understand. I will start a word document with each childs name and write notes to
each name after I have observed what it is they are doing.
Scoring Guidelines:
My scoring guideline for my pre-assessment will be me going around and implementing notes into a
word document that I can go back to at the end of our four weeks and see how far we have come.
Post-Assessment:
After the four weeks, I will be taking their final art project from station three and putting it in their portfolio.
I will aslo be adding in new observations to the work document I created for each child.
Scoring Guidelines:
The scoring for the assessment at the end will be seeing how they did on their final project. I will at the
final observation to their name in a word document.

Differentiated Instructional Support

Describe how instruction can be differentiated (changed or altered) to meet the needs of gifted or accelerated
students: Ways that individual needs could be met, is one on one if needed, we can enable the speaking aspect
so they can hear what it is they are doing. For example, we could have an extra teacher that can come in and
sit one on one or we can have the teacher take the child to a separate room so it is not as distracting. For those
who are visually impaired we are able to sure the speaking option on for the App so they can hear what it is
they are doing.

Extension
http://www.crickweb.co.uk/assets/activities/compare-order7.swf
This Website allows children to continue working on sizing and ordering. This can make learning fun for the
children. Make sure the volume is up on your computer. The website will give them instructions as to what
they are to be looking for.

Homework Options and Home Connections

Since we are only in Preschool, there will not be homework. However, I do recommend that the children
continue to do these concepts at home. There is a great website children can go to or you can get ABC Mouse
on your computer or Ipad at home. It is a fun and great way to interact with your child.

Interdisciplinary Connections
Compare two-dimensional shapes, in different sizes and orientations, using informal language would be a great
one to go into after. You will still be comparing but analyzing a little more than before.
Measure length and volume (capacity) using non-standard or standard measurement tools. This could be a
great extension to the concepts we learned. They can measure each object with a ruler and based off the
number on the ruler larger or smaller they will be able to place it where it should go.
